Chapter 3
The next morning, I found myself sitting down in a very comfortable chair and sharing a cup of coffee with Vickie. I have been awake since five a.m., a bad habit of being forced by Mathis to be already awake, starting my housework before he left for work. I didn't intend to come down. I was still feeling a slight nervous, but I'm not a rude woman, and when another woman, especially a kind woman like Vickie, asked you to share a cup of coffee with her, you did. No buts about it, you sat down and enjoyed that cup.“What brings you to our little town, honey?” she asked me gently. “More cream?” she asked again and held up the bottle of vanilla creamer before adding. “You like vanilla creamer?”“No Vickie, thank you I have enough and vanilla is good-” I started to tell her that the reason I had come here was personal, and I wasn't ready to talk about it, but she raised her purple manicured hand.“Just good? Meaning, you don't like it that much. Which flavor is your favorite?”she asked an

Three hours later, I hear a knock on my door. I quickly tossed my chip bag on the other side of the bed and stood up, my heart beating hard as I stared at the door.Is it Mathis?Did he find me?I feel myself starting to have a panic attack, grabbing my chest, and I try to remind myself to breathe slowly. I needed to go, I shouldn't have stopped, I should have just kept driving. I thought I was safe, I'm states away from Mathis, three states, and a long way from Washington. I thought I ran far enough away. I thought he wouldn't be able to find me here. I was careful. I used cash; I left my cell phone at home; I changed my hair, and I'm not wearing my glasses anymore. “If you ever embarrass me in public again, Mia, I will fucking kill you,” his threat playing inside my head like a broken record.“It's your fault that I hurt you. If you listened and be a good wife, I wouldn't get so upset, baby,” he whispered before kissing my broken fingers he slammed in a door when I couldn't tell h

Chapter 5
I had my morning cup with Vickie. She reminded me it was just an interview. I didn't have to take the job if I was too uncomfortable. I also reminded her it would work out. What I didn't tell her was the reason it was going to work out, and that reason was because I didn't want her to hold back the payments for my motel room rent.I appreciated that she would do something so kind and sweet for me, but I can't let her. I have to start taking care of myself. I have to get back on my feet because she is right. Mathis doesn't know where I am. I was careful.I was beyond careful. I also needed to learn to take care of myself. I have to learn about paying bills about waking up early for work. Mathis never allowed me to pay the bills, and once he started giving me an allowance, he further took away my checkbooks. I have been a woman who has depended on a man my entire life, and now was the time for me to take control of that, take control of my life.So here I am, standing at the front

I shared the good news with Vickie when I got back to the hotel. She was excited for me before informing me that she had complete faith in her grandson. I didn't bother to tell her about Beth. I knew that if I did, she would have told Conor about it, and I didn't want to be the reason that Beth gets in trouble even if she does deserve it. Jonas and Vickie invited me over for supper last night, and it was delicious. Vickie really knows how to cook. I offered to help with the dishes once we were done eating, and I had accidentally dropped one of her pretty purple plates. Sweet Vickie, of course, knew what I was about to do and quickly assured me it was okay, and she had plenty of other dishes. She wouldn't miss the one. She then grabbed my hand and led me out of the room after Jonas offered to clean the broke pieces off the floor. I'm now standing in front of the door of the Sleepy Sheep again, trying to gather the courage to walk inside and not look like a scared mouse this time.

Chapter 7
I was extremely nervous as I walked around the bar, holding my little note pad tightly in my palms. I have done been flirted with three times so far, and it's not exactly a welcoming thing right now. It took a few hours until I was able to feel comfortable around the men. I tried giving the guys customers space and would walk basically around the whole bar wanting to keep my distance from them all, but at the end; it was pointless. I ended up surprising myself when I could talk to the men customers without feeling like I was going to get hurt. They all had friendly tones and welcoming smiles, and it helped me be able to feel more comfortable. “I need a beer,” the nosy guy from yesterday growled as soon as his ass touched the barstool. “Maybe make it two.”I raised my eyebrows and looked towards the clock on the wall. It wasn't even noon yet.I kept my opinion to myself, grabbed two bottles of beers and set them in front of the man. “Want something to eat?” I asked, wanting to start

Chapter 8
Conors P.O.V.I heard my door being pushed open and thinking it was Mia; I looked up, sighing in frustration, and saw it was my ex, my Sydney, and my son Johnathan, walking into my office, Sydney wearing a pissed off snarl on her lips.“So you're fucking your employees now, huh?” She demanded, put her hands on her hips. “I can't believe you. Is this the type of behavior you want your son to learn?”“Sydney, I suggest you stop talking like that in front of my son. I have already warned you. You shouldn't be using that type of language around him, his too little,” I growled, my frustration online growing.I already have to deal with a woman who doesn't even belong in a bar. She is much too sweet, and much too innocent to deal with the drunken assholes that wonder into my bar. Now, my ex-wife wants to throw around her attitude, hurling accusations like she has a right to know who I'm fucking or who I'm not fucking, and she is doing that in front of my son. Like always.I swear she was t

Mia's P.O.V.I watched as that rude woman marched out of Conors office, dragged her son through the door, swung the door open, forcing it to bang loudly against the wall, and stormed out of the bar. Whatever they had just been discussing apparently had not gone her way because the woman was seriously pissed off. Now I kind of understand why they were no longer together. She was toxic, just like Mathias, just a different toxic, but toxic nonetheless. “I can't stand that bitch,” Beth snarled as her eyes stayed narrowed on the bar door. “She always comes in here and fucks with Conor, and the poor boy is in the middle of it.”“Um yeah, she accused me and Conor of you know,” I said, embarrassed to say the actual words. I didn't want to sound uncultured and talk about me and my boss in that manner. “Of fucking?” Beth giggled. “Girl, you work in a bar now, you're going to have to get used to hearing that word round here.”“Oh I don't

“What's wrong?” He demanded as soon as his eyes landed on my face, worried face.“Nothing. How did you find me?” I asked him, as I looked around his body, not understanding what could bring him to my motel door this late, and then I saw the pizza box. “I'm confused,” I whispered. “Are you having dinner with your grandparents?” “No, I actually stopped and grabbed the pizza for you,” he shrugged. “I went to pick up my son from his mother's house and the bitch wasn't there. I called her five times and each time she forwarded my call, and I'm trying to take my mind off doing something I shouldn't do, which is taking my son from his mother. So, instead of doing that, I figured you would be tired after your first day and grabbed pizza,” he informed me and held up the delicious smelling pizza box. “I didn't know what you liked, so I got half pepperoni and half supreme.”“You're here to give me pizza?” I asked, even more confused than I just was, and wrapped my arms around my belly.“Yeah,”

Chapter 11
The knocking on the door grew louder. I tried focusing on my breathing, trying to force my heart rate to calm down. Conors hands on my shoulder only caused my heart to skip a beat. “It's okay, Riley,” he whispered and ran his rough fingers up and down my arms. “No one is going to hurt you again.” “I'm-” I tried to tell him I'll be fine as soon as I could catch my breath, but whoever it was on the other side of the door pounded. “What the fuck,” Conor snarled. I felt his hands sliding off my shoulders and turned towards the door. “Who the fuck is it?” He stormed towards the door. “Conor,” I warned him, thinking that maybe opening that door right now was not a good idea. Whoever it was didn't sound happy. “Maybe we should call the cops,” I mumbled and bit the inside of my lip. “I don't need to call the cops, Mia,” he growled and raised his hand to open the door, but before he could, the person shouted from the other side of the door. “I know you are in there,” Sydney, his child'
