Chapter 3

Author: Bella
He looked up slightly, revealing fierce, bloodthirsty eyes.

I remembered at that night when I opened the door, his wolf sprang at me, maw wide: its fangs sank into my throat like silver daggers, while claws ripped through flesh to grasp my beating heart.

I tasted blood and something else… the coldness of its feral intent.

Karl hit those eyes and his temples suddenly jumped, "Is that rogue wolf?"

Andrew nodded, "You are right. He has been working cases for years and I've never seen anyone more brutal. Not just burglary but murder."

The rogue wolf's just-as-grim sight sank slightly as he met Karl's.

What kind of look was that on his face? I probably guessed.

In my bedroom, there was a mateship picture of Karl and I hanging, and he'd glanced at it when he'd burglarized. This was why he recognized Karl.

"Karl, what's wrong?" Andrew asked and signaled the warriors to take the rogue wolf away.

"Did he kill anyone else? How many?"

"So far, based on what's been reported, two clans have been burglarized by him, so he's killed two."

Karl was relieved.

"I'm afraid there are others who have been murdered, but we haven't received a report yet, and maybe the ones who live alone and have been murdered for a couple of days, no one knows about it."

Karl's newly relieved nerves abruptly tensed up again.

Andrew could see that something was wrong with Karl, who had always been calm in his eyes.

"I heard from Steven that you and Julie have been going cold turkey lately. You haven't set paw on your den in weeks"

Karl was a little annoyed and didn't answer.

"Danielle left you to go improve her useless emotional mastery skills across other packs when the Bloodmoon pack hit ours. We were suffering from the enemy on our back, and when it was the hardest time.

She didn't make a single mindlink to care about you.

It was Julie who didn't ask for anything, accompanied you by your side. Harming Julie for Danielle? It's not worth it."

Karl lowered his head and felt unhappy.

They were about to go upstairs.

Karl's phone rang, he took it out, it was from our den warden.

On weekdays, the den warden only contacted me and basically never contacted Karl.

They should have contacted me before this call.

"Hello."

"Alpha Karl, are you at your den? The teller at the Luna's Hearth Department Store, sending the cleaned moon watch over, and he hasn't been able to get through to Luna Julie."

Karl's temples suddenly and vaguely jumped, "Couldn't you get through to her either?"

"No, we were right in front of your den and no one answered the door when we knocked.

Funny, actually, you know, I haven't spotted you and Luna Julie anywhere lately. Everything okay?"

Karl's heart suddenly beat faster.

He hadn't been to our den recently, it's normal for the den warden to not have seen him, but I didn't come to work and should be at our den, so how could the den warden not have seen me?

I had to purchase groceries once every three days at the latest on weekdays.

"Are you sure, you haven't seen Julie go out more than a week?"

"No, Alpha Karl."

My wolf floated in the air, looking at Karl just as close as I could.

He was suddenly a little unsteady on his feet in general.

On the other end, the den warden suddenly made a startled noise.

"Huh, the door to your den, seems to have broken a corner? It's the best security door, it weighs a hundred kilograms, why is the corner rolled?"

I remembered this detail: there was a knock on the door, saying that something had been delivered.

I thought that it was Karl's moon watch that had been washed and opened the door to get it.

Only as soon as I opened the door, the man in the delivery suit, raised his hand and sprayed silver dust at me, and with a poisoned dagger in his hand, he pressed it against the door to force his way in.

He shifted into a strong wolf instantly. His force was too great, I want to close the door but I could not, I also get numb and cannot make a sound under the effect of the silver dust.

As soon as I tried to call up my wolf and shoot a mind-link to Karl, the rogue wolf had already caught up with me and drove the poisoned dagger into my flesh.

I was disabled to do either.

I could clearly see that Karl's hand holding the phone was trembling.

A cold sweat also broke out on his forehead.

"What do you mean, the door is broken?"

I didn't go to work without taking any leave of absence these days.

In the past, no matter how angry I was, I wouldn't have gone more than three days before I took the initiative to mindlink Karl.

I had never been this out of line.

Karl seemed to finally realize something was wrong.

"Yes, Alpha Karl, are you at the Pack Headquarters? Why don't you grab a trip back, I feel something is wrong."

As Karl's wolf surged, its eyes bled into crimson, and the tendons along its neck rippled like snakes: each pulse of blood got visible through the thinning fur.

"What's the matter, Karl?" Andrew looked at Karl who was so out of sorts and also felt his back dipping in a cold sweat.

Without say anything, Karl rushed straight out of the Nightwatch Division.

"What the hell was said on the phone? You forget to take the tarts." Andrew came out after him.

"No. I need to go." Karl got in his car, started it up, and he wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.

"Karl, tell me what's going on?"

"Something may have happened at my den..." Karl moved his hands.

"Something happened? Property or Julie?"

It was both property and Julie. Karl didn't dare answer anymore.

When he stepped on the gas, he drove out of the parking lot gates and drove at a rapid pace to our den.

My wolf floated in the air, watching the car that raced far away.

Karl was finally going to know the news of my death, he looks nervous and afraid.

But I was dead, my life stopped forever.

The next morning when he woke, I saw he'd been clutching a tiny bone whistle all night. I froze cause this was the one I'd bought for our pup, and it was put in the nursery. After the pack hospital confirmed the pregnancy, I passed a pack toy shop and grabbed this bone whistle that made bird sounds. I wanted to buy more, but Karl stopped me and said it was too early, so I only bought this one then. We lost our pup soon and it was too fast to decorate the pup room and too fast to buy him toys. Karl set the whistle down and headed to the bathroom. Ten minutes later, he was out the door for Pack Headquarters. Watching his gradually emaciated figure, I felt sad."Autumn came and the whole streets yellowed with flying leaves. Danielle dropped her resignation and left the Pack Headquarters. Carlos's legs got better every day, so Karl asked him back to work. Thinking Karl was swamped, Carlos agreed, but after a month, he was confused. Everything ran smoothly in the pack. Karl had alr

After Steven left, Karl pulled out his phone and dialed. I watched him nervously because except for moonlight, the place was pitch-black and reeked of blood. Good thing I was only my wolf spirit. Finally, someone picked up, "Karl! What the hell? You didn't tell me Julie died?" It was his older brother, Carlos. Six years ago, he'd be the alpha of our pack. Back then, infighting inside the pack was brutal and lots of upper class had been bought off by the Bloodmoon Pack. When Carlos went out of the pack to supervise a hunting project, he got ambushed in a parking garage by a fierce rogue wolf paid by Bloodmoon to take him out. The result was that Carlos managed to escape, but his legs got messed up badly. He'd been in a coma for a year, and when he woke, he couldn't walk. Karl had to quit the Police Training Academy to save the pack from collapse while his brother bounced between twenty surgeries in the Temple of the Moon.""How couldn't I even come to her funeral? Julie is so impo

Karl stepped out of the werewolf prison, and there stood his mom, her cane already swinging to smack Karl hard."Do you want me to die? We already lost Julie as family and are you trying to make me lose you too?" she snapped, "Starving yourself in there? You wanna die on me?Karl caught her arm but grinned."Ma, who's feeding you lies? Tell me, I'll knock them out cold. I'd be a corpse by now if not eating."His mother shut up quickly, but her eyes lingered on his gaunt frame, worry creasing her face. Karl was still talking and smiling to make her let out a breath. He guided her toward the lobby doors of the Nightwatch Division, ignoring Danielle like she was a ghost. Danielle waited till they'd passed her by before her voice cracked."Karl, didn't you see me? I've been here since dawn."He froze and turned, "Danielle, why are you here? You're not my mate nor my family. Who the hell are you to come see me?"Her face went white, fingers digging into her palms, "Karl, are you mad at me

Tried to mindlinked you at once and almost made it.Oh, did you see her pawprint on the wall? I used deadly silver dust on her, otherwise, she would successfully shift completely. So pathetic, right? She has the best combat skills among the ones I've killed, too. Even a powerful soldier like me had trouble holding her down. She fought so hard… but what could a she-wolf do? The next day.The cops wrapped up their investigation, and it turned out I was killed by that rogue wolf wolf Leon they nabbed a couple of days back. Leon was careful, but when I fought back, I clawed some skin off his wolf. The pack forensic doctor matched the skin and hair under my nails to his DNA—bang on.Andrew grilled Leon for two straight days and nights without sleep. Leon finally cracked and spilled all his crimes: breaking into Clawkeep, offing me, then stealing stuff. After the funeral, everyone left, but Karl sat by my grave for ages. Sun was shining nice, so he leaned against the gravestone and closed his eyes like he was dozing off, but when he "slept," tears leaked from the corners of his eyes. Steven saw that and turned away, went to wait by the car down the hill.As the sun was setting, Karl stood up, picked some wildflowers nearby, tied them into a bunch, and laid them at my grave, then he knelt and kissed the cold gravestone."Julie, wait for me."I floated there
