Chapter 21

Marissa's Pov “He was so sweet and charming. We did the shopping together and he got along really well with Ashlynn.” " Well that's not hard. Ashlynn gets along with everybody. Marissa's Pov My breath comes fast. My heartbeat frantic. I'm running again. This time in heels. I catch a reflection of myself in the mirrors lining the hallway as I run past. I'm in a powder blue ball gown and gold heels, hair held up in an elaborate bun, my cheeks rosy pink with blush. I gasp at the image but I don't stop running, platform heels clacking rapidly against the thin carpet. I reach the top of a grand staircase, the type seen only in movies, and without a moment's hesitation, I begin to run down. I'm almost to the bottom when I place a foot wrong. My arms spread out l, grabbing for something, anything to regain my balance. But the bannisters suddenly seem so far away and I'm tumbling the last few steps, the green carpet rushing up to meet my face. Marissa's Pov This day couldn't possibly get any worse right? Nightmares, headaches, Jack being shady. A nice trifecta. When my phone rang two minutes into my lunch break, a part of me already knew it wasn't something good. One glance at the caller ID and the feeling was confirmed. It was the twins kindergarten teacher. I groaned in equal parts frustration and anxiety. I hoped no one had fallen ill. “Hello Mrs Day." I answered as sweetly as I could manage. “Hello Miss Thorne. Marissa's Pov “Can you see his arm?" The red faced woman said immediately I opened the door. I suspected she'd had her ear pressed to it though and launching into a tirade was a way for her to cover that. I might be wrong. And I was tired. Whatever burst of anger that had struck in the office left me weary all of a sudden. “Mrs Clarkson,I'm so sorry this happened….." “Sorry? You're sorry?" Marissa “What? What are you talking about?" He asked, “No you're not. Who the hell said you were.?" “I am. The Clarkson's think so and I mean who can blame them when…..” " Jeez Rissa slow down. Elias Asher was sullen for most of the evening. I didn't try cheering him up. I was feeling pretty sullen myself. He offered me the plate of crudely cut hot dogs. He still wasn't talking much, but that was expected. I hadn't scolded him. Not exactly. I'd just talked to him. I remembered Zayne's mom giving childhood recounts of him as a child. How she figured simply talking and making him see reason worked better than yelling or punishments. I'd told Marissa this, of course, and she was trying her best. The kid just needed a firmer voice. It should be Zayne doing this. Talking to his son, managing his aggression. But he made his choice years ago, and now he wanted to waltz in like the past six years didn't happen. I grunted low in my throat as I tossed the veggies. I shouldn't be thinking that. Marissa wasn't mine. If Zayne wanted to get his wife back, he had every right to. Zayne had made reservations at Malory's, the fanciest restaurant in all of Hallowden. Which wasn't saying much really. Fancy restaurants weren't a thing here. Dates were usually conducted at local bars, the park or diners. Eating at Malory's usually signified a big occasion. Elias had brought Bree and I here to celebrate my new job at the printing company about three years ago. The restaurant didn't look much different from local diners if I were being really honest. It made up for that in food and the general ambience, oh and the manger coming to check on you every twenty minutes or thereabouts and dropping not so casual facts about the decor. Marissa “ I Stayed awake just to hear all about it so spill!" Bree giggled over the phone. I giggled along with her as I told her everything I could about the night. Except the fainting part. It didn't seem necessary to get her worried about me for now. Besides, it might put a drag on the atmosphere. If I wasn't giddy over my date before, hearing Bree squeal over every detail would've set me off for sure. She was a little piffed she didn't get to see my outfit but hearing Zayne loved it, she didn't mind. " Did you kiss? Tell me you kissed?” " It was a first date, of course we didn't.” I said, remembering Zayne leaning in right before I fainted. Elias I made sure Marissa didn't see me when she got back. I let myself out of the house quietly while she got on the phone with Bree. She would think I tucked the kids into bed and left earlier. There wasn't any good enough reason for doing this. I just couldn't stand to hear about the date just yet. She'd want to tell me about it and I'd have to act interested or she'd think something was wrong. And I couldn't let her think something was wrong. Because nothing was wrong. I was fine dammit. Perfectly fine with Zayne trying to win her back. Uncomfortable? Yes. Worried? Sure. Jealous? Not a chance. She'd been his first. She always would be. I took a walk to clear my head, keeping my senses on the lookout for the rogue. I intended to get a room for the night at the inn and then tell Zayne about the rogue the next day. Probably needed to tell him tonight but again, he'd want to talk about the date. And if I had to choose, I'd rather listen to Marissa talk about it than him.

Chapter 30

Marissa Ashlynn stayed home with Miss Quincey. It broke my heart leaving her while I went to work but I trusted Miss Quincey to take care of her better than I would. For one thing, she was more grounded and calm under pressure. I was very likely to get flustered and cry along with my baby because I couldn't take her pain away. “Don't you worry about a thing. I've handled countless fever spikes over the years. A bowl of chicken noodle soup, some painkillers and a lot of sleep, she'll be right as rain before nightfall.” Miss Quincey said with a soothing pat on my back as she ushered me out of the house. Asher was staying behind too but I wasn't worried about him being any trouble. She promised to let me know if things got worse and I took her word for it. The work day seemed to crawl slowly.
