Sara's POVEmma's eyes locked onto mine. "I mean your memories. They're not quite right, are they?"A wave of panic washed over me. How the hell did Emma know?"What do you mean," I deflected.Emma got all serious, her face. "Sara, I think that you could be in danger, but I also think it's time we discovered the truth about who you are."My world began spiraling out of control. What did Emma know? Even more concerning, what did she mean by "the truth about who I am?""Find a quiet place to talk," Emma said, pulling me toward a nearby bench.I simply nodded, following her to the place where we would sit. What secrets was Emma about to reveal now? And how would they change everything?Emma flitted her eyes around, only casting a look on us now and then as if apprehensive that we were being watched. "I think we need to be very careful," she said in a low, serious voice. "I don't know what's going on, but I think we're in over our heads."My spine had just had the chill of it. Just what t

From Sara's POVEmma helped me out of the chair; her eyes traveled over my face. "We have to get you repolished," she said firmly. "All your makeup is gone, and you look like you've been through a war."I nodded, a little groggy. Encounters with Vincent and Jethro had buoyed me out of a daze.Emma took my arm, marching me through the crowd. She nodded at a few as we walked along until we reached the ladies' room. Emma threw open the door, pushing me inside. It was a cool, quiet space taken away from the noise and chaos of the gala. Emma sat me down in front of the mirror and then began digging around inside her clutch."Where is your makeup bag?" she asked, her eyes scouring the room.I shook my head. "I don't have one with me. I just didn't think I was going to need it."Emma nodded. "It's okay. I have everything we need in here. She started in on fixing my makeup fingers flying, deft, putting mine to shame in their talent alone. I watched in awe as she turned me from a tear-soaked m

Sara's POVI stood rooted to the spot, completely immobile, watching Tunisha and Jethro gaze into each other's eyes. I felt like an outsider, a mere spectator to their twisted game.Tunisha turned towards me, her eyes squinted in scorn to include my astounded face. "I presume," she said, rather condescendingly, "that this must be Sara"."How did you.?" I was starting the question when Tunisha cut me."Oops, Sara, the great intruder," she added on a note of scorn. "I have heard so much about you."I could feel anger flaring up inside me. "What do you want, Tunisha," I demanded, trying to keep it cool. She smiled; malice was shining in those eyes. "I wanted to meet the woman who will dare to steal Jethro's heart," she said dripping with sugar, then smirked. "It doesn't look like you can handle it."My body was covered with perspiration, and her words stung me like a poisonous jellyfish, yet I didn't dare to back down. "I don't know what you're talking about," I said in defense, trying

Instant irritation flared with the interruption and wanted to rage, but the grip on my wrist from Tunisha was strong. I knew what she meant, but I hesitated. Since when do I listen to her? I opened my mouth to answer, but Tunisha's grin widened, reaching her eyes. "The Elders are waiting, Jethro," she reminded me, her voice firm but gentle in tone. "Your destiny is calling. Don't be swayed it by. things which do not matter."With her words, I plunged into guilt, but Tunisha was holding my wrist in a vice. I knew I was to go with her and find out what the Elders wanted. I cast one last look at Sara, who had been carried out of the room by the stranger, before turning to follow Tunisha. She tugged on my wrist as Tunisha led me through many long and winding halls, stopping at a very ornate door. She just set her fingers on the handle and opened it casually. The room was ill-lit on the inside; it was hardly sufficient to look at as only a few candles were flickering to light up the space

That got her to calm down a bit so that she laughed a little. "Yeah, that does sound like a good idea. I don't feel like dealing with any more of their shenanigans right now."I smiled, glad she took it well. "Good, you can stay right here for as long as you need to. Henry is such a cool guy, his house is fancy."Sara got her gaze to roam across the room to catch the full picture of opulent decorations. "Definitely. It feels like I'm in a different world or something."All I could do was nod in agreement. "You are very far at least for now away from your family's problems."We had barely started arguing our points in dialogue when the knock at the door lapsed into momentary silence. Both of us turned toward the door; we had temporarily dropped the thread of our dialogue. We both froze up at once and uttered not a word as we awaited to identify who was to enter. A soft voice came through the door excitedly: "Mrs. Jenkins, housemaid; some refreshments of tea and snacks for the ladies."
