Chapter 31: Taking Every Inch
Phoenix's POV Tatum is silent in the passenger seat beside me as we drive through the streets of Dallas. My brain tells me I need to focus on the road ahead of me instead of the woman beside me. But I just can't help myself when Tatum is as breathtaking as she is. I just want to reach over and caress her face, reveling in the way her big eyes peer up at me, sparkling with excitement. But I can't do that because I need to keep my hands on the steering wheel and my eyes on the road to avoid crashing into oncoming traffic. "I appreciate you letting me crash in your room until my dad gets out," Tatum says quietly from beside me. I turn my head long enough to see that she's already looking at me, the light from the street lamps moving across her face. God, she looks beautiful. Clearing my throat, I grip the steering wheel a little tighter as I adjust slightly in my seat. "It's not a problem, Tate. There is no way in hell I'd let you come to a foreign city and stay by yours

Chapter 32: Good Choices
Tatum's POV "Dad, are you sure you're okay?" I ask, wrapping my arm around his waist to hoist him out of the back seat. "I don't want you to–" "Tate, I'm fine," he says with a laugh, turning his head to look down at me as I guide us toward the front steps that lead up to the house. "I managed to leave the hospital, walk through the airport, get on a plane, and make it back home in one piece. I think I'm capable of getting into the house on my own." I sigh as I direct him to the railing along the stairs so he can use that to assist him. "You're right. I know that. But I'm still worried about you. I just don't want you to hurt yourself after having just left the hospital this morning." Dad waves me off as I walk back to the taxi to collect our suitcases, which the kind driver has already pulled out of the trunk for us. I thank the older man with a warm smile as I snag the handles and walk back toward the stairs. I smile as I watch my dad slowly climb the stairs, holding ont

Chapter 33: Vivid Nightmares
Phoenix's POVThe rain and wind slamming against the windows in my bedroom rattled throughout the room, making my heart leap into my throat. I held my breath as I walked through the quiet and dark house toward the staircase. I heard the majority of the screams and yelling coming from the living room not too long again. When I heard the front door slam, I knew it was my opportunity to go downstairs and see if my mom is okay. This is a regular occurrence with my mom and dad—screaming and yelling at each other until everything simply turns silent, allowing me to breathe properly again. But this time… something feels different. Off, even. But I couldn't quite put my finger on why. I'm twelve years old now, which means I should have enough courage to protect my mom from my dad, but I simply just can't bring myself to leave my room to go to her side. It's as if a force is pinning my feet to the ground and paralyzing my body, forcing me to stay put and not intervene, no mat

Chapter 34: Pushing Him Too Far
Tatum's POV There is nothing better than reading a nice, smutty book while the rainy weather outside soothes me. It's the perfect weather to curl under my blankets and get lost in another person's world for just a couple of hours. When a particularly loud gust of wind slams a handful of rain into the window across my bedroom, I tear my eyes away from the words on the page to stare outside at the large tree swaying in the darkness, the light from my room illuminating the bark and leaves. The scene would be perfect for a horror movie where someone tries to break in and kill you. Or maybe that's just my crime junkie brain convincing me of that. I don't linger on what is happening outside for too long and instead, go back to reading the well-written words on the page. The book follows the story of a lonely cowboy trying to find his true love, but of course, the two encounter many challenges along the way. It's such an easy story to get lost in, allowing me to not focus on my dad

Chapter 35: Tough Love
Tatum's POV The insistent buzzing of my phone is enough to wake me from the deep sleep I was in. My head feels groggy and my limbs are heavy as I roll over to grab my phone. After Nico stormed out last night, I found it hard to get to sleep because I couldn't stop replaying what happened in my head. I felt guilty for asking him such a personal question, but then I had no idea that it would trigger him that badly. For hours, I sat awake wondering why this man would be afraid of a storm. Surely, it must have something to do with his childhood, which I know next to nothing about besides the fact that he and Khai used to play baseball together at a young age. I sat staring at my phone wondering if I should call and apologize for pushing him too hard, but then I told myself that with how angry he was when he left, he likely wouldn't have answered the phone anyway. Instead, I lay in bed and stared at the roof, getting lost in my thoughts until sleep consumed me. This is why I f

Chapter 36: He Needs You, Tatum
Tatum's POV I haven't been to a Cats home game here in L.A. for a few weeks now, so it's nice being able to get out on this lovely Saturday night and watch the team hopefully kill it after their loss last week in Seattle. The sunlight beaming in through the front window of the car warms the exposed skin on my arms, and there is not a cloud in the sky as we drive along the highway toward the stadium. With my dad still recovering, I offered to drive us so he could relax and not have to worry about anything other than the game tonight. I know he's deep in thought when I glance over to see him staring out the passenger window with his hand propping up his chin. The lines on his forehead are deep and his eyes are mostly unblinking. I would think he's being a little weird, but I just know that's his concentration face. And with him not being able to go to work until this week, I just know he wants to do everything in his power to make sure the Cats have a good game and walk away

Chapter 37: Opening Up is Hard
Tatum's POV "Take it easy tonight, Khai. And make sure you have a long, hot bath when you get home to relax the muscles." Khai salutes my dad with a cheeky grin. "Will do, Coach. Get home safe, okay?" Dad returns the salute gesture and laughs. "Will do. Also, did you see Phoenix after the game? I wanted to have a chat with him, but he must have already left." I look up from my phone, mid-way through writing a text message to Sammie, at the mention of Nico. The game finished almost an hour ago, with the Cats winning, but I haven't seen Nico since he walked off the field ahead of me. His leaving without saying goodbye must be unusual, especially for my dad if he is looking for him. Khai looks over at Nico's locker, which is empty, before turning back with a shrug. "I guess he must've left. I didn't see him after the game, so he must've dipped out pretty quickly." Dad hums and rubs his chin with his forefingers, nodding slowly. "Okay. That's fine. I'll catch him at t

Chapter 38: Jealousy Looks Cute on You
Tatum's POV "Come on, Tate, let's go out tonight! It's a Friday night. We need to leave the house to have a drink and get our boogie on. What do you say?" I stare at Sammie as she spins on my desk chair, staring up at the ceiling. I can't help but laugh at the sight of her, shaking my head as I relax into my pillows, also staring up at the ceiling. "I guess we can," I say slowly. Friday night is typically when Nico and I meet up for our weekly catch-up, but he messaged earlier to say that he had other plans for tonight, so he wouldn't be able to see me until tomorrow. "F*ck it. Why not? You can choose where we go." "Mario's has been one of the hot spots in L.A. as of late. Why don't we just go there?" Sammie suggests as the chair spins to a halt. "It's familiar and you know the owner." I laugh. "I haven't seen Al in a while, so it'll be nice to see how he's doing." "There's the spirit," Sammie cheers as she stands up on wobbly legs, stumbling to sit next to my

Chapter 39: Realizing What is Important
Phoenix's POV Every muscle in my body aches as I slump to the ground on my knees, my head dipping forward as I try to inhale as much air into my lungs as my body will allow. Sweat is pouring down the contours of my face and dripping onto my clothed thighs. Holy f*ck. I'm exhausted. "That last throw was amazing," Coach says, clapping his hands as he walks toward me. We have the training field to ourselves today, just me and Coach. He asked if I could come in for a quick training session after work before our game coming up this Sunday. I agreed because I never want to let Coach down, and of course, it doesn't hurt to fit in an extra training session. The only thing that hurts is my f*cking body, but it's nothing a warm bath can't fix when I get home and a good night's sleep before work tomorrow. Panting, I lift my head to look up at Coach as he approaches me, peering at him through the curls obstructing my vision. "You think so?" I ask, pulling my lip ring between

Chapter 40: Enough is Enough
Phoenix's POV Slipping my black suit jacket over my shoulders, and adjusting the cufflinks, I take one last look at myself before I head outside to the driver waiting for me. My curls are still a mess, but I did my best to tame them. I normally wouldn't let them grow this long, but Tatum has expressed how much she likes them long, so I've left them uncut for her. The black tailored suit fits snugly against my body, and my lip ring gleams under the lights of my bathroom. I have been meaning to take it out for years because as the CEO of ReidCo, I should probably present myself as less of a delinquent who has tattoos and piercings, and more as a professional businessman. But in all honesty, the tattoos and piercings are a part of who I am. I don't want to change just because people care about my appearance. Besides, Tatum likes it when my lip ring slides against her creamy thighs, and she enjoys tracing all of my tattoos when we lie in bed together. And to me, that's all that m
