Daphne's POV The creak of hurried footsteps broke across the hall before I could move. A figure darted through the doorway, cloak dragging behind him. One of his kind, fangs faintly showing, breath ragged. He nearly stumbled as he stopped short, eyes wild, voice catching in his throat.“Intruding my house like it’s a public market must stop, Scott,” I said, planting my feet and clenching my fist.Scott stayed where he was, leaning against the edge of the table like he owned it. “I apologize for my guard’s lack of courtesy, Daphne,” he replied, his tone all velvet. “And you, hope you brought good tidings?”“I’m… I’m sorry, sir,” he stammered, eyes darting between me and Scott. “The vampires… they’re killed. We can’t find the cure yet.”Scott did not move at once. He stood still, shoulders relaxed, his stare fixed on the trembling messenger. I watched his jaw tighten, the faintest tick breaking through his calm mask.
