I was dead.My wolf floated in the air, looking at my body lying in a pool of blood. In the bedroom, the rogue wolf was still ransacking the safe for valuable items. There was a thud, a gust of wind blew into the den, then the rogue wolf left. The large, spacious flat was all messy. It was the mark of my struggle with the rogue wolf before I died.I looked at my body vacantly, wondering when someone would finally find my death.Karl and I had a fight, and he hadn't been back for days.He shouted angrily to me, "Julie, I won't come back if you won't accept Danielle to work for me. Mindlink me when you figure it out."It was dark again, but no one mindlinked me, and no one came back either. My wolf's spirit tried floating out, and it worked. It floated to pack headquarters. The light in Karl's office was still on. There was a sudden knock on the door.A young she-wolf, walked in, it was Danielle, "Karl, aren't you off work yet?"It was already eight o'clock, and Danielle hadn't left yet

He looked up slightly, revealing fierce, bloodthirsty eyes.I remembered at that night when I opened the door, his wolf sprang at me, maw wide: its fangs sank into my throat like silver daggers, while claws ripped through flesh to grasp my beating heart. I tasted blood and something else… the coldness of its feral intent.Karl hit those eyes and his temples suddenly jumped, "Is that rogue wolf?"Andrew nodded, "You are right. He has been working cases for years and I've never seen anyone more brutal. Not just burglary but murder."The rogue wolf's just-as-grim sight sank slightly as he met Karl's.What kind of look was that on his face? I probably guessed. In my bedroom, there was a mateship picture of Karl and I hanging, and he'd glanced at it when he'd burglarized. This was why he recognized Karl."Karl, what's wrong?" Andrew asked and signaled the warriors to take the rogue wolf away."Did he kill anyone else? How many?""So far, based on what's been reported, two clans have been b

The next day.The cops wrapped up their investigation, and it turned out I was killed by that rogue wolf wolf Leon they nabbed a couple of days back. Leon was careful, but when I fought back, I clawed some skin off his wolf. The pack forensic doctor matched the skin and hair under my nails to his DNA—bang on.Andrew grilled Leon for two straight days and nights without sleep. Leon finally cracked and spilled all his crimes: breaking into Clawkeep, offing me, then stealing stuff. After the funeral, everyone left, but Karl sat by my grave for ages. Sun was shining nice, so he leaned against the gravestone and closed his eyes like he was dozing off, but when he "slept," tears leaked from the corners of his eyes. Steven saw that and turned away, went to wait by the car down the hill.As the sun was setting, Karl stood up, picked some wildflowers nearby, tied them into a bunch, and laid them at my grave, then he knelt and kissed the cold gravestone."Julie, wait for me."I floated there

Karl stepped out of the werewolf prison, and there stood his mom, her cane already swinging to smack Karl hard."Do you want me to die? We already lost Julie as family and are you trying to make me lose you too?" she snapped, "Starving yourself in there? You wanna die on me?Karl caught her arm but grinned."Ma, who's feeding you lies? Tell me, I'll knock them out cold. I'd be a corpse by now if not eating."His mother shut up quickly, but her eyes lingered on his gaunt frame, worry creasing her face. Karl was still talking and smiling to make her let out a breath. He guided her toward the lobby doors of the Nightwatch Division, ignoring Danielle like she was a ghost. Danielle waited till they'd passed her by before her voice cracked."Karl, didn't you see me? I've been here since dawn."He froze and turned, "Danielle, why are you here? You're not my mate nor my family. Who the hell are you to come see me?"Her face went white, fingers digging into her palms, "Karl, are you mad at me

The next morning when he woke, I saw he'd been clutching a tiny bone whistle all night. I froze cause this was the one I'd bought for our pup, and it was put in the nursery. After the pack hospital confirmed the pregnancy, I passed a pack toy shop and grabbed this bone whistle that made bird sounds. I wanted to buy more, but Karl stopped me and said it was too early, so I only bought this one then. We lost our pup soon and it was too fast to decorate the pup room and too fast to buy him toys. Karl set the whistle down and headed to the bathroom. Ten minutes later, he was out the door for Pack Headquarters. Watching his gradually emaciated figure, I felt sad."Autumn came and the whole streets yellowed with flying leaves. Danielle dropped her resignation and left the Pack Headquarters. Carlos's legs got better every day, so Karl asked him back to work. Thinking Karl was swamped, Carlos agreed, but after a month, he was confused. Everything ran smoothly in the pack. Karl had alr
