When we arrived at the hospital, Oliver took all my documents to register me as a patient, while I was wheeled off to the exam room. They ran a full panel of tests, then took me to a room where I'd be staying overnight, receiving vitamins and under observation. When I entered the room, Oliver was already there, sitting in an armchair, looking at his phone. As soon as he saw me, he put it away and stood up. "Are you feeling better?" "Yes. You can go now." "I have to stay. I can't leave a minor here without a guardian." "I turn eighteen the day after tomorrow. Ask them to make an exception—I can take care of myself." "It's hospital policy. I already asked. Do you really think I want to be here?" he replied, clearly annoyed, then sat back down. A little later, a nurse came in and started setting up my IV medication. "Hi, Aurora. How are you feeling?" she asked. She looked like she was in her forties. "Much better, thank you! Do you know how long I'll need to stay here?"
