Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 11: The First of Many Yet to Come

They allowed us to eat dinner, which was a blessing. Even more shockingly, we went to bed at a reasonable hour. We weren’t sure why but Sage’s theory was that the counselors gave them a talking to about the difference between training and trying to kill a person.Maybe it was the power of suggestion, or maybe I was getting some kind of radiation from the barrier. That night though I dreamed of something odd and it was so vivid that I questioned if it was actually a dream or not.The sky was a swirling dazzle of colors as I looked out over a vast forest. There were too many stars in the sky and too may colors in the air. Wind itself was twirling around me as I was swept away by a feeling of pure bliss. My feet were exposed on the cold hard ground. I looked and saw the ground I was on was a pure white marble with grains of grey that reflected the starlight. I could hear someone talking farther away.Their voice was metall

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 12: Time was Flying By

I was thrown down for the tenth time today. This time I stayed down. Apparently, fighting against the boys was the first true lesson they wanted to throw at us. We had spent the week following their orders and now we had to finally face off against someone far larger than us. When we arrived at this other base we were surprised at how much better put together it was. The buildings were far better maintained and they had actual sidewalks. On our way here we were once again reaffirmed of the secrecy of our mission. Lyra it seemed, was going to be a permanent fixture in the shadows. With the ever-looming threat of instant death or the slower suffocation over our heads, no one dared to talk about it.“This fucking sucks!” Sylis cursed picking herself up, “how the fuck are we meant to be stronger than you?” Compared to how our other training had been going this was honestly far less structured. We were self-guided the whole day able

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 13: One Year Later

“It’s been a year.” Dara smiled, “Care to tell me how it’s been going?”It had been a year. In that time I had grown stronger, faster, and more sure of myself. Even learned to follow orders. By this time, my friends would have all aged out of their training camps and were well into their service at the barrier fighting whatever monster there was. “I think it’s going well.” my answers had become shorter. Maybe it was because I had less self doubt or maybe because I just didn’t feel broken anymore. After two months of training, they allowed us to write home. Of course with the understanding that all outgoing and incoming letters would be monitored with heavy scrutiny. I think being able to communicate with my mom and friends was what ended up making the difference. “Just well?” she tapped her pen on her clipboard, “Anything else you want to share? I hear the next stage of y

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 14: It needs to be About me...

Our days continued on. We thought it would change more but really we just saw the counsellors less. Granted we focused on specific weapon training now and I was allowed to focus on a spear, but apart from that everything else was the same. That is until a month passed. They started to separate us by blood type. We were given tasks that they said would fit our blood. Sage had been given menial tasks, reading, carrying stuff, cleaning. Dreyma more fighting and physical tasks that we were told were going to make sure all the difference. Me on the other hand, I was learning I needed to conduct myself with the highest of class and it was encouraged that I look down on the lower bloods. “I’m jealous of Sage and Dreyma.” I told Dara, “Sage gets to read, do research. Dreyma gets to use her training. I feel like everything that I worked toward before was useless.” “How do you mean?” “Yesterday I spent an hour learning how to brew tea.” “Did you notice if it was different to how yo

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 15: A Letter of a Final Goodbye

“Two years ago you started this journey.” Dara was on her twentieth notebook. I had been counting. Today we were meant to spend the whole day with our counsellor and like always she was able to make it last, “Today I want you to write a letter to everyone you knew.” I shrugged just resigning to the session, I didn’t think I needed it but oh well I was getting this. “Why?” “I want you to tell them goodbye.” “What?” That caused me to start paying attention. “You need to tell them goodbye.” She said again, “You’re not going to see them ever again. In a few years they will think you’re dead. We need you to prepare for this because we are expecting it to be the hardest part of this journey.” “So you want me to say goodbye now?” She nodded, “Use today to write it out.” We broke for lunch and everyone was pondering over their own notebook. We had all been given these instructions it seems. “What are you going to say?” I looked to Dreyma she’d at least get to keep one member of her fa

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 16: The Dream to Bare Fruit

I willed it into existence. I was finally back on that balcony facing toward the castle. The sky filled with those stars and next to me, that husk of shadows was looking up at them. “I was worried.” He spoke low refusing to look my way. “Still looking for me?” I leaned back, resting my arms on the ledge. “Every single day.” his head sank with a defeat that was as somber as his words. He sounded defeated. “What’s wrong?” I reached out to touch him but he shrank away. “I’m here now.” He nodded, “You’ll be gone again before sunrise.” “So let’s have fun now.” I twirled my fingers through my hair playfully but honestly, I was losing sight of how to flirt. It had been two years since needing to tap into those skills and they were getting rusty. I hoped I could be forgiven for the awkwardness but the air was still clinging to that heavy loss.  “Why can’t we find you?” He finally turned to me. “Y

Part 1: Asfalia Chapter 17: Family Day

Both of my parents came, I hadn’t wanted my father to but I wasn’t about to let that spoil seeing my mother. I hugged her so tightly that she almost felt faint. I didn’t care. We were thick as thieves when my father was away and all these memories suddenly were flashing through my mind. She was always there, she knew everything and now when I wanted to share this one important thing my mouth as sealed shut. Our special connection was never going to be replaced. I kept telling myself that I was creating a better world for her. This world was going to be better and future generations wouldn’t need to fight at all. “Honestly,” she laughed, “We haven’t seen you in a very long time and your letters are hardly enough. How is everything going?” “Hopefully you’re showing your true talents.” My father boomed, he always did want to make sure I was reaching for the head of the pack. “Everything is going so well, thank you for coming. I’ve missed you bo
