Chapter 1

My heart lurched, freezing me in place."Hahaha! Franklin's busy playing corporate chess with Emmett, completely unaware that the guy’s already raided his home turf!" one voice crowed. "Our Emmett even staged that shipwreck rescue—made Franklin's precious niece fall for him right then and there!""They’ve dated for years now—how many photos of her has he snapped? When’s Emmett ending this game? “I’d kill to see her meltdown... but God, Franklin’s face when he finds out his treasure got snatched by Emmett."Emmett and his friends roared with laughter, oblivious to my presence just beyond the elevator doors. Their words echoed in my mind, pounding against my sanity.Emmett Meyer…Had his heroic rescue been a calculated trap?Had our entire relationship just been a move in his vendetta against Uncle Franklin?"Cat got your tongue?" someone jeered at Emmett. "You only chased Claire because Franklin stole that prime piece of real estate in Brighton Reach, didn’t you? Don’t te

The apartment door eased open.Emmett’s voice drifted in from the entrance, laced with playful affection. My fingers froze. The pen tip left a long, black streak across the calendar. His eyes landed on the calendar in my hand, and his lips curved into a faint smirk.“How could I possibly forget my baby’s graduation ceremony? I even planned something special for you that day.”My fingers clenched tightly around the calendar.I looked up, forcing a faint smile as I met his eyes.“I’ve prepared a special gift for you, too.”Emmett paused, then chuckled. “You’re graduating, and yet you’re the one with a gift for me?”I met his eyes, my gaze calm. “Why not? Is that not allowed?”Emmett paused, then chuckled softly.“Of course it is. But Babe, will your Uncle Franklin be attending the graduation?”I smiled, but the warmth didn’t reach my eyes.“Do you want him there?”“Well… if he finds out his lifelong rival has been with his precious niece, he might beat me so badly in f

I pushed open the restaurant door. My gaze swept across each table until it landed on a woman seated by the window. She wore an elegant dress and flawless makeup, her every movement exuding the effortless grace of someone born into wealth. I walked over, pulled out a chair, and sat down without a trace of emotion on my face. She glanced at me. “I booked a private room. Let’s talk there.” Without waiting for a reply, she stood and walked ahead. I had no choice but to follow. Inside the private room, she began pouring a glass of water with deliberate, unhurried gestures. I didn’t rush her. I simply sat in silence and watched. “I’m Amelie Poldark,” she announced abruptly. “Emmett’s fiancée.” She spoke plainly, her tone laced with a hint of provocation. I said nothing, but calmly met her gaze.Amelie clearly hadn’t expected my composure. She pursed her lips. “Aren’t you supposed to be his girlfriend? Don’t you have anything to say about me suddenly showing up a

I turned and saw Emmett standing there, his face twisted in fury. The moment Amelie spotted him, she put on a wounded expression and threw herself into his arms, tears spilling down her cheeks.“Your girlfriend is so cruel, Emmett,” she sobbed. “I just wanted to talk to her, and she tried to hit me…”Seeing her weep so pitifully in his arms, Emmett’s face darkened further.“Claire!” he snapped. “Why did you hit her for no reason? Was it Franklin who taught you that, or did I?”My eyes burned red with anger, and my voice trembled with fury. “For no reason? What a joke! The restaurant has surveillance—go check the footage. See for yourself why I hit her, and what she did to me!”Could he not see how soaked I was? The disheveled state I was in?I had intended to lay out the facts calmly and reasonably, but he blindly defended Amelie, never once bothering to confirm the truth.“No matter what happened,” he said coldly, “you shouldn’t have raised your hand. Amelie said she only as

I spent a few days in the hospital, and Emmett didn’t leave my side the entire time.On the day I was discharged, he looked at my thin, pale face, a flicker of concern flashing through his eyes.“Once you're back home, Claire, you really need to start taking care of yourself. You’ve lost so much weight, there’s hardly anything left of you.”I picked up my luggage, my expression calm and unreadable.“There’s no need. I feel fine now—better than I ever have.”His brows knit slightly at my words. Something about my tone unsettled him. He glanced at me, as if searching for an answer I wouldn’t give.“You call this fine? You look like a gust of wind could carry you away. I even asked Carole to teach me how to make beef stew. “I’ll cook it for you every day until you're glowing and healthy again.”I turned away, avoiding his eyes.“There is no ‘every day’ anymore. Not for us,” I said softly. After I returned home, I got a call from Uncle Franklin.“Claire, I had the villa by th

After arriving, I spent an entire day sleeping off the jet lag at the estate. The next morning, while scrolling through the news, I came across a shocking headline—yesterday, a flight from Silverbridge to Brighton Reach had crashed.A chill ran down my spine. I felt a wave of lingering dread and immense relief. Thank God I hadn’t boarded that flight back to Brighton Reach. I had followed Uncle Franklin’s advice and flown to Montverre instead. But what I didn’t expect was to see Emmett on a live news broadcast at the crash site. The mountainous area had already been cordoned off by rescue teams. A reporter stood before the camera, reporting from the scene.Suddenly, Emmett burst into the frame, charging recklessly toward the wreckage.“You’re out of your mind!”Rescue workers trailed after him, shouting, “This is an active crash site, sir! There’s a high risk of secondary explosions! Do you have a death wish?”Three responders caught up with him, pulling him to the ground

Silverbridge.Everyone in his circle whispered the same thing—Emmett had lost his mind.He spent his days stationed at the crash site, desperately trying to recover any trace of Claire’s belongings. Even as jagged debris tore into his palms, drawing deep, red gashes, he wrapped them with nothing more than a flimsy layer of gauze and continued his relentless search. He refused to eat, refused to sleep, refused to stop. All he wanted was to find Claire.A week later, his body finally gave in. He collapsed in the icy woods, weakened by hunger and exhaustion. When he opened his eyes again, Amelie sat by his hospital bed.“You need to stop this, Emmett,” she said gently. “There’s nothing more you can do. Let the officials handle the investigation.”Emmett did not reply. His eyes drifted to the window, fixed on nothing.“It’s already been a week,” Amelie continued softly. “The chances of Claire surviving are incredibly slim.“She’s gone, Emmett. You have to accept it.”His che

I thought about it for a while, but ultimately decided not to contact Emmett to clear up the misunderstanding. After all, a respectable ex should behave as if they’re dead—silent, distant, and out of sight.Besides, even if he felt a little heartbroken now, Amelie’s presence would no doubt soothe him soon enough. The Meyers and Poldarks had already arranged their alliance; their wedding was just around the corner. Each of us had a bright future ahead.Montverre was a city brimming with irresistible charm. Everyone there lived like a star, embracing life with effortless flair. Even if the world were ending tomorrow, they’d still finish the coffee in their hands today. Its fast-paced rhythm pushed me to devote myself fully to every fashion gala I attended. In less than three years, I had built a wide network of industry partners. But the work remained relentless, and in pursuit of becoming Glamor Rush’s next editor-in-chief, I constantly searched for new breakthroughs in th

Chapter 9

At first, I got a little carried away with myself. But as my career soared to new heights, the number of men trying to get close to me rose just as quickly. There were those who showed up on my private yacht wearing nothing but sheer swimwear. Some would "accidentally" brush against my arm at art galleries. Others engineered what looked like chance encounters but were clearly planned with care.People often say that once a man reaches a certain level of success, women will throw themselves at him. The truth is that successful women attract just as much attention. Some even dug into my past and arranged for a rising male model to meet me.His name was Calvin Wentworth, and apparently, he was fashion’s newest darling. At first, I paid him no mind. But when he lowered his gaze and smiled faintly, he looked just like Emmett at eighteen.Against my better judgment, I gave him my number. I even gave him the New Year’s cover shoot as a gift.At that moment, I understood

Chapter 10

"Claire," Emmett called out to me gently. "It’s been a long time…"I took the barstool next to him and finally noticed how much he had changed in the years we’d been apart. Shadows clung beneath his eyes, and a weariness I didn't recognize had etched itself into his gaze."Are you doing okay?" I asked, my eyes drifting toward the familiar hair tie on his wrist. "What happened to your hand?"He didn’t answer right away. His brows furrowed as he looked down, exhaustion lining his features."I got hurt," he said after a pause.Surprised, I waited as he continued. "I tried to end my life. Twice."His eyes met mine, his voice quiet and steady in a way that made my heart ache. "Do you know why?" he asked. How could I possibly know?Emmett turned his face toward the window, his voice dropping. "You wouldn’t want to know."He didn’t elaborate. Instead, he shifted the conversation toward the details of the upcoming shoot, as if nothing had happened. When it was time to
