May’s POVThe cool air of the office was a stark contrast to the heated atmosphere of the café I had just left, and it welcomed me with open arms, just like Asher’s arms had drawn me in.As I distributed the coffee to the people that were in the boardroom, I thought about the offer Gary had made me about not getting the coffee if I didn’t want to, and I wished I had taken it right before I said it wasn’t a problem. But I didn’t know I was going to see Asher in that café anyway, so I couldn’t be blamed. The people muttered their thanks, and light-hearted offer of gratitude made me glad I did went for the coffee. However, after that, I barely registered any other things they said through the haze of my own thoughts. “Thanks, May! You're so kind," Jenna said with a grin, taking a sip of her latte, but I didn’t even look at her long enough, or say anything in return.I just nodded. When someone else, I think Nora, thanked me for the coffee as well, saying something about me being a lifesa

May’s POV The humid air of the Lanzarote Airport clung to my skin as we strode through the arrival gate, and I just couldn’t wait until we were in the car already. At least, I was sure the car would have an air conditioning feature, so it would cool me down a little. I should have tried to tie up my hair in a bun before stepping off the plane but I didn’t think it was going to be this uncomfortable. My hair was sticking to my neck and making it feel itchy against my skin. If only I had thought of so many things, like the clothes I was wearing right now. I was wearing thick clothes, a form-fitting black pants that were free from the knee, with a black Cropped Grain de Poudre Wool Vest, so I was uncomfortable. I should have checked what the weather was like before getting dressed this morning. It was late afternoon, and we had been sitting on that plane for approximately seven hours if I hadn’t miscalculated. The sun was just about ducking in the sky, so you should know how uncomfo

May’s POV I started to say something, anything just to get them out of my face, but Gary beat me to it, his voice cutting through the attack, with a steady and unfazed look, and I wondered how he did that when I was freaking out inside like this. "We're here on a business trip, nothing more," he stated firmly, giving my arm a subtle, reassuring squeeze. That wasn’t even close to helping me at all, but I appreciated the gesture. Soon, a broad-shouldered man who I would later come to know as Alejo, Gary's bodyguard in Spain arrived at the place, and he walked towards us. "Por favor, hagan espacio," Alejo commanded, his voice deep and resonant. The crowd parted, although they did that reluctantly, and he walked to us through all the sea of questions and camera flashes. "Are you and Gary planning to stay long on the island?" a voice persisted from the crowd, and I wanted to haul my bag at whoever it was. Shouldn’t they just rest and stop bothering us? "We'll be staying as long as ne

May’s POVAs we stepped through the big front door of Gary's villa, I couldn't help but gasp in amazement. Holy shit, this place as swell. The grand entrance hall was even more stunning than I had imagined it would ever be. The high ceiling was decorated with a beautifully designed chandelier that cast a warm, golden glow over the marble floors. The walls were lined with beautiful artwork, and plush furniture filled the space, creating an air of luxury and opulence that took my breath away. This looked like I might have entered a queen's quarters in some century when that was in vogue. I said a queen quarters because one could clearly see all the touch of a woman around. As if Gary could hear my thoughts, he said. “This house belonged to my mother. Her husband willed it to her after he died, and then she passed it to me after that.”Her husband! I supposed her husband wasn’t his father, and as I started to wonder what the story there was, I told myself it wasn’t any of my business. In

May’s POVNora smiled as soon as she saw me and walked to me from the car, then I saw two other women step down from the car as well, with Alejo behind them, pushing their bags.“Hey, May.” Nora said smiling.“Hello, Nora. You’re here finally. I was really surprised to hear your flight was delayed.” I said with a smile on my face. I pulled her into a hug. The woman was a nice woman when she wasn’t in a nasty mood like she was that first meeting when Asher had come over.Or maybe she had been like that because she thought I was acting privileged, but after she saw how out of it I was, she had come to talk to me and we had talked things out.“Thank goodness I’m here now. I just want to fall face down into bed and sleep,” she said.It was almost lunch time so I said. “That's good. Maybe you can put in a few hours of sleep before lunch.” She nodded, and then she looked at the two women that came with her.“Huh, May! Meet Sandy and Tiara. They’re from the financial and sales department, th

May’s POVStepping out of the steam-filled bathroom, I rubbed the fog off the mirror, still feeling the warmth of the hot shower on my skin.Damn, I felt so refreshed. The bathtub was just so nice and I could stay in there forever but unfortunately, we have somewhere to be soon. My reflection stared back at me, fresh-faced and refreshed. I smiled, looking at my blonde hair clinging to my head like a drenched rat. I had washed it again, so I needed to dry it. Quickly, I plugged it in and dried my hair as fast as I could before dropping it and walking to the door.I had left it half opened, I realized, and anyone could have walked in or peeped in if they wanted to.As I opened the door fully, my eyes fell on a sight that made my heart do a little flip, and I realized someone had walked in here.It was a beautiful red dress, and it was laid out neatly on the bed, its fabric rich and inviting. Beside it, a small box held what I assumed were shoes, and a tiny note rested on top of it all

Asher’s POVTonight was off with a very dull start, or maybe it was the way I was feeling that caused this. The club's pulsing lights and the sound of the music should have been enough to distract me, but there I was, slouched in the VIP section, phone in hand, scrolling mindlessly. I just wasn’t interested in anything, and I have absolutely no idea why I was feeling that way.Brent was off to the side, chatting up some girl who seemed more interested in his wallet than his charm, but I barely noticed. My thoughts were elsewhere. I felt like I was trapped in a loop that always circled back to May, thinking about her, comparing women I see to her, and closing my eyes to see her behind them. There was one thing I kept seeing though, something I couldn’t quite shake off. I couldn't shake the image of her signing those papers, the way her eyes had been filled with resignation and hurt. That sight was supposed to help me move on, it was supposed to give me relief, and space, but all it did

Asher’s POV There was a pause, then a shuffling sound on the other end. “Mr. Campbell, I…” he started but I cut him off, knowing he was just going to give an excuse now. One of the things I hated most was someone slacking off and then giving excuses to be rid of that. I just couldn't stand it at all. "No, Alex. No excuses. How could you miss something like this?" My voice was a low growl, a thin veil over my rising panic, and anger, because boy, I was really angry. I was paying him, wasn't I? Good a ridiculous amount of money at that and he didn't think he needed to deliver? "I'm sorry, sir. I had no idea she left the country. There must have been some kind of miscommunication. I'll look into it immediately," Alex's voice was apologetic, but it did nothing to cool the heat in my veins. I could almost feel my blood boiling over, but I tried not to show it too much. I was in a public place after all, and I didn’t want to be caught unaware by some lurking paparazzi. “Just fix this.”

May’s POV The old taxi creaked to a stop in front of a house that until a few weeks ago, was mine too, and I sighed with a shake of my head. So many things had happened in the last few weeks I had been last here for, when I still lived here and this place was mine as well. I handed the money I was holding to the cab driver, a kind old man who had asked me if I was all right when I entered the backseat with a warm smile at me, and told him to keep the change. I just wanted to do something nice for him as well, for the care he had shown me since I got behind his cab. “Thank you!” he said and I shook my head, gesturing with my hand that it was nothing. It was nothing anyway, it wasn't as if I bought the man a house or something. I didn't even own one, so… I trailed off my thought to think about something else. Pushing the door open, I stepped out into the familiar compound, yet now distant world of what used to be my home. This was my house, my abode, my home for those two years a

Asher’s POV May had walked in here looking like that part of the cake I love best when I was having it for dessert, the icing part of it. She was wearing a golden yellow beaded dress that was off her shoulders, with a ruched ruffle design. She had no makeup on, at least, none that I could see, and even at that, she looked so beautiful. The dress was hugging her body so perfectly, showing off those curves I was too angry and frustrated at her to see back then, and it ended an inch or two below her knee. Damn, she looked like my favorite food right now, but I hoped I wasn't looking at her like I wanted to devour her. I licked my lips even as she sat down in front of me looking so calm, like she doesn’t give a damn about how she was making me feel. She had this nice perfume on and I wanted to walk to her and sniff her, as I latched my nose onto her slim and elegant neck. I would even love to bury my face there while my hands roamed that perfect figure I didn't even let myself see bef
