•Juliet POV•“Mommy, can I take some Legos to school?” Jace asked as I tucked him into bed, raising the blanket.“Why do you want to take your Legos to school, honey?” I asked, brushing my hand through the curly hair covering his eyes. I made a mental note to take him to the hairstylist to trim those curls.“Theo’s birthday is coming soon, Mommy, and I want to give it to him,” he replied, lowering his gaze.“Oh, my darling,” I touched his chubby cheeks and leaned closer to place a kiss on them. “Don’t worry, baby. How about we go shopping and get new ones for him?”Jace’s eyes brightened. “Thank you, Mommy,” he muttered with a smile.“Now go to bed, my love,” I whispered, and he nodded softly.I stayed there for a while, watching him as he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep before leaving the room. I shut the door quietly to avoid waking him and headed toward my room to sleep.Just as I reached the door, I heard Mrs. Carl talking to someone downstairs. Curious, I paused. Wonderi

•Eric POV•I pulled into the driveway and parked in the lot, my hands still gripping the steering wheel long after the engine went silent. I took a deep breath, then another, trying to prepare myself for whatever waited inside. If I had known this was how my mother would react to my wedding with Vera, I wouldn’t have told her anything until after I was already married. I wouldn’t have given her the chance to interfere, to twist things, to make everything harder than it already was.The thought barely settled before I shook my head. That was stupid. I knew my mother. Or at least, I thought I did.She hadn’t always been like this. Growing up, she was calm, gentle, the kind of woman who spoke softly even when she was upset. Even when my father was still around, when their marriage was already falling apart, she kept her composure. Everything changed after the divorce. After he left her for another woman. That was when something in her broke. She became bitter, controlling, always needing

•Vera POV•“You should, it’s going to be your big day next week, and I can’t wait to see you walk down the aisle,” Juliet said as I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection and admiring the dress once more. The dress clung gently to my body, falling softly around my waist, leaving enough space for my growing stomach. I lifted my hands slightly, touching the fabric like it would suddenly disappear if I wasn’t careful.“I feel excited about this wedding, but I…” I muttered, turning to face her. “I don’t know if it’s going to be a happy marriage, based on everything that has happened recently.”Juliet’s smile faded a little as she walked closer to me. Her gaze were gentle and understanding. “Trust me, Vera. Your marriage to Eric will be a peaceful one, I promise you. Eric loves you, and he’s even willing to do anything to make sure his mother doesn’t ruin this wedding.”My eyes started to sting, and I quickly looked away, afraid the tears would fall if I blinked. I didn’t w

•Vera POV•“Don’t just stand there,” Mrs. Lawson said cheerfully. If I didn’t know her a few days back, I would’ve said she was a nice mother-in-law.“Come sit in the dining room. Thelma would bring the rest of the dishes,” she continued. She looked in my direction, her face brightening with warmth, though I could see dislike beneath it. “Vera, I’m sorry if this is all surprising to you.”She took my hand and I cringed slightly, then looked toward Eric, who nodded at me. “Eric told me that you’re his choice, and I want to respect that.” She glanced briefly in Eric’s direction before turning back to me. “Please forgive me for ever being mean to you. To make it up to you, I prepared a nice soup to make you feel healthy, especially for your baby.”I gave her a thin-lipped smile. “Thank you, Mrs. Lawson. I would loved to taste your soup, but I’m allergic to soup,” I lied as she ushered me into the dining room.Eric pulled out a seat for me, and I sat there before he did.The moment I sat

•Vera POV•After Eric left, I walked out of the room and headed to the kitchen to get a glass of water. As I climbed down the stairs, I noticed that everywhere was quiet, which meant Mrs Lawson and Thelma hadn’t gotten out of bed yet.I made my way into the kitchen and went straight to the refrigerator. I pulled out a bottle of water and poured it into a glass cup on the table.I lifted the glass to drink, but stopped when I heard Mrs Lawson’s voice.“Vera, you know it isn’t good for a pregnant woman to drink cold water in the morning,” she said softly.I turned hastily and saw her sitting at the corner of the kitchen, close to the counter. I wondered why I didn’t look in that direction when I walked in.“Good morning, Mrs Lawson,” I greeted with a smile, but when I noticed she didn’t smile back, mine slowly faded. She stood up from where she was sitting and walked over, grabbing a bottle of room-temperature water from the other side of the kitchen where packs of bottle water were kep
