At around 1 am, Amelia woke up to hunger as her stomach started to rumble. She tried to sleep back in fear that she would be caught by Ryan. She wasn't ready to face him honestly. But she definitely couldn't sleep on an empty stomach, so she got up and put on a tank top and shorts. She knew the house would be dark so she took her phone to use the flashlight while hoping Ryan was asleep by now. Amelia opened the door quietly and tiptoed past Ryan's room. After doing that successfully, she walked down the stairs headed to the kitchen. As soon as she set foot on the bottom of the stairs, she heard a sound. She dismissed it at first, thinking she was hearing things. She heard it again, and started to get scared. She contemplated going back to her room but that wasn't possible because she was hungry. The door to the kitchen was open and she saw light coming through, thinking it was a flashlight. Amelia held up her soft, sweaty palm ready to strike the intruder even if it may have little t

" The hell?! " She screamed and yanked her towel from the floor, covering up in a hurry. Ryan stood there, staring at her with something stronger than lust. Love? Lounging? Amelia frowned, not being able to decipher what he meant. She wrapped her arms around herself and raised her eyebrows. " Well? "Ryan snapped out of what seemed like trance and he shook his head several times, " Uhh... So... Sorry! I'm so sorry, I didn't know you were uh... " He looked to be at loss for words.Amelia smirked, " So, the great Ryan could go still at the sight of a woman's body? "Now it was Ryan's turn to smirk as he decided to turn around the situation. Carefully, he went around the pieces of broken glass to place her breakfast on the table, then he made his way to her, not stopping until he stood directly before her. He was standing too close. Too dangerously close, Amelia thought. " Well, if the woman in question is Amelia, I definitely would. Now, say my name again, Angel. " He whispered the la

Relief washed through her. She nodded and scanned the room for an empty space.A girl she vaguely knew, Kara, from one of her lab groups, shifted her bag off the chair beside her and gestured. “ Here, ” she whispered with a smile.Amelia slipped into the seat with a quiet, “ Thanks, ” and tried to focus on the board.Tried.Chemistry wasn’t her favorite subject on a good day, and today her mind was anywhere but here. Mr. Hayford’s monotone voice droned on about ionic bonds while she tapped her pen against the desk, resisting the urge to check her phone.Every few minutes, Evan glanced her way from two rows back, but she didn’t turn around. She wasn’t in the mood for awkward conversations, or for trying to explain why she kept brushing off his gestures. The clock ticked painfully slow, each minute stretching into an eternity. By the time Mr. Hayford finally closed his book and dismissed the class, Amelia felt like she’d survived a marathon. The scraping of chairs filled the room as stu

Amelia blinked, caught off guard. “ What about him? ”Stella tilted her head, “ Won’t he be worried you’re out late? At a party? With Evan, of all people? ”For a beat, Amelia felt her chest tighten but she forced a laugh, waving the thought away, “ Nah. I already told him I would be going to a party, so he won’t be worried. ”Her laugh sounded fake even to her own ears.Stella didn’t look convinced, “ If you say so… ”The unease in Amelia’s stomach twisted tighter. She smiled anyway, masking it the best she could.“ Come on, ” she said quickly, changing the subject. “ Let’s see how we look in the mirror. ”Together, they stepped in front of Stella’s tall standing mirror. While Stella bold and glittering, Amelia was soft and understated. They looked at each other and, at the same time, smiled.“ Perfect, ” Stella whispered.Amelia nodded slowly, but even as the smile lingered on her lips, that creeping feeling of uncertainty wouldn’t go away.Somewhere in the back of her mind, Ryan’s

Ryan’s nostrils flared. The word kid hit him wrong. “ That’s none of your business, ” he growled. “ Move aside. ”Why was he mad because they said he was too old for her? He wasn't that old, was he? They didn’t move though. They stood firm, blocking him as though they had any right. His patience was thinning with every wasted second. Inside, Amelia could be laughing with someone, maybe even dancing with that punk Evan. The thought made his blood pressure spike. The taller guard gave him another once-over, his gaze steady but unimpressed. “ Look, sir. You could be anyone. We can’t just let you walk in because you say you’ve got a girlfriend inside. Rules are rules. ”Ryan closed his eyes briefly, pulling in a sharp breath. He had promised himself not to cause a scene, at least not yet. These men were doing their job. But if they thought he would walk away? They didn’t know who they were dealing with. His last card. He reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out his sleek leather
