The morning sun filtered through the hospital blinds, casting stripes of light across the sterile white walls. The pattern shifted slowly as the sun climbed higher, painting geometric shadows that crawled across the floor like living things. Ronald sat in the chair beside Jeffrey's bed, his head resting against the wall, eyes closed but not sleeping. He hadn't slept at all. He'd tried, around three in the morning when exhaustion had nearly pulled him under. But every time his eyes closed, he saw Jeffrey's car burning on the side of the road, saw the charred body the police had pulled from the wreckage, saw Jeffrey's pale face on the hospital bed looking so vulnerable and still. So he'd given up on sleep and just sat there, watching, waiting, hoping. The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the room, a rhythmic reminder that Jeffrey was alive, that his heart was beating, that there was still hope. Jeffrey hadn't moved, hadn't made a sound since they'd brought him in

The sun was setting when Jeffrey finally stirred, painting the sky outside the window in shades of orange and pink and purple. The golden light streamed through the blinds, turning everything in the room warm and soft.It was so small at first that Ronald almost missed it. Just a flutter of Jeffrey's eyelids, barely noticeable. Then a slight movement of his fingers, a twitch that could have been nothing."Jeffrey?" Ronald leaned forward immediately, his heart suddenly racing. "Jeffrey, can you hear me?"Another flutter, stronger this time. Jeffrey's face scrunched up slightly like he was fighting against something, struggling to break through layers of fog and darkness."Come on, Jeffrey," Ronald whispered, squeezing Jeffrey's hand gently. "Can you hear me? Come back to us."Then, slowly, like watching a sunrise, Jeffrey's eyes opened. He blinked several times against the light, his eyes unfocused and confused, trying to make sense of where he was."Ronald?" His voice was hoarse, bare

In the hallway, Kyla was waiting, leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. She looked up when Ronald emerged."How'd it go?" she asked."He needs time," Ronald said, running a hand through his hair. "And I'm going to give it to him. However much he needs.""That's probably smart," Kyla agreed. "Give you both a chance to heal, to process everything that's happened. Trust isn't rebuilt overnight.""What about you?" Ronald asked, focusing on her to distract himself from the ache in his chest. "When are you leaving?""Tomorrow morning," Kyla said, and there was both relief and sadness in her voice. "I've already booked the flight. Paris, Charles de Gaulle. I figured I'd start there, see where life takes me.""Does Jeffrey know?""Not yet. I'll tell him tomorrow morning before I go. I want to say goodbye properly, apologize for everything and not just disappear."Ronald nodded. "He's going to miss you. You are still his family regardless of everything that has happened.""Yeah, I on

Three months later, Ronald walked into his office to find Connor waiting for him."We need to talk," Connor said without preamble.Ronald sighed and set down his briefcase. "About?""About what you're planning to do with my mother's assets. The companies, the properties, all of it."After Victoria's recovery, she'd been arrested and charged with multiple crimes. She was currently awaiting trial, and the legal battle over her organization's assets was ongoing."I haven't decided yet," Ronald said honestly. "It's complicated.""It's my mother's life's work," Connor said. "Whatever else she did, whatever crimes she committed, she built that empire from nothing.""She built it on the backs of people like Kyla," Ronald countered. "People she forced into servitude.""I know that," Connor said, frustration evident in his voice. "Don't you think I know that? But she's still my mother, Ronald. And she did what she did to survive, to protect me.""That doesn't excuse it.""I'm not asking you to

Six months after Victoria's death, Ronald found himself standing in front of Jeffrey's favorite restaurant. He'd reserved the entire place for the evening, every detail carefully planned.Inside, candles flickered on every table, and soft music played. Jeffrey walked in, looking confused."What's all this?" he asked."This," Ronald said, taking his hand, "is me trying to do something romantic for once."Jeffrey laughed. "You? Romantic? Are you feeling okay?""Shut up and sit down," Ronald said, but he was smiling. They ate dinner, talking and laughing like they always did. But Ronald was nervous, his hand occasionally moving to his pocket where a small box rested. After dessert, as they were finishing their wine, Ronald stood up."Jeffrey," he began, and his voice was shaking. "We've been through a lot together. Probably more than most couples face in a lifetime.""That's one way to put it," Jeffrey said, smiling."And through all of it, through every crisis and every challenge, you'v
