Kayla's POVI stared at him, unable to wrap my head around it, someone was playing a sick game and it wasn't funny. “You’re lying,” I accused, the words slipping out before I could stop them. “You have to be.”The King’s eyes narrowed, his face scrunching up in annoyance. “Kayla, I have no reason to lie to you. Why will I send a teddy bear? The man beside him laughed abruptly but then pretended he was coughing, failing miserably to hide his amusement.“Maybe you're the one lying” The King returned, making me blink back in astonishment.“Yes, I can barely walk around these walls, yet somehow, I found the time and money to buy a giant teddy bear and have your staff prepare a dinner so I can accuse you because I have nothing else to do” I uttered sarcastically my hands gesticulating wildly before dropping by my sides.“Show me this teddy bear and letter you’re talking about.” the king said, a ghost of a smile on his lips,I couldn't tell if he was toying with me or he seriously had no cl

Kayla's POVThe night did go terrible after all. Nice going Kayla, you could have just kept quiet. But I couldn't help but wonder, why was the topic so sensitive? Who was she, and why did just the mention of her make him so furious?I pushed the plate away, my appetite gone. I left the dining room and made my way to my bedroom. As I entered my room, I let out a sigh, then I changed out of the dress I’d worn for the dinner.Slipping into bed, I hoped sleep would bring some peace. Sleep didn’t come easily, but eventually, I drifted off, the questions still swirling in my mind. The next morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains, waking me gently. I sat up, rubbing my eyes as I tried to shake off the remnants of the night’s uneasy thoughts. There was a knock at the door, and Azel stepped in, carrying a tray with breakfast.“Good morning,” she said, placing the tray on the small table by the window.“Morning,” I replied, my voice still groggy from sleep.Azel began arranging the dish

KLAUS’ (THE LYCAN KING) POV Kayla Kayla! KAYLA!! I huffed frustrated tossing some papers off my desks, I could swear my head would have exploded if I thought about her any longer, which wasn't doing me any good as I stared at the workload piling at my desk. No one had such a hold on me, I had kept my feelings at bay since… hmph! I sighed, running a frustrated hand through my ruffled hair. How did she manage to break through my defenses? Right from when I set my eyes on her, she had made my dead heart beat again. Was it good or bad? I had no idea. It had been one rollercoaster ride to another since she came by which goes to show how boring my life had become. I felt guilty leaving her alone last night, storming out in a fit of anger that now seemed foolish. I knew I shouldn’t have done it. It wasn’t her fault, after all. My hand hovered over the pen, but I couldn’t bring myself to focus. She must think I was a monster, leaving her like that without so much as a word. With an

Kayla's POVMy heart plummeted in my chest so hard it felt like it would rip out my chest. I had never seen him so mad, his eyes… the heat of his aura literally caused goosebumps to flare on my skin.Knock knock!“Ah!” I screamed jerking up from my bed I was sitting on, the sound came again, I gulped hard thinking it was the King but then a feminine voice came through, it was Azel.I sighed out in relief, palming my temples to clean the sweat that had formed there.“Come in” I called out.Azel stepped in carrying a tray with lunch. The door creaked open, and Azel stepped in, balancing a tray with my meal. I returned to the edge of my bed, my fingers tapping against the sheets.“Lunch is ready, my lady. You should eat something.” she added, noticing I was distant.I glanced at the tray but shook my head. “I can’t, Azel. I’m not hungry.”Azel frowned. “You need your strength, your baby.”I stood up, pacing the room. “Azel, do you know where Kain is?” I blurted before I could stop the wor

Kayla's POVFirst mate?“Yes my brother had a first mate” I didn't realize I had said that first part out loud till Kain responded.“I know everything that transpired, plus one secret that might change your views on what type of person he is, a secret that might save your life all for a deal” he whispered fanning the flames of my curiosity.“What kind of deal?” I asked, my voice quieter than I intended. There was no backing out now. I needed to hear what he had to say, no matter how much I hated it.Kain leaned against the wall, crossing his arms, eyes dancing with amusement. “I know all about your little situation back at home. Your stepfamily, how they treated you like dirt. How you were practically a slave in your own house.”My throat tightened, my eyes widened in shock, how did he know?“No need to act surprised, I did a background check on you, Kayla,” he continued casually, like we were discussing the weather. “Found out some interesting things. Not a life you would want to ret

Kayla's POV“Where did you go Kayla? And what the hell are you wearing?!” The King yelled in frustration.I blinked, my heart racing. The maid’s outfit I had borrowed from Azel suddenly felt too tight. “I— I just wanted to help. You know, do something useful…” My voice wavered, but I forced myself to keep talking, trying to sound casual, like this wasn’t a big deal.He narrowed his eyes, stepping closer, towering over me. “Help?” His tone was laced with disbelief. “Is this your idea of helping, Kayla? Dressing up as a maid and sneaking around the palace after I’ve told you, I warned you, time and time again, to stay out of trouble?”“I wasn’t sneaking around!” I shot back, but it sounded weak, even to me. I clenched my fists at my sides, trying to stay calm. “I just… I was curious to know how it was to be a maid.”“Curious?” His voice rose, the frustration clear now. “Ignoring me? Going against my rules, you think this is a game?”I opened my mouth to argue, to say something —anythin

Kayla's POV “Here's the plan. I'll get you out of your room and you make your way into the King's room, get the file, and step out, easy peasy” Kain explained like he was talking about the weather and not some bizarre escape mission to steal from THE LYCAN KING! “Why will the guards let me in the room?” I questioned nervously. He smirked, like the answer was obvious. “Because you’re the Luna. Or, at least, everyone thinks you are. Nobody’s going to question you going into his room. They’ll assume you’re there on his command” “What if something goes wrong?” I urged, twisting my fingers on my laps, my anxiety growing. “You don't worry about that Kayla” Kain said, stepping closer, lowering his voice as if someone might be listening. “It’s very simple, you'll be fine. It’s either you do this or remain locked here” No… I was sick of sitting here waiting for the King despite the nerves I felt, it would be better to take this chance than sit here regretting it. “I'll do it” I muttered

Kayla's POV“Listen to me… the reports are fake, they are not true, Lily did something, I'm sure of it” I pleaded desperately, watching as the King's eyes darkened, his jaw tightened then a sharp snap echoed through the room, a sound that sent a chill down my spine.I stepped back watching the King winced in pain, his eyes flared with anger, a wild glint taking over.“Leave here now, Kayla!” he growled, I understood his reaction. It was one I had experienced once myself, he was losing control, he was about to turn.“I would do as he says if I were you” Lily spoke up, the fear in her eyes matched mine. At least his anger wasn't directed towards her, I was terrified! His aura filled the room as he began growling, his tone inhumane, falling on all fours.I had to leave… no I had to run before he tore me apart in shreds without thinking, I rushed around him bolting from the room. My feet moved faster than my thoughts, carrying me through the hallways as the tears stung at my eyes. I didn’

Kayla's POVQuietly the King turned around, walking out as abruptly as he came, my eyes trailing after him watching in disbelief.I turned to Azel flabbergasted, without thinking, I threw my arms around her in a hug, the joy bursting out of me before I could stop it. “I’m staying, Azel! I’m not leaving!” the words tumbled out in a rush, almost breathless.Azel froze for a moment, and I could feel her hesitation. Slowly, she hugged me back, but it was brief, almost hesitant. She stepped away quickly, her hands smoothing her apron. “I’m glad you’re staying, Lady Kayla,” she said.I grabbed her arm before she could slip away fully. “Azel, don’t do that. You don’t have to act like I'm your boss, not anymore.” I pulled her back into a hug, tighter this time, holding her close. “You’ve been more than just a maid to me. You’re my friend.”Her body softened against mine, and I felt her shoulders shake slightly, as if she had been holding her breath for days. She finally let herself relax, hug

KLAUS' POV “Alpha, we await your orders” one of the guards voiced as they closed in on Kayla, about to arrest her. “You have to believe me, you know I would not do something like this” Kayla begged, her eyes yearning for me to believe her. I couldn’t answer her, not yet. Not when I didn’t know the truth. I clenched my fists, my jaw tightening. Nothing made sense anymore. The emerald— how did it end up in her room? She couldn’t have done it… or could she? I raised my hand, stopping the guards from dragging her away for just a moment. My eyes locked on hers, searching for something, an answer, a sign, anything. But all I saw was fear and hurt, and it twisted something inside of me. “Keep her room in the room,” I finally ordered, my voice harsher than I intended. “She’s pregnant. For the sake of her baby, lock her in here.” The moment the words left my mouth, I regretted them, but I couldn’t take them back. I turned on my heel then walked away despite her protests. My heart pounded
