Chapter 1

Nathan Ridges immediately shut his mouth when he saw me.All eyes in the room turned to me."What are you doing here?" My brother, Lucas Everett, put down his glass and moved aside to make room for me."Mom and Dad are out for a business dinner. I was bored at home alone." I tried to keep my voice steady, but my hands trembled uncontrollably. He nodded and warned the people in the private room, "My sister doesn’t drink. None of you better force her."His friends laughed and teased, "Lucas, you treat your sister so well. What will you do when she gets a boyfriend?"Lucas rolled his eyes with a grin. "I’ll have to check him out thoroughly. Not just any man is good enough for her."The group burst into laughter."What kind of man would be good enough, then? Do any of us qualify?"Lucas glanced around the room, then jokingly settled his gaze on Nathan, who had been silent the whole time. "I guess only Nathan barely makes the cut.""But he doesn’t even take his girlfriend seriousl

I really couldn’t stay any longer, so I made an excuse to go to the restroom.I had barely stepped out when Nathan followed me. The warmth in his eyes from before was gone, replaced by an unreadable mix of cold indifference. My eyes stung, and before I could stop them, tears started falling. I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t accept that the man in front of me had only ever seen me as a pastime."Sienna."My heart trembled. He was calling me by my full name now.He looked at me, raising a hand as if to wipe away my tears, but I turned my face away to avoid him."I’m sorry."Just three simple words, yet they made everything between us clear.Nathan had been abroad for over a month. I had missed him so much that I couldn’t even wait until the next day, so I had rushed over excitedly to join his friends’ gathering. I never expected to uncover such a cruel truth."Sienna, I’m really sorry."I wiped my tears away in frustration. "Nathan, don’t you have anything to say to explain yo

Nathan never came back after answering the call."Bianca called him. No idea what she said, but Nathan's arranged a private jet for her."Everyone laughed at Nathan, but I was the only one who wanted to cry.Despite him treating me well, I was never the special one. All of his tenderness, his devotion, his favoritism—it was all for Bianca. The gathering ended hastily, and I drove Lucas home.Lying in bed, I kept replaying his words in my mind. I had always been quiet and reserved since I was young. On the other hand, Bianca was beautiful, lively, and sweet-talking.I had nothing, but Nathan had noticed me, the girl always in the corner.I still remember the day he said, "Wait up, Sienna! Don’t walk so fast!"Those words had stayed with me for years. At first, I only dared to steal quick glances at him. Then, I couldn't take my eyes off him. Even though I knew Nathan loved Bianca, I still opened my heart to him.Three years ago, he gave me a bouquet of white roses, his eyes fi

Nathan walked in, dressed in a perfectly tailored suit. The moment he stepped through the door, his gaze immediately landed on Bianca. He took a few steps forward, about to speak, but then he noticed me sitting nearby. His steps faltered for a brief moment before he walked straight to Bianca’s side."This is for you.""Really? Let me see!" Bianca excitedly opened the exquisite gift box, revealing a stunning diamond necklace."I knew you’d like it. I specially bid for it at an auction just for you." Nathan’s eyes lingered on Bianca’s face, filled with tenderness and adoration.Unfortunately, he forgot that today was our third anniversary. Technically, we hadn’t even broken up yet.Bianca’s face lit up with joy. "It’s so stunning! Put it on for me!"Nathan smiled and carefully clasped the necklace around her neck. They stood so close together, looking like a perfect match."I love it! You’ve given me so many diamonds, but this one is the most beautiful!"A tight, suffocating fee

My body suddenly tensed, my palms drenched in sweat. As I watched the man approaching, my heart pounded wildly. I had no idea how much he had overheard."Elliot."Nathan’s demeanor shifted in an instant. His previously tense face softened, his tone turning respectful.Elliot White walked straight over. His gaze landed on the necklace lying on the ground before shifting to me. "Did you just say you don’t want it anymore?"Caught off guard by the question, I hesitated for a moment before nodding. Then, Elliot turned to Nathan. "Pick it up and throw it out. Don’t leave trash in my garden."Nathan’s face darkened, but he didn’t dare disobey Elliot’s orders. He picked up the necklace, shot me a long, unreadable look, then turned and left."Thank you, Elliot," I murmured, unable to meet his eyes. I instinctively took a small step back."It’s nothing." Elliot didn’t say anything more, but as he looked at me, shivering slightly in the breeze, his brows furrowed. "Go inside. It’s cold

The dance ended, and the crowd dispersed. Elliot let go of my hand.Suddenly, Nathan grabbed my wrist. He glanced around, and seeing that no one was watching, he lowered his voice with a hint of accusation to say, "Are you really that close with Elliot? Why were you blushing while dancing with him?"I shook off his hand and refused to look at him. "What’s it to you? Ex-boyfriend."Nathan furrowed his brows tightly. "I’m just trying to warn you. Stay away from Elliot. You two don’t belong in the same world."I scoffed lightly. "I don’t know if we belong in the same world, but you and I definitely don’t. Nathan, stop interfering in my life. You’re not in a position to."Though I tried hard to keep my voice steady, my body couldn’t stop trembling. Nevertheless, I straightened my back, determined not to let him see my weakness.Nathan stared at me for a moment before sighing. "Fine, I won’t interfere. But I hope you’ll keep our past to yourself."I gave a cold laugh. So that was wha

The next morning, I woke up early. I felt suffocated at home, so I decided to take a walk by the nearby lake.To my surprise, as soon as I reached the lakeside, I saw Nathan and Bianca happily fishing together. When Bianca saw me, she waved and called out, "Sienna, what are you doing here? Come and fish with me!"Upon seeing me, Nathan immediately averted his gaze without greeting me.Bianca pulled me over to the lakeside, and I stood there, watching her and Nathan chatting and laughing with each other. This was the first time I had seen Nathan smile so happily—a smile I had never received when we were together. The feeling of heartache gradually faded, but there was still a bitterness creeping up my throat. While Bianca was fishing, Nathan moved closer to me and whispered in a low voice, "Sienna, why do this to yourself? I know you love me, but doesn’t this make you sad?""I think you've misunderstood.""Misunderstood what? I thought we had already made things clear. I hope yo

After saying that, Elliot didn’t linger. He quickly walked to the car, settled me in the back seat, and looked me over from head to toe."Is there anywhere you're uncomfortable? Did you inhale too much water?"I shook my head. "Just a little bit, I’m fine. No need for the hospital."However, he stubbornly insisted, "No, you have to go."With that, he immediately started the car, ran through several red lights, and took me to the hospital. After the examination, everything seemed fine, but the doctor said that because the lake water had been a bit cold, I was likely to catch a cold.Elliot listened attentively and bought me a lot of cold medicine. On the way back home, I couldn’t help but ask as I watched his focused side profile while driving, "How did you end up there?""I went to find Bianca. Dad wants to set up a blind date for her.""Ah?" My mind went blank for a moment. "Isn’t she with Nathan?"Elliot coldly chuckled. "Those two will never work."While waiting for the t

After taking a nap, I went downstairs to get some water and found Nathan at my house. When he saw me, he anxiously asked, "Are you feeling okay? Anything hurt?"Seeing no one around, he tried to reach for my hand. "I didn't mean to leave you that day. I just heard Bianca..."I interrupted him, "No need to explain, I understand." I clasped my hands behind my back, clearly denying him."Sienna, even if we're not a couple, you can think of me as an older brother. Why do you have to be like this?""Brother? I have my own real brother. What kind of brother do you think you are?"He sighed. "Sienna, it seems like Elliot has been paying too much attention to you. You need to be careful. Don’t mess with someone like him.""What kind of person?" I scoffed, "Someone who treats others like backup? If someone like you can have love, he can't be any worse, can he?"Nathan got a bit flustered. "I am serious about Bianca!"Then, he immediately stopped himself, awkwardly glancing at me.His

When her words fell, I saw Nathan’s face immediately light up with excitement. His breathing quickened, and his eyes were full of enthusiasm. He was about to reach for Bianca’s hand when she said, "I’m going to get engaged to the heir of the Sutherland Corporation soon. Your blessings are appreciated!"Everyone except for Nathan cheered and clapped for her. His hand froze in midair, trembling slightly. His face turned pale, and there was not a hint of color. This reaction was no different from the one I had when I stood outside the gathering that day.A sense of satisfaction suddenly surged within me. Those who let others down will eventually be let down themselves. Nathan’s retribution came quickly.Elliot’s eyes quickly glanced at me. I felt his gaze but didn’t look away. I met his eyes. He paused for a moment, then a smile appeared in his gaze. However, with a sudden, intense shake, Elliot’s smile immediately turned to panic."Earthquake!"The crowd suddenly erupted into chao
