Chapter 31 - Out And About
Aian stared into the fridge.Of course it was empty.Kalvin didn’t exactly strike him as the cooking type. Well, it wasn’t entirely empty but alcohol did not count as food contrary to what Kalvin seemed to think. He shut the fridge and opened the freezer underneath to find a few different sizes of ice cubes and nothing else.Aian sighed. He wanted to make something for dinner as a small gesture of thanks for staying with Kalvin for the last three days. Not that his twin flame minded, of course. He had been quite keen to make full use of having Aian around and it had left him feeling drained enough that he had spent the times Kalvin wasn’t home either sleeping or lazing around on the couch with the TV remote in hand. While he enjoyed eating takeout over the last few days, he was craving a home cooked meal and he was sure Kalvin would appreciate it as well. With another small sigh,

Chapter 32 - Eagle Eye
The mission had been a success.Of course they had to go to an expensive, high class supermarket, Kalvin’s orders, who else?Aian had initially been embarrassed walking into such a snobby place with his favourite ripped jeans and a t-shirt pulled from the collection that had been given a home in Kalvin’s ridiculously large wardrobe, but the sneers directed at him had subdued quickly once Caleb’s looming presence was spotted. While the prices continuously made Aian wince, he had to admit he was impressed with the choices available. He wandered up every single aisle, determined to not forget anything, only to be stopped in his tracks by the incredible variety of fancy and imported sweets. He ogled the shelves for a while before nabbing a couple packs of his favourite sweets; he wasn’t about to go overboard but Kalvin could spare a few dollars for treats. He spent some time picking out the various condiments re

Chapter 33 - Heart Thudding
Soft light streamed through the curtains, bathing the room in a warm but muted glow. There was barely enough light to pierce the darkness of night, it must still be early.Kalvin took a deep breath in and could faintly smell Aian’s shampoo, a clean scent with the hint of apples. He reflexively tightened his grip around his lover’s waist, pulling him closer against his chest.Aian shifted in his sleep before snuggling closer still. It had been a week since Aian came to stay in the penthouse with him after Jerry’s exposure and subsequent arrest. For all Kalvin’s power and influence, it had proven surprisingly difficult to stop more threats against the photographer.A more effective choice would have been to out Aian as Kalvin’s twin flame, but that had its own dangers. So far, few people had caught on to that knowledge and while it would be useful for the short term, it would potent

Chapter 34 - Decision
Aian slipped out of bed a few hours after Kalvin originally woke him up, leaving the man sleeping peacefully in bed.He padded into the kitchen, grabbing the chequered apron and tying it in place before he set about making a nice breakfast for his twin flame.Clearly something had been wrong. He wondered if the man had had a nightmare. It sure seemed like it.The arms around him had tightened to the point it had been getting painful and it had woke him up. It had taken a few times at saying his name to get a reaction and Aian felt an awful, painful twisting in his chest. When he finally spoke loud enough to wrench the man back to earth, Kalvin seemed to struggle to come back to the present.Aian frowned. He hadn’t liked the expression on the man’s face.Kalvin was a man who rarely showed his emotions yet he stared back at Aian with wide gray eyes and face drained white. It was such a stark con

Chapter 35 - The Correct Response
Aian stood outside Lori’s office building, large letters marking the entrance with the name of the magazine, ‘Fate’. He had just dropped off the USB stick with all the photos he had taken from the nurse interview over a week ago, apologizing for the delay.Lori waved him off once she found out that he was the one who had uncovered the Jerry Hess scandal. With a small lecture about his safety being first and next time he goes underground he only needs to email her, Lori kicked him out of the building with a promise of a catch up over coffee next time when she wasn’t so strapped for time.Aian was not looking forward to being drilled for all the details about his recently found twin flame and their relationship but at the same time, he almost wished she might have had time to talk now.He was still upset over Kalvin brushing off whatever that nightmare thing was and h

Chapter 36 - Helping Hands
“Caleb,” Sean greeted him with a hint of embarrassment at being caught undertaking cooking lessons with his charge. “I, uh…”“We’re just about finished up here, Caleb, although it’s okay if you need to go.” Aian glanced over to the guard who was still looking a little flushed.“It’s okay, Aian, I would like to help finish up…?” Sean glanced back at his team leader.“It’s fine, I can wait until you’re ready, Aian,” Caleb retreated to the door to have a quiet talk with the guards outside while Aian finished up the preparations with Sean.Ten minutes later and Aian was putting containers of pre-prepared food into the fridge and freezer while Sean saw himself out, trading places with Caleb. With lunch and a coffee handy, Aian set up his laptop and papers with all the scoop information in front of him

Chapter 37 - Spy Kids
All the planning was complete. The warehouse had been scouted and a suitable location found for Aian to snoop from and two of his guards to watch the perimeter for signs of trouble. Aian even managed to snag a nap after dinner and now felt pumped up and ready to go. Three guards stood in his living room looking surprisingly keen for the upcoming event. Honestly, it all felt a little over the top. He had a total of five guards for tonight, each with an earpiece radio device to talk to the whole team on a secure channel and multiple escape routes established, each with their own code name. Looking at the excited men in front of him all done up in dark, easy to manoeuvre in clothing complete with multiple high tech gadgets, Aian felt the need to sigh. Caleb handed over an earpiece and instructed him on how to wear it. “Isn’t this a little over the top?” “Nope. Safety first, so as long as you're safe, nothing's too much.” Aian did sigh at that but did as instructed. “This feels l

Chapter 38 - Detestable
Kalvin sat in his office with Blake and Dale, attempting to complete some paperwork around the distraction of Aian’s team’s conversations. Dale had set up a link into the channel so they could listen in on the first stakeout that the team helped with. The relief he felt when the message came through that Aian had not attempted to ditch his guards and had also asked for help was huge. They had spent the afternoon planning and scouting around the area and were about to head out to the location provided by Aian’s source. Kalvin could admit that he was incredibly distracted but at least anything he managed to get done now would save him time later to capture his little twin flame and drag him back to the penthouse again. It felt surprisingly empty without the photographer and Kalvin was already planning excuses to drag him back even just for an evening. He glanced over to the tablet that sat in the middle of his desk. It was how they were listening to the secure channel and it displ

Chapter 39 - Bad Blood
Aian pulled up on his scooter outside the newspaper office he freelanced for. He was ready to drop off the photos he had taken the night before to his editor. If he was honest, he wasn't sure the photos and article would make it to print. Generally, politicians would bribe the paper to stop the press from running the article. There wasn’t enough evidence to take into the police to press charges, so the only thing the paper could do was slander the name and reputation of the person caught in the photos. It irked Aian to no end that taking the bribes was considered a legitimate source of income for some of the paper. It felt as shady as the people he caught in his viewfinder but he couldn't do anything until he had more concrete proof of misdeeds and corruption. He dithered over which photos to hand in for the good part of the night before finally giving in and calling Kalvin. It dug at his conscience; he was a photo jou

Chapter 40 - The Trio
“Yanyan!” Sam called enthusiastically and Aian smiled at the warm greeting. “Hey, guys, how’s it going?” “Good. It's nice to be able to have this catch up as normal and not worry about your safety when you can't show up,” Brent glanced over at the two guards grabbing takeaway coffees and moving to sit at one of the outside tables. “I'm guessing they are from the team you mentioned over email?” “Yeah,” Aian said then sighed. “I can't go anywhere without them. They generally stay outside if I'm going into a house or a small shop but if I go to the mall or supermarket, they come with me and it really feels like I'm being babysat.” “At least you're safe.” Aian pulled a face at his friend but only received a serious look in return. “I'm serious, Yanyan. Your job alone is enough to have scary people after you. We were pretty worried when you said you nearly got beaten up after you got that politician arrested. Fenell
