CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

DEREKNate’s party is tonight and the door is unlocked for me to step out – only to attend the party. The truth is, I don’t want to. I could either stay in and sleep, waiting for my next meal, or go out but walk away from the party. Go into the woods or my garage, anywhere I can get a clear head and think of what to do next. From my window, I can see the crowd gathering, most of them with cups in their hands. Alcohol, I assume. I haven’t been to any of these parties in years. CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO

ISABEL This is no longer a sensation. This is real. Gabriel is not taking me home and I don’t know where he is taking me. We are deep in the woods and and my fight or flight instinct is starting to kick in. Suddenly, I pause and snatch my hand out of his grip. “Where are you taking me, Gabriel?” I ask in a loud voice. “I’m taking you home!” He snaps, but I’m not having it. “No! You are taking me elsewhere, and if you don’t tell me where right now, there will be trouble.” “What are you going to do?” His voice is suddenly chill and scary, and I almost recoil but something strange in me keeps me feet solid on the ground. I feel a surge of power that I have never felt before. DEREKONE YEAR LATER “Give me one good reason why I should leave my territory and go with you to the immigrant territory.” Standing in the middle of my living room in the penthouse, hands on hips, I watch as Nate takes a big bite of his peanut butter and jelly sandwich while sitting on the couch, nodding his head as he chews until he swallows the last bit in his mouth. Then, he gulps his glass of orange juice and belches. I roll my eyes. “Because I want you to,” he says, swishing his tongue behind his upper lip. “Remind me of your purpose there again.” “To have some fun.” He rises to his feet, dragging his hands down his thighs. “Let’s see how famous we are in that territory. It will only take a day and we’ll be on the road the next. Also, you get to drive any of your fancy cars.” “Who’s going to be in charge while I’m gone?” I ask. CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

ISABEL Warm rays of the evening sun brush my skin as I pack the clothes washed earlier, only a few of which are mine. Inhaling a lungful of air, I keep it there for a while, grateful for the endless peace and protection that I’ve found since I ran into the immigrant territory about a year ago. I love it here. A lot has changed since I left – since I got here. I don’t want to talk about my past, at least not the events that led me here. Even though a part of my past has now become a huge part of me that I can’t let go of. “Isabel, I told you to stay inside and not work yourself up.” I turn around to find Irene staring at me with displeasure, hands on her hips. DEREK Shortly after Nate and I get into the immigrant territory late in the night, our car breaks down, in the middle of No-fucking-where, surrounded by bushes with no house in sight. And it’s all Nate’s fault. “I told you taking this car was a bad idea. Coming here in the first place was a bad idea,” I say, staring into the bonnet of the car. There isn’t anything particularly wrong with the car, I just had a feeling it was going to break down before we got to our destination and it somehow did. If Nate hadn’t insist on taking this car, I would have opted for another one. “Relax. You’re the expert here. You should know what to do.” “Well, I don’t know what to do to get us out of here now. It’s going to take half a day to fix it and,” I stare into the dark atmosphere, “we don’t have that time anymore. Who were those?” I ask Irene as she returns iknto the house. She shrugs. “nobodies.” “what did they want?” I ask calmly, trying not to appear restless. I know the voice of the stranger Irene was speaking to. It felt too familiar to not be recognized. It’s different, bone-chilling, and one that I still find myself attached to even after everything I went through because of him. That was Derek’s voice outside what is supposed to be my home. Does he know I’m here? What could he possibly be looking for in this territory? “Shelter,” she replies casually, sighing out loud as she slumps into the chair. “Something about their car breaking down in the middle of nowhere. DEREK I observe Nate with serious curiosity as he details his experience this morning, going on and on about the stranger we met last night. Honestly, I’ve never seen him so much in to a shewolf like this. “What is it about her that catches your interest so much like this? I ask, cutting him mid sentence. He pauses, gazing at me like I just asked a stupid question before returning his eyes to the road, driving down to his crush’s house, excitedly drumming his fingers on the steering wheel. “Everything,” he blurts out. “She’s perfect, Derek. I’m taking her back home.” “Whoa, whoa. Chill out, man. You’re not going to o do anything like that. Do you want to get her in trouble? “No. If she’s from here, I doubt anyone will have a problem with that.” I scoff, trying to contain my anger. “Do I need to remind you that immigrant wolves are outcasts of their own territories? CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

ISABEL When I heard knocking on the door for the second time, my heart spiked again. I could barely bring myself to open it until Irene’s voice came. I should have looked at the peephole to confirm if it was truly Irene at the door the first time. All day, I had been carefully waiting for the knock to nome because I knew Nate was coming back. I don’t know how I lost my guard and opened it to find him and Derek at the door. It was a shock to my heart, and my head is still ringing from the shock. I was grounded by shock long enough to see the look of surprise on his face before gathering myself together and slamming the door shut. My heart pounding in my chest, threatening to jump out. I ran into the room to hide, locking the door behind me. Then I held my baby in my arms and hoped – prayed – silently that none of those monsters would come in. DEREK Long after Nate had driven off with his new found damsel, which I can bet all four limbs that they would not last long, I still stand in the same spot, staring at the door and desperate to knock. The one I had seen earlier, even though I didn’t see her face clearly, there was an aura about her that seemed all too familiar. I am, for the first time in a year, allowing myself be desperate enough to search for her. Just like I was desperate to fuck her the first night I saw her, and I was desperate to keep her even though it was against the law, hence putting her in trouble. That trouble is the reason I haven’t looked for her all these while. I couldn’t bring myself to put her through that hell again. But today, even if it turns out not to be her, which I’m certain it is, even if she turns me back, hurling every bit of painful words at me every of which I deserve, I still want to clear every bit of doubt in my mind by confirming. ISABEL All these months of hating Derek and what his pack did to me amounted to nothing the moment I opened the door to find him waiting outside with furrowed brows and twisted lips. His hair was fuller and curly strands drop on his forehead.
