Prologue

People around me always talked about supernatural creatures and how they walked among us, humans. I've never been one to embrace mysticism and popular beliefs; truth be told, I've always been skeptical about life. I wasn't the type to believe in religions, supernatural stories, or even aliens. I always believed that such stories were told so many times that they caused collective hysteria, something that justified these visions and encounters with the unknown. In childhood, my dream was to grow up, get into a good college, and have a good enough excuse to leave this small, outdated town and go somewhere that truly understood me. The only people who understood me in this town were my friends Austin and Pierre. Even though my twin sister was the person who understood me the best, the one who truly felt that everyone in this town was crazy and that we had to get out of here, we weren't as close, and it only worsened with her move to our grandparents' house. As the years passed, I graduall

Violet Hathaway Hathaway Residence hours before Today is Annabel's birthday, my 2 year old little sister. She looks a lot like me, everyone says so. Annabel is white, with black hair and blue eyes. She's like I was when she was little, except for her eye color, mine are black. My name is Violet and I am the eldest of the twins. My identical twin is named Sarah, but she's been living in another city since Mom found out she was pregnant with Anna. I think Sarah just wanted to have her own life, so when she was sixteen, Dad allowed her to live with Grandma on the farm. Fortunately, today she is here. Let's celebrate our sister's birthday as a family. I help Sarah move the party decorations out into the backyard. Several pink and white balloons are hanging in an arch. Behind the arch is a pink panel with some of your favorite cartoon characters. Colored lights adorn the backyard, which is filled with light wood tables and chairs. In the center of each table is a vase of white roses,

Visions

People laughed and chatted lightly as I stared at the phone, oblivious to my growing apprehension. I stared at the footprint photo, and the image of the imposing brown wolf echoed in my mind. However, even considering the size of this wolf, I suspected that the paw in question did not belong to him. It appeared to be from an even larger animal. Jeez, is it possible that there is an even bigger wolf in this forest? Soon, legends about men turning into beasts and being exiled to the forest occurred to me. If these legends were true, then the stories about demonic creatures that fed on human blood could also be true. I laugh to myself, amused by my own imagination. This can't be real. There must be a logical explanation for all of this. I decide to search the internet for information about “Direwolves in the Legalville forest”. To my surprise, the only results I find are reports from locals about encounters with giant creatures, legends and intriguing stories. I come across a blurry

Ruthless killer

The birthday party was lively. The children played and many were almost asleep at the time of congratulations. I found it funny how children were able to expend their energy easily. With Dad's help, I cleaned up the mess in the yard." So, daughter. " His calm voice catches my attention. " Tell me what happened to you." Nothing happened. " I speak confused. " What are you talking about?" I know that something very serious must have happened to you. " His voice sounds worried and he looks me in the eyes. His attitude gives me goosebumps. " You stayed quiet in your corner, I thought it was tiredness. But after you left your room, it seemed to get worse. She became quieter, she stayed at the table the whole time. You didn't even pay attention to Dália when she came to talk to you. You're not like that, you're always the life of the party.I give an awkward smile at his comment. His power of observation was one of the things I liked most. Dad always knew when I was bad or sad. He was one

Running for survival

I spot the pair of black boots slowly approaching me. I wanted to move, but fear paralyzed me. My hair is yanked, and I scream in pain.I look towards my assailant's face and am shocked to see entirely black eyes and a blood-covered face.He didn't seem human; his skin was extremely pale, as if there was no blood in his body.Desperation fills me as I recognize that face. It's the same mysterious man from the party. I struggle in his arms, and he smiles satisfied. His hand touches my neck but quickly recoils upon reaching the chain, as if it hurts him. He snarls at me like a cat about to attack another.I see Dad crawling down the hallway, his body covered in cuts. Dad thrusts one of his hunting knives into the creature's ankle, and I hear its guttural scream."Cursed worm!" he shouts before throwing me downstairs. I feel my body ache with each step. "How dare you try to hurt me, you insolent worm?""Run, Violet!" Dad yells as I struggle to get up. His eyes lock onto mine, determinatio

Can you understand us?

"I still think we should kill this girl and then eat her," a hoarse female voice speaks disdainfully. "Don't make that face; I bet you thought the same when you saw her unconscious body in the forest.""Don't be stupid," another irritated female voice retorts. "You know Dylan will never allow anyone to touch his new human pet.""So be it," the first voice says with disgust. "If no one devours her, she'll end up like all the others.""I wouldn't say that if I were you, sis," a man speaks with enthusiasm. "She survived an attack by a bloodsucker; that alone is impressive. Now knowing it wasn't just any demon but..."His voice is interrupted by a canine growl, as if he's about to reveal forbidden information.A flash of memories passes through my mind, and I feel a pain in my chest remembering my family. They were dead, and it was my fault. If not for my foolish actions, they would all still be alive, and I wouldn't be going through this.I hear another growl, and my body shivers, going

Transformation

I woke up feeling a sharp pain in my leg. I opened my eyes and saw that I was in a strange room, different from the one Dylan left me in. I look around trying to identify something, but everything was new to me. I strain my vision to see a silhouette in the darkness. A lamp is turned on, and its light makes my eyes hurt. When I finally manage to focus my vision, I see a woman sitting in a chair in front of the bed.Her light brown hair was shaved on the side and fell over her left shoulder. Despite the dim lighting in the room, I could notice her delicate features and a scar on her cheek. She raised an eyebrow when she realized I had been watching her for too long."You finally woke up, human."That voice... I remember it. It's the same voice that said she wanted to devour me. I widen my eyes and try to sit up in bed, but the pain in my leg makes me let out a loud groan. Curse! I was trapped in an unknown room with this maniac."Like staring at people? What's wrong? I don't bite." Her

Am I safe?

I felt like an alien, with Ivy's curious and fascinated gazes. It was as if the young girl were watching a wildlife documentary on Animal Planet; any of my actions elicited surprised looks and sounds of astonishment. With my peripheral vision, I could observe her facial expressions. She was truly spontaneous, and her face revealed her thoughts. Unlike many people I had met in life, I sensed no malice or cunning in her observation. It was more a curious thing, as if she had never seen another person before. Somewhat ironic, considering that, as far as I knew, she belonged to a species called 'moonhowlers.'"Ivy... Darling." My calm tone caught her attention. I set aside my soup bowl and stared at her before giving a sarcastic look. "Don't you think it's better to take a photo? It'll last longer!"Ivy tilted her head to the side, like a little dog trying to understand its owner's commands. Her confused expression was extremely adorable, almost making me feel guilty for the cruel thoughts

The attack

With each passing second, the screams and growling sounds outside escalated, creating an even tenser atmosphere. I was alone in the room, my mind working at a frenetic speed as I tried to comprehend the situation I found myself in.The minutes seemed to drag on, and the uncertainty of what was happening left me restless. My leg hurt, and I wished I could move freely to better understand the situation. Being stuck in an unfamiliar room while chaos unfolded outside was an unpleasant sensation. Finally, after a period that felt like an eternity, Ivy returned to the room. Her face was troubled, and her hands trembled slightly. She closed the door behind her and sighed deeply before speaking."I'm sorry for leaving you alone. Things outside were out of control for a while." Her chest rose and fell with irregular breaths.I looked at her, searching for answers. The concern on her face told me that things weren't going well. I needed to know what was happening."What's going on?" My voice ca

Stay with me

The punches and kicks on the door made me freeze. I was terrified, feeling as if my feet were glued to the ground, and my entire body had been frozen."Come on, jump!" Ivy spoke nervously. "No need to be afraid; I'll catch you."I heard the sound of the cabinet being dragged due to the force of the punches and kicks on the door. A crack opened, revealing enough space to see her wide, restless green eyes, as if she were about to attack. My body snapped out of the trance as I saw her hand reaching through the crack, forcing the door open.My heart raced as I finally gathered courage and leaped through the window, landing on the roof with a painful impact. The soft snow covered the roof, but my injured leg protested with every step I took. With difficulty, I started walking on the slippery tiles, my breath forming small clouds of vapor. Ivy, below me, urged me to keep going."Violet, you can do it!" She whispered, her voice filled with anxiety. In the midst of a shiver, I jumped off the
