The fact that I had spent such a long time in captivity, yet no one had found me, was both crazy and scary in equal measure. I couldn't stop wondering how Michael managed to explain away my absence to my coworkers and even Lucy, or if anyone even suspected him of having a hand in it.The country was notorious for several kidnappings, especially those of foreigners, so it wouldn't have been far-fetched to think that people who knew me would chalk up my sudden disappearance to being kidnapped by one of the many notorious gang groups that terrorised the area.I wondered most especially if Lucy had any inkling that anything was amiss. Due to the distance between us, our very different schedules, and our different time zones, we could only talk on the phone about once a month. However, we sent messages to each other at least weekly, or at worst, biweekly. It would be easy for Michael to fake being me by sending messages to her to convince her that I was fine, and pretend that I was the on

Amanda’s POVI kept drifting in and out of consciousness after that. In the moments when I was awake, I tried not to dwell on the pain that engulfed my entire being. It was so difficult to move, to breathe, to do anything at all. I found some more instructions about how to take care of myself that Michael left, and I followed them to the letter, because despite everything that I had been through, I sure as hell didn’t want to die.A week passed, and Michael didn’t show up to check on me. I started to think that he had decided to leave me for dead. It didn’t help matters that my condition was deteriorating by the day. All I did was try to force myself to eat something, even though I had zero appetite and could barely keep anything down, then I would pop painkillers to reduce the pain I was feeling.Soon, I developed a fever. My guess was that I had developed an infection from the makeshift cesarean section that Michael performed on me. Maybe this was what would kill me, and I would ha

Lucy's POVToday is the first day of work after our return from our very successful business trip, and I find myself feeling a little nervous as I head into Nathan's office. Will he act as though nothing happened between us on that trip and carry on as we did before the trip?I get my answer as soon as I walk into the office. Nathan looks up from his desk, his gaze smoldering in approval as he looks me up and down.I intentionally chose this outfit today, because I know very well that it makes me look extra sexy, and seeing the approval in his eyes is very rewarding.“Morning, Lucy. You’re earlier than usual today. You look beautiful as usual.” He tells me, his calm, polite words belying the hot look in his eyes.“Good morning, Nathan, and thank you for the compliment. I woke up early today because I went to bed earlier than usual yesterday, which is why I came in this early.” I reply, feeling unaccustomedly shy. Those words are not exactly true. I had rushed to work because I was eag

Lucy’s POV“So I’m sure you ladies are wondering why I gathered you both today.” My dad tells Amy and me as we sit with him and my mother in the grand living room. It's almost nine at night, and I had been preparing to sleep, but he sent us both texts saying that we needed to come downstairs so he could talk to us.“Yes, Dad,” I reply.“Okay, well. Your mother and I have decided that you probably need your own spaces.”“Oh, I’m so sorry, sir. I know I’ve overstayed my welcome, and I'm so sorry about that. I'm working hard on getting my own place so I can stop being a burden to you and …” Amanda starts to say, sounding embarrassed, but my dad cuts her off immediately.“Don’t be ridiculous, Amanda. That was in no way what I meant. We love having you here, as we've come to see you as our daughter in the short time we've spent together, and it will always remain so. I wasn’t in any way suggesting that I wanted you to leave. Hell, if it were possible to have more people live here, it would

Austin’s POV“Jeez! That fucking child is crying again! What the fuck is wrong with it? And why isn’t the fucking nanny taking care of it?” Amy’s angry voice jolts me from my sleep.I rub my eyes wearily, already mentally preparing myself for another bout of quarrel. It’s all we’ve been doing since before the baby came, and it’s worsened ... something I didn't think was possible due to the amount of fighting we'd been doing ... ever since she had the baby. When I sit up in bed, I find her standing silhouetted by my bedroom door. The room is dark, so I can't see her face. I can only see her profile, but I can sense the anger radiating off her entire being.“The nanny isn’t taking care of the baby because you sent her away this evening, remember? She's the third nanny you’ve dismissed since the arrival of our daughter, barely three weeks ago. Also, I’d appreciate it if you stopped using the word 'fucking' when referring to our daughter, and stopped calling our daughter ‘it.’ She has a n
