DeeI shifted the bags on my shoulder, fumbling to press the elevator button. The doors opened, and I stepped in, groaning in frustration when I realized I had pressed down instead of up. Resigned, I let the doors close, knowing I would have to wait for the elevator to return to the main floor anyway.I stepped to the back, lowering my heavy bags. Between the groceries and my bulging messenger bag, they were a lot to handle. The doors opened, and another passenger stepped in as I rummaged for my keys. I glanced up to ask the person to press my floor and froze. Maddox was in front of me, his back turned my way. His shoulders were stooped and his hair in disarray. Was he ignoring me? I hadn’t seen him since Sunday, and it bothered me more than I wanted to admit. He had told me the office was crazy busy, and on top of that, he wasn’t feeling well, but it felt more like an excuse than the truth.I cleared my throat. “Maddox.”He turned his head, and I gasped when his face came into view.

Long moments passed, and I wondered if he had fallen asleep. I didn’t want to stop or move and disturb him. The intense satisfaction of knowing I was helping him in some way surprised me. Until that moment, I hadn’t realized how much I had missed him. His smiles and laughter. His warm voice and bossy attitude. I had been restless and upset, worried and annoyed over his absence, but all of it vanished when he was near. I desperately wanted to know what made him look that way, but I knew he wouldn’t tell me until he was ready. I hoped he was confiding in Bentley or Aiden, because whatever he was carrying was too heavy to cope with on his own.An unexpected feeling hit my chest and I held my breath. I wanted to be that person for him. To share his troubles and ease them the way I was doing right now. I had never wanted to be that person for anyone except my sister, and the feeling was different.I cared about Maddox. More than I should. But it was there, and although I wasn’t sure what t

MaddoxI WANDERED AROUND my condo, restless and uptight. The silence in the room was too loud, yet the stress inside me screamed.Everything had been going too well. I should have known it. From the moment I saw Jill, heard her grating voice, I had felt the impending doom, and there seemed to be no way out.Except, I had found one.I could tell Jill what she wanted to hear to lull her into a false sense of security. At the same time, I would dissolve my partnership with BAM, leave the city, and let Bentley and Aiden carry on without me. The pictures would do her no good if she had nothing to take away from me. She would have already taken everything I held dear. I had enough money; I never had to worry about it, but I would lose the family I had created. The only real family I had ever known.I would be forced to walk away from the only woman I’d ever loved. Would ever love. My chest ached at the thought of leaving her. Or never seeing her smile or hearing her voice. Being with her in

“No. I’ve been giving the entire fucked-up situation a lot of thought.”“What about your pretty lady? Dee? What does she think you should do?”I lifted my glass, taking a long swallow. “I haven’t told her, either.”Richard’s brow furrowed, and he sipped his scotch.“You know, often decisions made on your own are the worst ones of all. We can never look at the problem objectively and tend to see only one side.”I snorted into my glass. “There is only one side to this mess.”“I doubt that.”“No one else can make this decision.”“Agreed. I know I don’t know you that well, Maddox, and Bentley and Aiden even less. But I see the strength of your friendship. The respect you have for each other. I think they’d want the chance to have their thoughts on your decision heard. In fact, I’m certain they would insist.”“I can’t allow Bentley to risk the reputation of his company.”“Don’t you think he should have a say in the matter?”I sighed, unsure how to respond. “I can’t put him in the position

I tried not to laugh. “It’s not funny.”“Not right now. But it will be one day. At least I hope so, for your sake.” He leaned forward, resting his arms on his thighs, earnest. “I think there’s another solution. Meet with Aiden and Bentley. Trust them and be honest. Give them the options. I think not only will they be on your side, they’ll help you fight.” He grinned. “You have your resident genius, plus the giant on your side. Don’t discount the power of a very influential boss. I can only imagine what ammunition they will come up with to help. This woman is betting you’ll hand her the money quietly. If you fight back, she might back down. I’m not a lawyer, but she took the pictures without your consent and is now trying to use them to blackmail you. And she was a willing participant. That doesn’t look so good on her either.”That gave me pause. He grinned. “Let her do her worst. Call her bluff.” He shook my shoulder. “Talk to your friends, Maddox. Let them help. Don’t try to handle i

Bentley read it and scowled, lifting his eyes to meet mine, then handed the letter to Aiden. He read it slowly, his brow furrowed as he made his way through the short document.“Explain this, Maddox,” Bentley demanded.I leaned forward. “She wants a house and money—a yearly payout. If I don’t give it to her, she is going to put these pictures out there. To the media, on social sites, everywhere. Once they’re out there, that’s it. BAM will forever be associated with them. The scandal will be huge. You don’t want that stain on your company, Bent.”“Our company,” he said.I continued as if he hadn’t spoken. “If I pay her, shut her up for now, and leave, if it ever comes out, you can distance yourself. Spin it so you can keep your reputation clean and not affect the company. Say you fired me the second this came to your attention. Whatever you need to do.”“And what do you plan on doing? Where will you work?”I barked out a laugh. “I don’t need to work. You know that.” I huffed out a long

“So glad I could be of further use.”He ignored my sarcasm. “I have Reid coming in.”I groaned. “Is that necessary? I’m already embarrassed enough.”“It is.” He glanced at the photos again and shook his head. “Who knew you had that kinky shit in you, Mad Dog? You hide it so well under your cool attitude and hip suits. Do you carry a whip in your briefcase for when the mood strikes?”I rolled my eyes, knowing he was trying to lighten the mood. It was how we handled things when the atmosphere got tense. “Shut up or you’ll be the first to find out.”With a chuckle, he pushed the photos toward me. “Who else knows?”I tugged on my scruff. “Richard VanRyan.”His eyebrows shot up. “What?”“I ran into him. He could see I was upset, and we started talking. He shared something from his past, and without going into a lot of details, I told him what was happening. He’s the one who convinced me to call you and talk instead of walking away.”He stared at me, astonished, then his head fell back as h

“I met her in university. I thought she was beautiful and bright. She seemed to have it all. We were together for a short while.” I sighed and groaned. “It was the biggest mistake of my life.”“Why?”“She hid the real person she was under her charming persona. She had a way of getting me to do things I didn’t really want to do. She could manipulate me—something I didn’t allow anyone else to do.” I rubbed the back of my neck as memories pricked my brain, making me uncomfortable. “I was going through a bad time. Bent was setting up his business and hardly ever around. Aiden was writing finals of two majors. He was either at school or at the library. If he was at home, he was studying or sleeping. I was feeling lost and at a crossroads. For a short time, she made me feel better.”“What happened?”My shoulders felt tight and my neck ached. I rolled my arms, trying to release the tension. I sat beside her, reaching for her hand. Absently, I kissed her thumb, hating the fact that it was her

I nodded. “Another one of her signature moves.”Dee shook her head. “Crazy bitch.”I felt a smile tug on my lips. Dee rarely swore, and it seemed strange to hear curse words fall from her sweet lips. She stood, brushed off her pants, and met my gaze.“So these pictures, I assume they make it look worse than it is?”I rubbed my head. “It was awful regardless, and I’m ashamed of my actions, but yes.”“I want to see them.”“No,” I protested, horrified at the thought. “I don’t want you to see me that way.”“Give them to me, Maddox.”“No. This isn’t up for discussion.”“Either you give them to me, or I walk right now.”“Why? Why do you want to see them? Jesus, I don’t even want to look at them.”She tapped her foot. “My reasons are my own. Let me see them.”Cursing, I pushed off the floor and got the envelope from my office. Wordlessly, I handed it to her.She opened the flap and scanned through the pictures. Once, then twice. She shoved them back into the envelope before she spoke.“You h

Jill answered the door, overdressed and made up for a Monday morning. She looked exultant, sweeping her arm in a grand gesture. “I’ve been waiting.”I stepped in, hiding my distaste. The room was a disaster. Clothes strewn around, bed unmade, and last night’s dinner tray on the floor, an empty bottle of wine laying on its side.“You took your time. I thought I was going to have to come for another visit, Maddox.” She simpered. “You know I hate to be kept waiting.”“I don’t know anything about you anymore, Jill. I never really did. But as I told you, I’m a busy man. It takes time to make arrangements.”She grinned, her crimson lips stretched across her teeth at the word “arrangements.” A smear of lipstick stuck to her front teeth, as if she had bitten into something and it left behind blood. It was fitting.“You have a video.”Her eyebrows rose. “Someone is clever.”I tamped down my revulsion. “I want to see it.”“Why?”“Why not?” I countered. She regarded me, her arms crossed, red-tip
