I held his gaze, heart thudding wildly beneath my skin. “Some things,” I replied slowly, “lose their meaning over time.”It was as though I could feel that his eyes darkened for a second, but he let the statement hang in the air and he didn’t press further. Then just lay back down beside me, one arm folding beneath his head again. I rolled over once more, facing away from him as my eyes stayed wide open. That necklace, God! I should’ve been more careful with where I left it, I would have thought Antonio was asleep but I knew he wasn’t, judging from his laborious breathing and constant heaving if not sighs.The silence in the room was thick, especially now that I was sure he was awake. I laid still, pretending to be asleep, but every nerve in my body was lit, tingling with tension. Antonio hadn’t moved since he brought up the necklace. His body was silent, composed… but I knew better that he wasn’t the type to bring up matters without a reason and he never, ever, let things slide.
