Chapter 40
TrinityI struggled to my feet and ran. I didn’t know where I was running or for how long I ran, but no matter how I ran, I couldn’t get the sight of him tearing into those men out of my mind. I could still smell the blood gushing out onto the sidewalk. I could still hear the crunching of bone. My chest felt tight as I panted, trying to get as far away as I possibly could. I reached a major street. Cars zipped by. People filled the streets. The lights of the streets and buildings filled my eyes. I was safe for now. But how long would that last? Mark had warned me, hadn’t he? And I hadn’t listened. He wasn’t human. More than that, he was likely the person who murdered the former dean. My stomach turned. He hadn’t looked human at all. He hadn’t looked like the man I’d kissed at the lake. He looked like a monster—a vampire. I shuddered. How could I have fallen in love with a vampire? A demon?More importantly, what was I going to do now? What could I do? Confront him? Pretend I didn

Chapter 41
Lucianus I watched the hunter, who seemed far too interested in my prey, steal out the back door, chasing the shadow I had created. Then, I listened for her to move from the living room. I drifted inside, stealing through the shadows and stalking her down the hall to her room. She looked back and around with wide, terrified eyes as she crept down the hallway. Still, I was relieved. There were minor injuries from the crash and the people hired to kill her, but she was safe. She shuddered and crawled into bed, careful not to turn out the lights or get too close to the windows. It was amusing that she thought that would keep her from me. Her friend, the hunter, was right, at least. Trinity was safe from my wrath. I listened to her drift off to sleep before climbing into the bed beside her, simply to watch her for now. My appetite was mostly sated from draining those fools. The night was quiet around us as I listened to Mark chasing the shadows down the street and away from the house.

Chapter 42
TrinityI dreamed that I was flying over an endless red desert. I was afraid, and my heart was hammering, but I was also struck by the beauty of the landscape. The air was warm. The sky was filled with blood-red light, and dark wings carried me across it towards a towering dark castle that looked something out of a fantasy movie. Then, I was falling into darkness. I saw the swirl of a skirt trimmed in red-gold. I tasted something coppery in my mouth. My stomach lurched. Then, I fell hard onto a cold stone floor, and pain shot through me. I heard someone screaming for help and mercy. Someone’s eyes stared at me as tears rolled down their face, and the expression went vacant. I realized, with horror, that the person was dead. Then, the person vanished. Beautifully decorated walls and a shadow-covered portrait rose up around me. I smelled perfume. Something, some animal, growled at me, and I was shoved back. I felt my clothes being ripped from my body. I heard myself screaming. Pain s

Chapter 43
TrinityI was speechless. I couldn’t believe that he was here. How could he be here as the new dean of my school? He was dressed so handsomely in a nice suit. He smiled at the group and spoke quietly with the assistant dean as he took the microphone. I was… a bit happy to see him, confused and scared too. He was a murderer. I knew that. I could still smell the blood being spilled. I could still see the way his eyes glowed in the darkness. My heart started to speed up at the thought of him coming here to silence me. Was I putting the other people that worked here in danger simply by being here?I slipped behind one of the other students, hoping to hide from him. I didn’t know if it would work, but I had to try. Slowly, I worked my way toward the door, hoping not to be noticed by anyone. Most of the people I worked with and the students were still ignoring me because of what had happened to the previous dean and the way the police kept coming to talk to me. My stomach churned at the t

Chapter 44
TrinityAfter I left his office, I tried to focus on the work I had to do for the rest of my shift, but my mind kept going back to the look on his face. What sort of surprise would it be? Would we have sex again? Would he do something new? It had been a while since we’d been together, and I was already craving the way he made me feel. I thought back to the way we had sex in his car on that crowded street and shuddered. It had been as if he couldn’t get enough of me, and I loved that feeling. All my doubts about him, the fear of him, had seemingly vanished. The fact that he loved me was all I could think about it. It was all that mattered to me. As I packed up to go, I couldn’t help but get more excited. I got my things together and headed out. Just as I stepped out of the building, a familiar car glided to a stop in front of me.The door opened, and I saw Lucian inside.“Get in.”I bit my lip and slid into the backseat with him. The divider was already up. I didn’t know if that mean

Chapter 45
TrinityWe stayed on the couch for a little longer. I didn’t know why he was holding me like this, but it was nice. He was so warm. Slowly, his breathing calmed down. A few moments later, he lifted me out of his lap and stood, heading back to my bedroom. I didn’t hear anything for a while, but it felt odd that he just got up like that.“Lucian? Are you okay?”He returned as he shrugged on his jacket. The white shirt was stained with blood. I bet the jacket would be stained too. “I have to go,” he said. I stood and went to him, wrapping my arms around his waist. I clung to him. “Can’t you stay? We didn’t even….”My face heated as I couldn’t get the words out. He lifted my chin up and kissed me deeply until I was gasping for breath and thought maybe he would stay and finish what we had started.“I have to go,” he said again. His eyes were glowing again, but he didn’t seem angry. “I will come see you again when I have the time.”“But when will that be?”“I don’t know,” he said and wal

Chapter 46
TrinityThe morning after Lucian left, Mark called me. “What do you mean you know?”“I know,” I said. “He told me---”“Trinity---”“And I’m fine.” “You’re not fine!” He cried. “That monster---”“Don’t call him that,” I said. “He’s… been honest with me. He’s not a monster. He was just protecting me.”“Don’t be naïve,” Mark growled. “He wants something. He’s just---”“Mark, I don’t want to talk about this anymore.”“But—”“I’m fine,” I said. “Really. I can handle it.”He was about to protest, but I hung up. I looked at the screen as it flashed his contact information again and again, but I didn’t pick up. I didn’t want to hear any more warnings. I didn’t need to hear it and I wasn’t going to do anything that Mark thought I should. Lucian had been so honest with me. He loved me, and I loved him. Finally, the phone stopped ringing. I knew that probably wasn’t going to be the end of it, but Mark was off somewhere for something. I didn’t know when he’d be back, but I didn’t care either.

Chapter 47
TrinityIt was odd for us to be meeting in the daytime, but I didn’t question it. I wanted to see him, and depending on how long we’d meet up, I might have some time to act on my plan to thank him. He asked for us to meet in the middle of the city, but he didn’t send a car to pick me up. That was a little weird, but I wasn’t going to complain. I took the bus there and searched for him once I arrived in the area. I walked towards the square he said we would meet in, but I didn’t see him. Then, my phone rang. “Behind you,” Lucian said. I turned around and saw him standing near store’s awning, covered from head to toe and carrying an umbrella. He wasn’t wearing all black, but he was wearing a dark suit and hat. He reminded me of an old vampire movie. I looked around wondering if someone else thought it was strange, but no one even seemed to notice him. He looked out of place, but it was normal. Vampires feared sunlight, didn’t they?I hung up and headed towards him, looking up at him

Chapter 48
TrinityI woke up the next morning in the hotel room with a smile on my face. We had had sex all night: first on the beach, then he’d taken me up to our hotel room. I didn’t remember all of it, but I could still feel the ache from it all and it made me happy. I sat up expecting to find Lucian beside me, but I was alone. There was a note on the bedside table. Call for room service. I’ll be back soon.I smiled and pulled my legs to my chest, wondering how long he’d been gone and if he’d be back before I really got hungry. A beep filled the air, and the door opened. Lucian walked in, fully dressed in a dark blue suit. He looked at me still in bed and cocked an eyebrow at me. Then, he looked at his watch. “I must have been a little rougher on you than I thought.”My face heated as I felt the necklace settle against my chest. He came around the bed cupped my face, turned my head to both sides. He kissed me gently nipped at my lip.“As much as I would like more of you. I have things to a

Chapter 49
LucianIt took everything in me not to sink my fangs into her neck. The way she clung to me and pleaded was still fresh in my mind as I left the house. I couldn’t have her the way she was asking me to for a bunch of reasons. She was falling under my control quickly. The bond we had was still as strong as it had been and it was making it so easy to make her fall in love with me. It was making it easier to make sure that when she remembered, if she remembered, she wouldn’t care. I could still feel the blood pact thrumming in my chest. She was nervous and sad. I felt her worry and anxiety, and almost smiled. She was always so worried about things. My wife, Trinitia, had been that way too. I pressed a little, searching through the bond. I could tell she was questioning our relationship. How were we going to stay together? I frowned at the question. What was she thinking about? I pressed a little harder. It was hard to get complete thoughts at the distance and while still suppressing th
