Chapter 2

Author: Bella
The elevator doors opened and Steven was already waiting for Karl.

"Meeting starts in three minutes?"

Steven nodded.

Karl walked by and turned back, "What else?"

"Chief healer hasn't been in the office for a few days, and there are a few documents that are stuck in her process."

The chief healer was me. The pack once faced a brutal onslaught from our rival, Bloodmoon Pack, and I was the one who helped Karl with everything I had.

Karl later gave me the title of chief healer in the pack.

Karl frowned hard.

"Alpha Karl, my mate and I argue too, but I always give in. She comes around as soon as I sweet-talk her. The mate bond between you runs deep in the pack, if you buy her a bouquet of flowers and go back, she will surely immediately lose her temper."

Steven finished talking and was really hoping things would lighten up between us as mates.

Karl's cold expression, however, did not ease up at all, "Just mind your own business."

"What about the file stuck at the chief healer's?"

Karl suddenly kicked the door hard and snapped, "Bring the files to me."

"Who the hell does she think she is? Does she really think our pack can't turn around without her?"

Steven trembled in fear, no longer dare to say a word.

Karl walked into the office, undid his tie and flung it aside.

Crossing his arms to calm down for a few dozen seconds, he then sat down to start the werewolf council meeting.

After the meeting, Karl again slept at the office.

Behind his office, there was a fully furnished bedroom for him.

In the late afternoon, Steven knocked on the door.

"Beta Andrew told me that he brought two boxes of moon-silver berry tart on his last pack trip. He's been busy lately and he asked me to go pick them up for you."

Moon-silver berry tarts were Karl's mother's favorite, Karl's pack brothers all knew that.

Steven said he would go fetch them.

Karl's hand holding the pen paused for a split second,

"No, I'll go myself. It's just right to send the tart to the Moonstone Manor at night."

Steven nodded and added, "You can go there with Luna Julie, your mother has always adored her."

Karl gave Steven a deep, meaningful stare, and Steven immediately stopped talking.

"Last night's warning wasn't enough? It seems you are tired of being my gamma anymore, or do you want to be a servant in my den? You are so interested in my private life?"

"Alpha Karl, I spoke too much and I won't dare to do it again." Steven bowed his head deeply in apology.

I looked at Steven. Just a year ago, his wolf had been torn and bleeding, a mangled mess barely clinging to life after being attacked by rogue wolves.

I poured every ounce of my power into dragging him back from the void.

Then he had been trying to help me all the time.

After the meeting in the afternoon, Karl drove to the Nightwatch Division.

There was no one in the Nightwatch Division who didn't recognize him.

Karl's qualifications are even higher than Andrew's.

If he hadn't been recalled by his clan when he graduated from the Werewolf Police Training Academy, he would still be in the police department, working side by side with Andrew.

During his internship, Karl worked with Andrew on a border drug trafficking case.

The old commander at the time, repeatedly requested Karl to stay in the police force.

But he chose to reclaim his birthright, returning to the pack as its new Alpha.

Andrew rushed out to welcome Karl, "Karl."

As if he'd just come out of the interrogation room, Andrew's eyes were red and bloodshot.

"Why don't you sit in my office for a while?"

"Been busy lately? "

Andrew nodded, "You heard about the spate of burglary and murder cases in the pack, last night we laid a dragnet and finally caught this rogue wolf."

"It turns out to have worked as a mercenary, his wolf is even stronger than ours, and he bites the bullet and doesn't spit out half a word even after he's arrested and forced to amputate a limb."

"Been a mercenary?" Karl frowned.

At that moment the hall suddenly stirred.

The Nightwatch agent kicked the rogue wolf's flank, "Show your belly, mutt before I rip out your throat."

A large wolf was escorted from the interrogation room, so Karl and Andrew sidestepped him.

I had frozen! This was the rogue wolf who had killed me.

  • Where Are You, My Mate?   Chapter 9

The next morning when he woke, I saw he'd been clutching a tiny bone whistle all night. I froze cause this was the one I'd bought for our pup, and it was put in the nursery. After the pack hospital confirmed the pregnancy, I passed a pack toy shop and grabbed this bone whistle that made bird sounds. I wanted to buy more, but Karl stopped me and said it was too early, so I only bought this one then. We lost our pup soon and it was too fast to decorate the pup room and too fast to buy him toys. Karl set the whistle down and headed to the bathroom. Ten minutes later, he was out the door for Pack Headquarters. Watching his gradually emaciated figure, I felt sad."Autumn came and the whole streets yellowed with flying leaves. Danielle dropped her resignation and left the Pack Headquarters. Carlos's legs got better every day, so Karl asked him back to work. Thinking Karl was swamped, Carlos agreed, but after a month, he was confused. Everything ran smoothly in the pack. Karl had alr

After Steven left, Karl pulled out his phone and dialed. I watched him nervously because except for moonlight, the place was pitch-black and reeked of blood. Good thing I was only my wolf spirit. Finally, someone picked up, "Karl! What the hell? You didn't tell me Julie died?" It was his older brother, Carlos. Six years ago, he'd be the alpha of our pack. Back then, infighting inside the pack was brutal and lots of upper class had been bought off by the Bloodmoon Pack. When Carlos went out of the pack to supervise a hunting project, he got ambushed in a parking garage by a fierce rogue wolf paid by Bloodmoon to take him out. The result was that Carlos managed to escape, but his legs got messed up badly. He'd been in a coma for a year, and when he woke, he couldn't walk. Karl had to quit the Police Training Academy to save the pack from collapse while his brother bounced between twenty surgeries in the Temple of the Moon.""How couldn't I even come to her funeral? Julie is so impo

  • Where Are You, My Mate?   Chapter 7

Karl stepped out of the werewolf prison, and there stood his mom, her cane already swinging to smack Karl hard."Do you want me to die? We already lost Julie as family and are you trying to make me lose you too?" she snapped, "Starving yourself in there? You wanna die on me?Karl caught her arm but grinned."Ma, who's feeding you lies? Tell me, I'll knock them out cold. I'd be a corpse by now if not eating."His mother shut up quickly, but her eyes lingered on his gaunt frame, worry creasing her face. Karl was still talking and smiling to make her let out a breath. He guided her toward the lobby doors of the Nightwatch Division, ignoring Danielle like she was a ghost. Danielle waited till they'd passed her by before her voice cracked."Karl, didn't you see me? I've been here since dawn."He froze and turned, "Danielle, why are you here? You're not my mate nor my family. Who the hell are you to come see me?"Her face went white, fingers digging into her palms, "Karl, are you mad at me

Leon was still in the pack interrogation room and wasn’t moved by the cop warriors. He looked up as Karl barreled in.Karl's fist was already flying toward his temple before his head even lifted.Barely missing his skull with each blow, Karl was out for blood.Leon took the hits, dazed and bloodied, but when he tilted his head toward the light, he grinned darkly."I know who you are, the mate of Luna Julie who died on September fifth."Karl's guts twisted with rage."Hmm, she was smart, you know? Tried to mindlinked you at once and almost made it.Oh, did you see her pawprint on the wall? I used deadly silver dust on her, otherwise, she would successfully shift completely. So pathetic, right? She has the best combat skills among the ones I've killed, too. Even a powerful soldier like me had trouble holding her down. She fought so hard… but what could a she-wolf do? A few self-defense moves against a king of war?Her struggle got me excited, so I carved her up while she still breathed.

  • Where Are You, My Mate?   Chapter 5

The next day.The cops wrapped up their investigation, and it turned out I was killed by that rogue wolf wolf Leon they nabbed a couple of days back. Leon was careful, but when I fought back, I clawed some skin off his wolf. The pack forensic doctor matched the skin and hair under my nails to his DNA—bang on.Andrew grilled Leon for two straight days and nights without sleep. Leon finally cracked and spilled all his crimes: breaking into Clawkeep, offing me, then stealing stuff. After the funeral, everyone left, but Karl sat by my grave for ages. Sun was shining nice, so he leaned against the gravestone and closed his eyes like he was dozing off, but when he "slept," tears leaked from the corners of his eyes. Steven saw that and turned away, went to wait by the car down the hill.As the sun was setting, Karl stood up, picked some wildflowers nearby, tied them into a bunch, and laid them at my grave, then he knelt and kissed the cold gravestone."Julie, wait for me."I floated there

An hour's drive, Karl only spent twenty minutes getting back."Alpha Karl."The warden was waiting at the entrance of the den.Karl didn't bother to park and just threw his car at the entrance of Clawkeep. The warden followed behind him."I've asked the two neighbors next door, and they say they haven't seen Luna Julie recently," the warden said.Karl could feel the wolf within him stir, its presence thrumming beneath his skin. His fingers curled into trembling fists, nails digging crescents into his palms as he fought to maintain control. "He rushed to the doorstep, but just as his fingers were about to open the door, he hesitated. It felt as if he'd lost his courage entirely.Karl hadn't slept well these days and he didn't sleep a wink all night. Just now, when he finished the meeting, it was three in the morning. Now, his face was pale and frightening. He had also grown a bit of a beard around his jawline."Karl, stay calm, there's always what needs to be faced." his wolf was more
