CHAPTER 31
CHARLENE'S POV"Don't you dare change clothes." I glared fiercely at him. He raised an eyebrow at me, his lips curling into a smirk. "Now, that doesn't sound like a very nice thing to say. You know that I can't hear you." I huffed, turning back and facing the wall. "Then you must be deaf and mute! And stupid, because it sounds exactly like something you'd do. Now go back to changing, okay?" He laughed softly as he gently pressed his chest to mine, causing me to squeal loudly as I tried to push him away. Then he grabbed me around the waist again and picked me up, carrying me over to the bed. "Put me down, Xavier! Put me down right now!"As soon as I landed on the mattress, he.jumped onto the bed and pinned me down, covering me with his body, grinning at me mischievously. "Nu-uh, Charlene." He shook his head and placed his knees on either side of my hips, preventing me from moving anywhere. I pouted, crossing my arms over my chest. "Okay then," I murmured, tilting my head slightly

CHAPTER 32
CHARLENE'S POVHis grin widened a little and he moved so that he was sitting beside me on the bed instead of on top of me. His dark eyes shone playfully as he gazed down at me. "I told you not to change your clothes, didn't I?" He winked at me and reached forward, ruffling my hair a little. "So we need to get you all dressed up for dinner." "No!" I protested weakly, swatting at his hand as he continued to fix my hair. I scooted further down the bed, avoiding contact with him. I wasn't going to wear a dress tonight. I was going to let him dress me. But before I got the opportunity to tell him that I wasn't planning on wearing a dress, he'd already thrown the covers off of us and begun undoing the buttons at the back of my shirt. I gasped sharply and shoved my hands in front of his face. "Hey, hey, hold up!" My heart was pounding faster than ever now. "I don't want you to undress me!" "Well, it would seem that I have no choice, seeing as you haven't done anything remotely sexual in

CHAPTER 33
CHARLENE'S POV"My head whipped around to follow her. What the h*ck was that about? Who was that girl, anyway?" I felt Xavier's hand drop gently onto my shoulder as he guided me to sit down on the couch again. He sat down beside me and reached out to grab my hand as I started rubbing my thumb over the back of it absentmindedly. "What was that about?" I frowned as I thought about it and then realized what that must have been about, even as he leaned down and planted a soft kiss on the back of my neck. I jerked my head back from him, glaring up at him. "Why did you do that?" I demanded angrily. His mouth twitched upwards slightly. "Because you've looked like you need it." I glared at him furiously. If he thought that.kissing me would make me calm down, then he had another thing coming! I was still seething when he stood up abruptly, startling me from my anger. After looking briefly around the room, apparently deciding that it looked a lot messier than it had earlier, he began cle

CHAPTER 34
CHARLENE'S POVI could feel my whole body shaking, which meant that my tears were making it hard for me to breathe properly, and I struggled to keep breathing evenly, but it just got harder and harder to do so. I was aware that I was crying and struggling and struggling for air, but I didn't care. There was only one person I cared about right now, and it definitely wasn't that annoying asshole, Xavier. I gasped for air again and tried to suck in as much oxygen as possible, as I noticed that I was hyperventilating now. Finally, he spoke. "Charlene, please breathe. Calm down." My eyes flew open, and I jerked backward so fast that I stumbled. "N–no!" My voice was barely audible and I struggled desperately to take another breath to try and regulate it. "Charlene, don't run away! Please breathe with me," he begged softly, moving slowly toward me as he grabbed my arm firmly and yanked me to a stop so I didn't fall over again. I could feel tears rolling down my cheeks as I fought to s

CHAPTER 35
CHARLENE'S POVXavier's eyes softened and he reached over to hold my hand. The tears started forming immediately, and I let them flow without trying to wipe them away. I couldn't help it! This time it wasn't some stupid human emotion; it was something very personal, very private and very painful. Xavier pulled me into his side and stroked my hair for what felt like hours. But it couldn't have been more than five minutes. Finally, when my sobs became less frequent, he leaned back slightly. "Now, tell me, what happened to make you stop crying?" The tears came back faster and harder as I explained the situation. It turned into an epic tale of betrayal and heartache involving the one person I thought I could count on completely. I was sobbing again after my explanation. As I spoke, I noticed that Xavier wasn't saying anything. He just looked worried and confused. But he held my hand tightly throughout my story. By the end, my whole body hurt from the amount of sadness coursing through

CHAPTER 36
CHARLENE'S POV"Oh, my God! He was a human, wasn't he?" I exclaimed, realizing too late what I'd said. Chandler's eyes flashed as he glared at me. My stomach dropped. This had been one of the reasons why I hadn't wanted her along today because she knew. She would have known what his scent was. How could I have been so stupid? I'd almost forgotten about how close they were. Chandler cleared her throat, breaking eye contact with us both. "It doesn't matter, anyway," she said dismissively. "That was just a bit more than a normal lycanthrope. The way his body language screamed 'human', and then his scent… it was definitely a lycanthrope." She frowned. "Oh my…" I replied."We're probably going to have to look for a pack nearby. There's some unusual animal tracks here, though…" She gestured vaguely to our surroundings, taking in the forest. I swallowed hard as an overwhelming sense of dread settled into my gut. Something bad was going to happen. It had already happened. We didn't need t

CHAPTER 37
CHARLENE'S POV"So…." His voice cut through my thoughts suddenly. "Any ideas?" My eyebrows shot up into my hairline, "Any ideas what?" He snorted as if I'd been particularly stupid. "About where to go. Do you know of anyplace else around here?" "Umm... No. There is a small community nearby though. If there's nothing else around, then we can probably try there." "Great!" He clapped his hands together in excitement and started walking in a random direction. I followed behind him. "That should get us out of town pretty fast." He mumbled darkly under his breath. My curiosity spiked. I decided to ask him about it later. For now, I just wanted to leave the topic as far away from me as possible. "How did you even manage to get attacked in the first place? Did you fight back?" He shook his head quickly. "No, no, I didn't do anything to provoke it. It just came out of nowhere." "Do you think someone did it intentionally?" His eyebrows furrowed in concern. "Who knows… but I guess I sho

CHAPTER 38
CHARLENE'S POVWe hid in the foliage and watched as several people passed by. One man walked with the hand of an elderly woman on his arm. Two young men played catch with their hands and grinned at each other. Another girl chased her mother with a broom and giggled happily. All the people looked so normal. Even after witnessing such a horrific crime against humanity, even seeing people I loved and cared for in danger, the world around me still managed to make me feel safe. Even when there really is no reason to stay in one place for fear of the next attack. I smiled softly as we continued to observe the peaceful scene. "This isn't so bad, is it?" he asked softly, watching me watch everyone else. I blushed and shook my head. He smiled. "Why?" I asked."N-nothing. We should probably get back and wait for daylight before we move further into the forest." "Yeah, probably," I said reluctantly. "We still need to find somewhere safe where we can sleep before nightfall.'' "Yeah, I know,"

CHAPTER 39
CHARLENE'S POV "Where do you think you're going?" Xavier called from behind me, his hands folded behind his back, as he surveyed the village with an almost bored look in his eye. His eyes flicked down, searching for something. He sighed and turned away from me, starting to walk towards his hut. I ran after him. "Xavier, where are we going?" I asked, catching up with him and walking beside him. The ground felt cool against my bare feet. It helped soothe the burn from yesterday's incident. Maybe it would help today as well. My thoughts kept racing, and even the simple act of walking helped ground me. I took some deep breaths and closed my eyes. When the village fell silent around us, I opened one eye and watched him take another few steps forward. His stride was confident and unhurried, his pace slow and measured. If there was anything strange about this village, I couldn't tell what it was. It seemed normal enough. No sign of any recent fighting, no scorch marks on the cobblestone

CHAPTER 40
CHARLENE'S POVNot ever. They couldn't. No matter how much they hurt me. No one spoke. The silence hung in the air between us as my friend tried to figure out an answer. Finally, Xavier pulled another cigarette from his pocket and lit it with a match. Then he handed it over to me, saying, "You smoke too much." When I hesitated, he sighed and leaned closer to whisper conspiratorially, "Just pretend I'm your dad." It made me laugh. He loved telling jokes, which he said helped him relax. But he also joked about stuff that was serious sometimes. Stuff that really hurts. I felt sad for him. Because it seemed like no matter how many times I told him it was okay, no matter how often I told him that I understood, he'd never listen. I took a long drag off the cigarette and blew out a long stream of smoke. After a minute, I realized he wasn't going to say anything else. I shrugged. "Thanks. For listening. I guess." He shook his head at me and rolled his eyes. "Of course, I listened. You kn
