BEN POV Maybe I had reached my breaking point this time around. The news about my adoption seemed to be making matters worse, and for a split second, I almost thought I had lost my damn mind. My grandfather’s words still cut deep, and they kept repeating over and over in my head until I had reached the peak of insanity. I sighed deeply and pulled out my phone. I wanted answers from my so-called mother, but I didn’t mean to be ungrateful; after all, they raised me and gave me this life. Nevertheless, it felt like I was never their daughter but just a charity case. Fuck it. I was going to do it. I was done playing safe. I dialed her number, and she picked up on the third ring. “Benedykta?” I smiled to myself. How could she pretend for so long? She was acting like a saint, blackmailing me to help my dad pay back the debt if I married Nolan, but little did I know that every single action was for their personal gain. I was nothing but a mere puppet in their game.

BEN POV I slowly open my eyes, and the room is pitch black. The last memories come rushing back to me like floods consuming me. It was a setup. That woman and the baby were only there to distract me so that I could get away from the public eye. Luring me to the bathroom was the only way to get me alone. I already knew the person behind this attack, and it was none other than my crazy ex-boyfriend. My throat feels dry, and I feel like the walls are closing in on me. “Zane?” I call out in the darkness, and my voice only seems to echo in the vast room. Shit. I needed to keep calm for the baby’s sake; if Zane notices that I’m freaking out, it will be the end of the world, and I would never be able to forgive myself if something happened to the baby. “Please, can we just talk?” I whisper tiredly. Tears fill my eyes because, deep down, no one will be able to come to my rescue. The lights suddenly turn on, and my gaze lingers around the room. It was some sort of wareh

AMBROSE POVTWENTY MINUTES EARLIER Nolan and I were still parked outside the entrance of the warehouse, and I could still feel the unresolved tension between us.I hated feeling this way, and by all means, I wanted things to go back to normal between us. “Nolan.” He turned to look at me, and the hatred in his eyes was evident. “If anything happens to me in there, and if I don’t come back alive, I want you to take care of Ben, the company, and the vineyard.” He didn’t make a comment. “Many years ago, before I met your mother, I was in the Italian mafia, and it was something that has always been part of my family. So even if I wanted to go a different path in life, its existence will always haunt me. But everything changed when I met your mother.” I smiled to myself as I remembered the day I met Katherine. “She was just a tourist, and she was so excited to visit Italy. When I saw her for the first time, I knew that I had to leave the mafia behind if I was going to be wit

NOLAN POV Clay had informed me that Ben was awake, though she wanted to see what was left of Ambrose, and I didn’t want her to see him in such a discomposed state. But of course, she was Benedykta Rebel; she was going to insist, even though she wasn’t physically fit to be here in the first place. I sighed deeply. The warehouse was surrounded by the police and medical personnel who were here to gather what was left of my father and Zane. A few minutes later, a stretcher was brought outside, and on it lay what looked like a skeleton. Uncle Matteo placed a hand on my shoulder and urged me to inspect the remains. “They only found one body and a human skull… Nolan, if Zane was strapped to the bomb, then the explosion was huge enough to burn him to ashes, and through DNA testing, the results came out positive from the skull; it indeed belongs to Zane.” I nodded quietly. “It means that this body belongs to my father.” The words felt bitter coming out of my mouth. Ever sinc

BEN POV The villa was quiet when we returned from the lake. The kind of quiet that wrapped around your limbs and made it hard to move. Everyone dispersed without saying much—Clay disappearing to his room with red eyes and a crumpled tissue in hand, Marcelo claiming the couch with his hoodie pulled over his head, and Nolan… well, Nolan lingered like a ghost in the hallway.I closed my bedroom door behind me and leaned against it, letting the silence stretch. The ceremony had been beautiful in its own way, but nothing about it felt real. I kept expecting Ambrose to walk through the trees, his usual smirk tugging at his lips, saying something sarcastic to break the tension. But all I had was the urn, now empty, and the wind, which had carried the last of him into the lake.I sat on the edge of the bed and buried my face in my hands. My palms came away damp with tears I hadn’t realized I was shedding.I couldn’t keep doing this. Pretending like I was okay. Pretending like breathing didn
