Chapter 11
Cassie POV“Jessie!” I practically shouted, frustrated that the woman was obviously so busy with some guy that she didn't even hear me calling her name. I heard a rustling sound behind me and spun around to see Boss, his face partly obscured in the darkness.“Cassie? Aren't you meant to be attending to Mr. Costa's party?” he asked as he stepped closer.I don't know why I did it, but I stepped backward as if to get away from him. “Yeah, he asked me to get him a bottle of brandy and I forgot to ask which one he liked. I don't want to look like an idiot so I wanted to ask Jessie if she knew,” I embellished the truth slightly. “The guys said she came out here for a quick smoke, but I can't see her.”Boss shrugged and pulled out a box of cigarettes, putting one in his mouth before he lit it and crumpled up the now empty box. “Costa drinks d'Usse cognac,” he replied, taking a drag of his cigarette before he threw the empty box at the open dumpster. He missed miserably and it bounced off

Chapter 12
Cassie POV“Hey, can I give you a lift home?” Damian asked once he had cleared the club and asked the bouncers to guard the alley until the police team could collect evidence. I shook my head, “can't leave my bike here. I have my second job to get to tomorrow.”He looked at me quizzically but didn't ask further… and I wasn't going to volunteer the information. “Alright, then I'm going to follow you home to make sure you get there alright,” he announced, taking my backpack from me as we left the club. His hand rested on the small of my back and I could feel the intense heat of his palm through my shirt. It's something werewolves don't really notice, but their body temperature is definitely warmer than humans - great in Winter, but it must be awful to sleep next to one in the Summer. “Fine, you can follow me home,” I agreed somewhat begrudgingly. He smiled triumphantly and I pretended not to notice as he helped me put my jacket and backpack on. As my bike roared to life, Damian jum

Chapter 13
Cassie POVHave you ever had a dream so vivid that you were sure it was real, only to wake up and have this empty feeling when you realised it was just a dream? Well, I guess Vasilios's presence in my apartment triggered some subconscious thing in my brain, because I dreamed of my wedding… although, it wasn't the wedding I had experienced in reality. No, this was the type of fantasy thirteen year old me would have dreamed up.Pure white tulips decorated the dais in the middle of the packhouse garden where the entire pack waited with breathless anticipation of the happy event. Vasilios, handsome and proud as he stood at the bottom of the flower-bordered aisle waiting for me to glide effortlessly to his side in my over-the-top wedding dress. Yep, definitely something thirteen year old me would have dreamed up - in the days before the guy I loved cruelly stamped all over my heart and showed his true colours. I guess dreaming about him was better than dreaming about Jessie's lifeless co

Chapter 14
Cassie POVThere's something about exotic dancing that made me feel powerful in a way nothing else ever did. Maybe it was knowing that the men and women who watched were undeniably affected by me, or maybe it was that I felt sexy. Either way, it was an addicting feeling. And having Enzo sitting a couple feet away with his eyes wide as dinner plates and his mouth clenched shut probably was the highlight of my day. The longer he sat there, the more unsettled and nervous he became. His hands kept combing through his hair and he must have had at least five drinks by the time Amy came out of the dressing room to do our rehearsed “Crystal and Amethyst” duo. We had barely completed our second sequence of moves when Enzo swallowed his drink in one gulp, stood up and charged out of the door. It took all the strength I had in me not to burst into giggles at his hasty departure.“Who was the guy you were torturing?” Amy quizzed me as we returned to the change room. “And if that was Vasilios I'

Chapter 15
Vasilios POV I read the message from my father for the hundredth time, resisting the urge to snap my phone in half - but only barely. “Congratulations on finding Cassandra. I trust that you will have her back before the Full Moon Celebration,” the old man challenged me. “It would be a pity to pass the alpha title on to your cousin, but that will be the consequences. Don’t disappoint me.” Titan growled in my mind, the mere thought of losing his alpha status making him grumpy. “That won't happen, big guy. I promise,” I reassured the wolf, hoping that I wouldn't be made to eat my own words later on. Pouring myself a cup of strong coffee, I stepped out onto the balcony to watch the sun rise between the skyscrapers which New York City was famous for, and wondered how on earth I was going to progress with Cassandra if there was another man in the picture. And there was no doubt in my mind that the no-good smooth talker of a boss she had was interested in her. Sure, there was a mur

Chapter 16
Cassie POV“Crystal, private room in five minutes,” Mrs. Ho's grandson ordered as I climbed down from the stage, pointing with his thumb toward the private rooms. I shook my head, used to the guy's tricks. “You've read my contract. I will only do private dances for five grand.”I laughed and tried to brush past him but he caught my arm in a none too gentle grip and spun me to face the private rooms, his face coming close to my ear as he whispered harshly, “you should feel honoured that someone actually paid that ridiculous amount of money to see you, bitch.”With a shove, he pushed me toward the private rooms. “Who… who the hell paid the money?” I stammered, somewhat bewildered. The five grand stipulation was the only way I could negotiate my way out of the private dances in the first place. I never dreamed that some idiot would actually pay that much! “A guy with more money than brains,” came the simple response before he left me outside the door where the patron was waiting for

Cassie POVI texted Mrs. Ho the next morning, telling her I was too ill to work my Friday afternoon shift. It wasn't an outright lie - the mere thought of potentially running into Vasilios at the club again was enough to make me nauseous. I couldn't get out of working at the nightclub, though. And with Jessie's death, the bar was definitely going to be short staffed. “Hey Greg,” I smiled at the guy as he opened the door to let me in. “Hey Cassie,” he said rather sadly, his eyes downcast. I stopped in my tracks and put my hand on his arm. “What's wrong? You don't sound like yourself tonight.”He shrugged and avoided my gaze so I grabbed him by his hand and pulled him into one of her booths, sitting opposite him. “Spill. We've been friends for two years and you can trust me with whatever is bothering you,” I told him honestly. He sniffed and wiped his eyes with the back of his sleeve. “I'm just so fucking stupid, Cass!” Greg burst out with a groan.I sighed and took his hand in

Cassie POV“We are gathered here today to bear witness to, and celebrate the life of Jessica Lee Parker,” the priest called out to the sombre congregation.Greg, Terry, Benny and I sat in the back pew of the small church. My eyes seemed to be glued on Jessie's family who sat in the front row, her mother openly sobbing. My heart broke for the woman, and yet I also wondered what it would be like to have a mother who actually loved you the way Jessie's mom loved her. I sometimes wished I hadn’t been abandoned by my mother - and wondered how I would have turned out if I had been raised by her. Although, she seemed to be weak-spirited and I would have probably turned into the kind of girl who faints the moment a creepy guy greets her. Like last night at the club when Gerald decided to take his stalking to the next level and pop up at the club. Instead of me ignoring his presence and pretending that I didn’t know him until he walked away confused, I would have probably screamed my head of

Cassie POVThe police were at the club when I arrived, talking in serious voices to Damian who looked exhausted. “I told your colleagues already,” I heard him say clearly, “the cameras on that side of the club stopped working a few days before Jessie was murdered. I was planning on getting a technician out, but it wasn't on my priority list because I wasn't expecting something like that to happen.”The short and scrawny officer, who somewhat resembled a Jack Russell in his approach, immediately countered Damian's explanation. “Oh, so you're saying you didn't bother to have the cameras changed even though they suspiciously all stopped working at the same time. Rather convenient, isn't it?”Damian sighed loudly and threw his hands up in the air. “Listen, if you want to arrest me, then do it. I was in a private meeting the whole evening, and Cassie over there is my witness, along with seven of my business associates. The only time I left the room was when I was alerted to the discover

Cassie POVWho would have thought that my casual, “yeah, I could eat” response would end with me at Damian’s impressive home… but there I was, sitting on the velvet sofa on the terrace which overlooked the city. “This place is incredible,” I told Damian as he passed me a glass of red wine and sat down beside me. “I know,” he laughed. “I was drawn to it the first time I saw this place when I was just a teenager. I promised myself back then that I would work my backside off to own something similar - and then proceeded to do just that.” “Wow,” I whispered over my wine glass. “How on earth did you make it happen? I feel like no matter what I do in this blasted city, I only ever just make enough to survive. But you! You’ve definitely made something of yourself.”He shrugged, “I didn’t have much choice. I ran away from my pack when I was fifteen - the year before my wolf made himself known. As much as it pained him to not be part of a pack, he understood my reasons and he has been a majo
