ERYN Sorrows, sorrows, prayers. “Niko, baby, slow down!” I was laughing out loud, my voice full of joy, the kind of laugh I hadn’t let out in months. The sun was pouring down over the field, golden and warm, wrapping us both in light. Niko’s giggle echoed ahead of me, that sweet, high sound that always made my chest ache with love. He was running with that little fox backpack he loved so much bouncing on his shoulders, feet stomping through the flowers. “Mama! Look!” He turned, waving the dandelion he just plucked, his cheeks puffed out in excitement. “I made a wish!” I suddenly felt hot liquid run down my eyes, I was crying, though I didn’t know why. It was all so perfect. But then, like a blink, everything shifted. The sky darkened. The flowers wilted beneath my feet, turning gray. The wind grew heavy and sharp. I blinked again, and Niko was further ahead, too far away from me. “Niko!” I shouted, trying to run, but my legs were heavy, like they were tied down.
