“Kael?” The whisper was so faint Kael thought he imagined it. He jolted upright from the chair he’d been sitting in for hours, eyes snapping to Alessia. Her fingers twitched weakly in his grasp. Her eyelashes fluttered. A soft breath escaped her lips. “Alessia?” Kael leaned forward, voice low but urgent. “Alessia, can you hear me?” Her eyelids trembled, and then slowly they opened. Her silver irises, soft, dazed, but alive. Kael’s heart clenched painfully. She blinked, trying to adjust to the gentle golden glow of the Healers’ Wing. Her gaze floated, unfocused, before finally landing on him. “Kael…” Her voice was hoarse, barely audible. “You stayed.” His breath left him. “Of course.” The door burst open with a loud crash. “Princess, Are you awake? Oh’ lights above!” Seraphine cried, nearly tripping over the rug as Eryx grabbed her by the collar. “Calm down, Seraphine.
