One of the wealthy young men kicked the easel over, and the others dumped the paint onto the ground, laughing in shrill, grating bursts."Well, well, if it isn't our resident great artist, Jamie Walton. Back here painting again? Let's see what masterpiece you've cooked up this time. Oh, hey, this one's actually pretty good. Didn't know you had that kind of talent in you.""They say you're some kind of heir of the Walton family too. Funny, considering everything you've got on is worth about one buck at a flea market. How'd you end up looking like this? You're worse off than a beggar.""Aw, that's just tragic."An heir of the Walton family?Sharon's brow furrowed slightly. The only member of the Walton family she'd ever heard of was Lesley Walton. She'd never heard of anyone named Jamie Walton.Though, from what she understood, the Walton patriarch had fathered a number of illegitimate children. This guy, Jamie, was probably one of them.Sharon's gaze swept over the group surroun

Sharon said, "Your style is really distinctive. Have you never entered a painting competition? Or is painting just something you do purely for enjoyment?"Plenty of painters loved the craft for its own sake, with no interest in making a living off it or building a reputation. They never bothered entering competitions or showing at galleries. No matter how hard life got, they treated money as an afterthought.Sharon wasn't sure whether Jamie was that kind of painter.A faint, self-mocking curve touched Jamie's lips. "I have. My entries just kept getting pulled before the results came out."Sharon frowned, puzzled. "Why? Your talent seems strong enough that you shouldn't have trouble even clearing the early rounds."Jamie's voice stayed flat. "After I submitted, the paintings would go missing, get damaged, or somehow not fit the competition's theme after all. There were a lot of reasons."Sharon understood immediately.Someone had been pushing him down deliberately.Back when Sh

"I'm free," Jamie said.Sharon said a quick goodbye to Wendy before heading off with Jamie to see her mentor. The night before, Sharon had already reached out to let her know, but her mentor had said, "I'll need to see his work first before I decide."Her mentor was a woman in her fifties, with a warm, approachable face and an air of quiet cultivation. Sharon had been studying under her ever since she first took up painting. At the sight of Sharon walking in with Jamie, Marilyn Callison smiled and waved her over."Well, this is a first, seeing you actually pull strings for someone. But let me say this now, if his skill doesn't meet my standards, you're going to owe me."Sharon smiled. "I've never pulled strings before because I never met anyone worth pulling them for. I'm not nearly as principled as you seem to think, Marilyn."She walked over and poured Marilyn a cup of tea. "I've already talked myself up to him. If you say no, I'll just swap out one of my own pieces and let hi

Sharon couldn't help thinking that If her father hadn't actually died, had he abandoned his wife and children to chase some idea of true love, off living happily with his illegitimate daughter somewhere? But it was pointless thinking too much, so she let the subject drop. Before long, the server brought out the dishes they'd ordered.Sharon said, "The theme Marilyn gave us to work on is Starry Night. I've already scouted out a good spot for it. Do you want to come along?"Jamie looked at her. "Sure."They finished dinner and went their separate ways....Sharon studied painting too, and she had a solid reputation in the field, but her real focus was still the violin. After some thought, Sharon decided she'd keep playing violin while also studying business on the side. Once she felt ready, she'd join the Kalen Group and start easing some of the load off her mother.Whatever she chose, Shayla supported her without question.Over the following days, Sharon and Jamie went out to

But hearing Jamie put it that way, Sharon realized she actually was a little curious.A quiet, focused painter who spent his nights boxing. The contrast was almost too much to reconcile.Sharon found it hard to picture the calm, composed Jamie she knew as the same person throwing punches in a ring."Would that be all right?" she asked."Sure," Jamie said. "I've got a match this Saturday night. If you want to watch, I can take you.""Then I'll take you up on that," Sharon said."I'm the one who caused trouble today," Jamie said. "Made you waste your time and drag me to the hospital. I should be the one apologizing to you.""Even though Marilyn didn't officially take you on as her student," Sharon said, "she thinks highly of you. There's a good chance we'll end up working alongside each other going forward. Helping each other out is just what people in the same circle do. You don't need to be so formal with me."She met his steady, quiet gaze. "Honestly, all I did was put in a go
