Chapter 11

HOPEI am pretty sure that flying with Nicco ruined flying for me for the rest of my life. I’ve never flown before, but I have heard horror stories about having to show up two hours before the flight, wait in line at security for an hour, have a pat down while your luggage rummaged through, and then run for a flight with little to no leg room, bad drinks and a seatmate that has body odor. We had none of that.Vinnie drove us down a private road and parked in front of a private terminal. He opened my door and then Nicco came around, taking my elbow. Vinnie handed the keys to a man who came up while another porter proceeded to unload the luggage from the back. We went into the private terminal where we were handed a glass of wine by the hostess of the lounge. We waited in comfortable, reclining chairs for about twenty minutes. Nicco pulled out his laptop and did some business while we waited, but I sat, looking out the window and holding my glass of wine. The hostess approached

Chapter 12

HOPE I lay back, limply, watching Nicco. He gave me a slow wink and then reached beside him, grabbing his laptop. I stifled a groan. I swear the man never relaxed. I stayed in the half-reclined position with my feet on Nicco’s lap and dozed off, waking when the flight attendant nudged me. I sat up, putting my seatbelt on over my now wrinkled dress. Nicco looked distracted; upset over something he saw on the computer. I wondered if I would be able to help but decided to ask him at a different time. The plane landed gently, with barely a bump. I was pleased, having envisioned a landing with a fiery stop at the end. I stood and tried to smooth the wrinkles out of my dress before following Nicco down the stairs. I slipped on the last step, but Nicco caught me. “Whoa. You okay?” he asked, setting me back on my feet. “Yes,” I lied, my ankle throbbing. I had turned it when I stepped and then put my weight on it. It was a stupid mistake. Nicco looked at me, shrewdly, and I p

Chapter 13

NICCO I settled Hope in the back passenger seat of the car and then took the seat directly in front of her, sitting next to the driver. I was very private and not many people knew where my personal residence was, so I anticipated having to provide directions. I also needed to make a few more phone calls. I didn’t want to find any surprises at my apartment. Angelica was surprise enough, and she was not a good surprise. Angelica was a mistake. She was beautiful and eager, the daughter of a Beta, and enjoyed partying. Five years ago, she would have been the perfect companion for me. I met her one night when I let my guard down and went back to my old stomping grounds, spending a night like I used to. I woke up in her bed and she had been hard to get rid of ever since. I called my Omega housekeeper, waking her. “Yes, Alpha?” she answered the phone, sounding drowsy. “Hello Eloise,” I said. “I’m sorry I woke you.” I was fond of her and liked having her around. “No probl

Chapter 14

HOPE Nicco put me down and all I could think about was leaving before the doctor got here. I knew that my fear was irrational, but it is impossible to reason with someone in the grips of terror like I was. I needed to leave. Nicco didn’t try to stop me, and I was grateful. My ankle hurt pretty bad, but after a few steps I could ignore most of the pain. I made it to the door and wrenched it open, heading into the hallway. Nicco still didn’t move. I turned to look back at him, sitting stoically on the couch with his arms folded. “I’m sorry,” I said, and the tears began to fall. I shut the door behind me and moved down the hall as quickly as I could. I turned the corner and thought I heard the door to the suite open, so I moved faster. I was an idiot for coming here. Relationships don’t work with me. I’m too damaged with too many monsters in my closet. My fear of doctors was a very small tip of the iceberg. I found the doorway to the stairwell and I entered that, pulling

Chapter 15

NICCO I rushed back into the hotel, ignoring the curious glances from the porters and the concierge. The doctor met me at the elevator. “Do you need me to accompany you?” he asked. “I hear we have a patient?” I hesitated. I really wanted her ankle to be looked at, but I wanted to respect her feelings. I shook my head, deciding to be honest with him. “She has a fear of doctors. I don’t know what it stems from, but it’s pretty intense. Let me get her settled. Perhaps come up in about twenty minutes?” The doctor nodded, stepping back and allowing me to enter the elevator. A porter joined me, using his key to bypass all the other floors, getting to mine. I tipped him and stepped out, heading to the suite. I let myself in. I could hear Vinnie talking soothingly to Hope in the bedroom. I stepped around the corner and stood in the doorframe. She had changed, dressed in hotel pajamas. She was so tall that the pants didn’t come down to her ankles, instead sitting like high wa

Chapter 16

NICCO I looked at Hope quietly. She was looking back at me with her big, blue eyes. I wanted to stay. I wanted to stay so badly, and my wolf wanted me to stay. But I walked to the head of the bed, leaned over and kissed her on the head. “Not tonight, sweet Hope,” I murmured. “Get some rest.” She looked at me, hurt, but I turned to leave, closing the door behind me. I was worried my resolve would break. It would have just taken one more word, one more look, and I would have abandoned my morals and ravaged her body tonight, marking her and making her my Luna. I looked up to see Vinnie staring at me. “She’s your mate,” he said, mildly. “If you mark her, she will heal faster.” I shook my head. “You know I can’t do that.” “Why not?” he asked. He acted like it was an easy decision. “You know why. She’s human.” I said this like it was excuse enough, but Vinnie was on Lupo’s side. “So what?” he said. “So, she’s human. She’s a good girl, smart and would be an excellent

Chapter 17

HOPE I wrapped my arms around Nicco’s neck and my legs around his waist. He carried me back into the bedroom and kicked the door shut behind him. It made a dull thumping noise. He carried me over to the bed and sat me on the edge. I reached down to pull my shirt up and off from me, but he batted my hand aside. “No,” he whispered. “I want to take my time.” I nodded, shivering at the lust in his voice. He bent down and took my head in one of his hands, tipping it back. His lips crashed down on mine, first gentle, then becoming more insistent. I opened my mouth a little and his tongue ran lightly over my lips and then teased the inside of my mouth. My eyes closed and I relaxed in his embrace. I felt him reach down for my shirt, pulling up the edge. He pulled back and I raised my hands, letting him pull the shirt up and off me in one smooth motion. I sat in front of Nicco in my little lacy bra that he bought for me yesterday, my breasts threatening to spill over the cups.

Chapter 18

HOPE I felt my heartrate spike and I felt a little dizzy. Nicco held me and whispered into my ear. “Breathe, Hope. It’s okay. We can take it slow.” His voice rumbled in his chest and I clung to him, letting the rumble soothe me. I put my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat. Mine slowed to match his. “Tell me the story, Hope,” Nicco said, his voice almost purring. I took a moment, then began speaking. “I got this scar the day I left. I had been beaten the night before by my stepdad and I was locked in the basement. That was usual. I heard the front door open, and heard a guy come in. I recognized his voice. It was a guy who liked to beat me. He liked it even more when I fought back. After a session with him, I was usually pretty bloody for a day or two.” I took a deep breath. This next part wasn’t pretty. “I knew my stepdad was going to come for me. A few days before this day I had stolen a steak knife from the kitchen and hid it in my things. When I hea

NICCOI froze. Hope said she was falling in love with me. I didn’t know what to do. My mind went blank.I wanted to tell her that she wasn’t really in love with me. That it was all the mate bond, wreaking havoc with her emotions. But I didn’t. Because I didn’t want to ruin anything.Truth was, I was falling for Hope, too, despite all of my misgivings. My wolf had no reservations; he was angry we didn’t mark her last night when we had the chance. I was still cautious, mostly because of two reasons. First, she was human. And second, she had no idea werewolves existed.I looked up at Hope who was blushing furiously. She looked away from me and I realized that she meant every word she said. She wasn’t taking it back. I gave her a slow smile.“You are?” I asked, letting a smile come across my face. She shyly nodded. “I am pretty sure I am,” she said. “I’m falling for you, too,” I admitted. Her gaze snapped back to my face, her eyes wide in shock and her mouth open in a lit

Chapter 20

HOPEI looked at Nicco. He looked intense and I didn’t know what was going on. I weighed my words.“If the adventure is with you, I’ll go anywhere,” I said.Nicco looked pleased. That was the right answer, somehow. He nodded, opening the bedroom door and walking out into the hall. “I’ve ordered some lunch to be sent up,” he said. “I hope you don’t mind.”I took the towel off my head and began blotting my hair. “Can we go out instead? If you’re too busy, I don’t mind going alone. I have never been to New York City before.”Nicco halted and turned back to look at me. “Hope, I’m sorry. But something has come up. We're going to leave very shortly and you can't leave the hotel. I promise to bring you back to New York City and give you the grand tour when it’s all over.”I didn’t like it. I was used to being able to go where I wanted, when I wanted to. And Nicco was back to being bossy. I didn’t say anything, just down the towel and picked up the comb, attacking the waywar
