I wake up to the early morning sun as I roll onto my side to make it the bathroom quickly. Normally, I’d admire the beautiful rays dancing on the stone windowsill but one of the boys was bouncing on my bladder. It isn’t until after I use the bathroom and return to bed that I realize Leo isn’t there. I feel my breath catch in my throat as I scan the room for him. I know he was here last night. The pleasure I felt couldn’t have been a dream. What if I made him weaker? Just as I sit down to panic, Leo opens the bedroom door and enters casually.“Good morning, I was just coming to wake you - Are you okay?” He shifts between happy and concerned as he sees my face.“I thought something happened to you.” I huff and point at him and then place my hand over my heart.“Claire, I’m fine. I feel a lot better after last night.” He winks as he makes his way to me and kisses my forehead. “I was just downstairs filling out your patient packet for your procedure today and drinking coffee.” His reassur

They waited twenty four hours before moving me to a residency room. It looked just like the last with the exception of more surveillance. Was there surveillance in the padded room? Damn it.“This room suites you. It is empty just like your soul.” My mother says as she wanders the small room from wall to wall.“Oh goodie, I get to share it with you.” I roll my eyes as I sit down on the bed. I hear a knock at the door and watch as the nurse enters.“Charlotte, it’s time for breakfast.” I see that she’s pulling carts stacked with food trays as she put one down gently on the desk fastened to the wall in my room. I wait for her to leave before inspecting the tray to find avocado toast, bacon and a boiled egg. “At least the food here is edible.” I scoff as I bring the tray to my bed.“I’m sure you’ll find the food in prison just as delectable.” She smirks as I take a bite of my toast.“You really don’t ever shut up. A pity if you ask me.” I say without so much as turning a glance her way.

I’m just entering the office and still on cloud nine after my date with Jasmine last night when I’m given a frantic call from the psychiatric facility. “Hello, this is Chief Commissioner Mason.” “We need help! A patient was attacked during an unauthorized visit. She’s being transported to receive medical attention as we speak.” The lady says quickly as though there were a fire set ablaze. Wait, she doesn’t mean - no she couldn’t. She wasn’t allowed any visitors. “What the patients’ name?” I ask quickly as I motion for an officer to follow me to my office. “Charlotte.” I look at the phone in horror as I process what I’d just heard. “I’ll have officers there soon.” I say as I hang up. “I need you to get a fellow officer and head to the psychiatric facility. There was an attack. I need you interrogated the staff and get the video surveillance. He nods before rushing out of my office. I think to call Leo and Claire but I remember Claire being scheduled for surgery today and didn’t w

I sit in silence, cuffed to my bed with stinging pain. My finger had been cut off and my face sliced by Leo’s girlfriend. It was pathetic of me to have let my guard down. I knew better than to get too comfortable. I vow to kill her slowly and painfully if the opportunity ever presents itself and it will have nothing to do with Leo. I watch the Chief Commissioner closely. He sits, watching me and looking at my injuries. But I maintain my silence. Maybe this was a form of cruel punishment for every woman I’d harmed for Leo’s attention. It was malicious, there was no doubt about that but maybe it was my fault as much as it was brutal. I shake the idea loose. This was not the time for self-reflection. I’d been attacked brutally - there would be no justification. I distract myself by watching Mason leave the room to make a call. I try to make out who it is that he’s speaking with but I’m unable to hear and with my current handcuff linking me to the bed, I was unable to snoop effectively.

Leo makes it back just in time for my discharge from the recovery ward. I was excited to share the news with him until I noticed his demeanor. He was lost in thought and that couldn’t be a good thing. Elena must’ve noticed too, as she tries to distract me.“Is everything okay?” I ask carefully as I’m transferred to a wheelchair to be discharged and brought down to the lobby.“Yeah, we’ll talk about this later. Let’s just focus on getting you home.” I nod in agreement though I felt uneasy. He had gone to see Charlotte and he came back somber and pensive. The drive home was silent. Arthur never spoke but Elena, Leo nor I said one word until we reached Leo’s house.“Home sweet home.” Leo says as though those three words were enough to lighten the mood. He assists me inside and I’m surprised to see Jasmine and Nathan are sitting on the couch with wishful balloons.“Hey, when did you guys get here?” They both smile back at me as they answer.“Elena gave us her key so we could congratulate
