I knew Alan well enough; once he got started, it was hard to get him to stop. But still, I can’t just sit while he lashes out at Gia. “Calm down, Alan,” I muttered. He turned to look at me, his face twisted with disbelief, like I’d just said the dumbest thing in the world.“Calm down?” he repeated. “Levi, the herbs are missing. That herb is the only thing we had left. The only thing that could slow the sickness. And you want me to calm down?”
