Dakota woke slowly, as though surfacing from the bottom of a deep, black sea. At first, she wasn’t sure where she was. Her body felt weightless and heavy at the same time, caught between dream and waking. Her eyelids fluttered weakly, and when she finally managed to open them, the world tilted. White lights blurring, soft beeping in the distance, unfamiliar shadows moving along pale walls. It took several seconds for her to realize she was lying in a hospital bed.
