Richard Devlin was dying. Not from Frederick's plan. Frederick was in custody, the charges against him building into something so thorough and carefully put together that the prosecution team had told Lucian's lawyers it would occupy a courtroom for the better part of a year. Frederick would face what was coming to him. Richard had nothing to do with the timing of that.Richard was dying from something older than poison and more patient than any plan Frederick had spent thirty years putting together. He was dying from his own body, which had spent eighty years in the service of a man who had never once treated it as something worth looking after, and which had finally, with the quiet certainty of things that have been ignored for too long, decided it was done. The heart, the doctors said, was failing. His body had made the decision for him, in the end.Lucian told me on a Sunday.Sunday mornings had become something of a ritual by then — unhurried in a way the rest of the week rarely

I had not known, before this, what it felt like to be completely without walls. That is not a small thing for me to admit. I know that. I have spent most of my adult life building the kind of inner defences that do not allow for unguarded moments — not out of coldness, or not only out of coldness, but out of a very specific understanding, learned early and reinforced constantly, that a man who can be reached can be used. My father had taught me that. He had taught me by example and by consequence, and I had been an attentive student, and by the time I was old enough to question what he had taught me I had already built my entire life around it.I had been shot at twice and responded both times with the calm, unhurried thinking of a man running a calculation. I had been poisoned. I had held my dead pregnant wife in my arms. I had sat across tables from men who had decided I was a problem they intended to solve permanently, and I had held their gaze and smiled with the easy confidence o

Kael's POVI had never been to Texas. For most people that wouldn't be worth mentioning. For me, it was a genuinely strange gap. I had worked in thirty-seven countries across four continents. I had operated in active conflict zones — four of them, at various points. I had once driven through a military checkpoint with a man folded into the boot of a car and a smile on my face that I held steady for the full forty-five seconds until we were clear of the barrier and into the tree line, at which point I allowed myself one long, slow breath and kept driving. I had been in places that didn't appear on maps available to the public. I had done work that had no clean name in the language of ordinary employment. And yet somehow, in all of it, Texas had never come up.It seemed, for reasons I didn't look at too closely, like a reasonable place to start whatever came after this.After. That wasn't a word I had used much. My working life had been built, deliberately and necessarily, around the pr

(Serena's POV – Four months after the bridge)He called from a number I didn't recognise. That was the first thing — the unfamiliar digits on the screen, the brief pause before my thumb moved to answer or dismiss. I had developed, over the past year, a careful wariness about unknown numbers. Not paranoia, but its close and reasonable neighbour, born from a period in which unknown things had reliably turned out to be significant ones. I had learned to give the unfamiliar a beat of thought before proceeding. It had been four months. Long enough that the bridge had moved back from the front of my daily thoughts and settled into the middle distance — still visible, still part of the landscape of the past year, but no longer the first thing my mind went to. Long enough that I had stopped having the dream about the concrete ledge and the sixty feet of cold water and the particular quality of Marcus's voice in those final minutes. Long enough that some days I moved through an entire ordinary

Serena's POV I did not want a spectacle. This had been the first and most stubborn negotiation of the entire engagement — longer, in some ways, than any of the conversations about the actual meaning of what we were doing, about the weight of it and the particular boldness of two people who had come through what we had come through deciding to make it official. Those conversations had been easier. Lucian is good at the real thing underneath the surface of things. What he is considerably less good at is scale. He had wanted a spectacle. Lucian is a man who, when he decides something is worth doing, considers doing it halfway a form of disrespect to the thing itself. He had stood in the study three weeks after we got engaged and presented me with the first guest list with the expression of someone offering a reasonable opening position. The guest list had two hundred and forty names on it.I looked at it for a long moment. Then I handed it back.He returned ten days later with two hundr
