Rook POV“You’re assuming I’m pretending it didn’t happen. I know it did.” His voice is cold, detached, like he’s already decided how this conversation is going to play out. “Just get it over with, Rook. Tell me it was fucked up, tell me it was wrong. Complain that I went too far, that I shouldn’t have killed. The quicker you say it, the quicker you can leave me the hell alone.”My fingers twitch, and for a second, I want to grab him, shake some fucking sense into him, but I don’t. Instead, I exhale slowly, clenching my jaw. “I’m not about to tell you it was wrong, or that you went too far.” I let the words settle between us, watching as his shoulders tense, like he wasn’t expecting that. “I want to know why you left. You snuck out like you were trying to hide the fact you weren’t coping from me rather than just telling me.”His back is still to me, the water running over his skin, but he doesn’t move. Doesn’t react. It pisses me off.I reach out, my fingers gripping his wrist, forcin

Kade POVI exhale heavily. “She thinks it’s my fault Paul did what he did. That I should’ve never left. That Amelia running, everything, it all comes back to me.”Rook tilts his head slightly. “And do you agree?”I don’t answer right away. I don’t want to. But the silence stretches between us, pressing against my ribs, and eventually, I just nod.“Yeah,” I say quietly. “I do.”He watches me for a long moment, his expression unreadable, then sighs. “You know what I think?”I don’t answer. He steps closer, pressing right up against me, his voice dropping low. “I think you want to punish yourself. And I think you don’t know how.”I clench my jaw, every muscle in my body locking up. “Fuck off, Rook.”His lips twitch, but there’s something darker in his eyes, something knowing. “Hit a nerve, did I?”“Go to hell.”“You first,” he smirks, then nods toward the door. “Come on.”I don’t move. “Where?”“You’ll see.”I exhale through my nose, rubbing the back of my neck before finally, reluctantl

Rook POVI watch as Kade moves around the room, pulling on his clothes with a tension that wasn’t there before. My mind replays everything that just happened, searching for the moment I might have said something wrong, done something to set him off. He looked fine—more than fine—just a few minutes ago. Now, he looks worse than before, like something is clawing at him from the inside.“Kade,” I reach for him, but he sidesteps me, giving me a smile that’s all wrong. It’s forced, too perfect, like a mask he’s desperate to hold in place.“Okay, for a change, I didn’t call you a cat. Did that piss you off?” I try to joke, hoping to drag him back from whatever storm is brewing in his head.He laughs, and it sounds so fucking amazing and real. “I’m fine,” he says, and it’s such an obvious lie that I just stare at him, waiting for the real answer.Instead, he holds out his hand. “I need your phone. As you know, mine is broken.” His voice is calm, but there’s something off about it, something

Rook POVThe game plays on the TV, lighting up the room in shades of blue and white, but Harlow couldn’t care less. She’s curled up in my arms, her tiny hands gripping my hoodie, sucking on her bottle like it’s the most important thing in the world.“You see that?” I murmur to her, tilting the bottle just right. “That’s a perfect zone entry. Clean, no wasted movement. Just like when you decide to impressively spit up all over me right after I change shirts. Perfect execution, great timing, just like Kade out there.”Harlow makes a small noise, uninterested in my expert hockey analysis, but I keep going anyway.“Now watch, he’s pulling coverage. He’s baiting them in, making them think he’s gonna take the shot. But nah, he’s smarter than that.” I pause, smirking as Kade cuts hard, dragging two defenders with him before flicking a perfect pass across the ice. Tyler catches it clean and fires it straight past the goalie. The lamp flashes red, the crowd goes nuts.“And boom, assist.” I gla

Kade POVI throw my shoulder into the first body that gets in my way, sending some poor bastard sprawling against the boards. The impact rattles up my arm, but I barely register it. The crowd erupts, the sound of the hit echoing through the arena, but I don’t stop to soak it in. I’m already chasing the puck.Ben takes possession at center ice, flicking it toward Tyler, who barely has time to react before I’m there, muscling past the defense and cutting into open space. Tyler sees it, sends a quick pass my way, and I catch it clean on my stick before snapping a shot toward the net.It hits the post with a clang, but I’m already in motion, digging in, forcing my way through the bodies in front of the crease. The rebound comes loose, and I don’t hesitate—I drive forward, my stick cutting through the chaos, and bury the puck in the back of the net.The horn blares, the arena erupts, and for the first time in a long time, I let myself feel it. The adrenaline. The rush. The weight that’s be
