ADELINE'S POV "The doctors in Switzerland said you do." "What doctors?" "I called and spoke to them. They said you're having psychological problems." I felt betrayed. The doctors had talked to Blake about my private medical information. "Blake, I'm fine." "You're not fine. You think we have a baby. You think people are trying to hurt you." "Maybe they are." "Who, Adeline? Who is trying to hurt you?" I almost said Rebecca and Patricia. But Blake was Rebecca's boyfriend. He might still be protecting her. "I don't know," I said instead. "This is why you need help. You're scared of invisible enemies." "They're not invisible." "Then who are they?" I couldn't answer. Because I wasn't sure anymore. "Adeline, I want you to come home."

ADELINE'S POV I started writing: My dearest Hope, If you're reading this, it means something happened to me. I want you to know that I love you more than anything in the world. I found out about you and my cancer on the same day. The doctors told me I had to choose between treating the cancer and keeping you safe. I chose you. Some people might think that was stupid. They might say I should have chosen the treatment. But you are my miracle baby, Hope. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. Your father, Blake, is not a good man. He hurt me many times. He would hurt you too if he could find us. That's why Uncle Matthew and I came to Canada. To keep you safe. I hope I get to raise you and teach you everything I know. I hope I get to see you grow up and become an amazing woman. But if I can't, I want you to stay with Uncle Matthe

ADELINE'S POV I woke up rubbing my hand on my head. Everything hurts. My body felt heavy like someone had put rocks on my chest. "Ma'am, you're awake." I opened my eyes slowly. A nurse was standing next to my bed. But it wasn't Patricia. This was a different woman. She had gray hair and kind eyes. "Why am I in the hospital?" I asked. My voice sounded weak. "Your neighbor brought you here. You collapsed in your apartment hallway." I tried to remember what happened. The plane. Patricia. The syringe. But everything was blurry. "What day is it?" I asked. "Thursday, October third." October third? That didn't make sense. The last thing I remembered was September. "How long have I been here?" "Three days. You've been unconscious for three days. I looked around the room. This wasn't

ADELINE'S POV "She called Dr. Harrison?" "Yes. At 3:17 AM. They talked for four minutes." "What did they talk about?" "I don't know. We're trying to get a warrant for the phone records." "But if Patricia was working for Blake, why would she call Dr. Harrison?" "That's what we're trying to figure out." I thanked Detective Morrison and hung up. My hands were shaking. Dr. Harrison had lied to me. He said he didn't know anything about the kidnapping until Matthew called him. But Patricia had called him. They talked for four minutes. What did they talk about? The door opened and the nurse came back in. "Did you make your call?" she asked. "Yes. Thank you." I handed her back the phone. "Are you okay, dear? You look pale." "I'm fine. Can

ADELINE'S POV I sat in the bathtub, the warm water surrounding me like a cocoon. But I didn't feel safe. I didn't feel warm. I felt trapped. This was Blake's house. Blake's bathroom. Blake's bathtub. I was back in hell. I looked down at my stomach. It was still round. Still big. Hope was still inside me, moving and kicking like she knew something was wrong. "I'm sorry, baby," I whispered. "I tried to protect you." The water was getting cold. I had been sitting here for over an hour, trying to remember how I got here. Patricia had drugged me. That much I remembered. But what happened after that? I remembered waking up in this bedroom. Blake's bedroom. The sheets smelled like his expensive cologne. The walls were the same dark gray color he always liked. I remembered trying to get up, but my body was too heavy. Too weak.
