Tom got a hold of himself, going back into the restroom so he could wash his face. He headed down to Eric’s room, nodding and smiling at the nurse seated at her station as he walked by. He needed to be strong. When Tom entered the room, Eric looked up at him, shocked.“You’re still here?”“Of course I am,” said Tom, a little annoyed. “I promised, didn’t I?”Eric narrowed his eyes. “Come here, baby, I want to see you. Have you been crying?”“It’s okay, really.”“Sit next to me, please.” Eric held his hands out to him, and pulled the chair close again. “I heard,” he said, barely above a whisper. “I’m so sorry you had to go through that. I thought you took off after those ugly, ugly…” Eric’s voice caught.“Shh, shh, babe. Don’t worry about that right now.
