After Logan asked if everything was alright, I nodded quickly.“Yeah,” I lied, forcing a small smile. “Everything’s fine.”He looked like he didn’t believe me, but he didn’t push.“I was thinking,” I said, changing the subject, “I’ll cook something special for dinner tonight. Lily likes dumplings. So, how about some homemade dumplings?”Logan smiled faintly. “I love them.” His gaze lingered on my face for a while. From beside me, Lily cheered, bouncing on her heels.“Yes! Dumpling night! Can we have the spicy sauce too?”I laughed. “Only a little, or your tongue will catch fire.”She giggled. “I’ll still eat it!”That evening, I cooked while Lily sat at the counter, swinging her legs and chatting about preschool. Logan helped me fold the dumplings, surprisingly skilled with his hands. It is such a shock to see him being so domesticated sometimes. Who would believe that he is the CEO of the multi- billion company? I am sure his subordinates would never believe this.“I made a flower!”

He took a step toward me, and my whole body tensed. My pulse roared in my ears as he reached out and grabbed my wrist. His skin was cold, his grip rough and possessive. I felt a wave of disgust wash over me as his fingers tightened around my bone. I jerked away, trying to twist free, but he held on tight.“You don’t get to act brave,” he whispered, his breath hot against my ear, laced with bitterness. “You don’t get to talk unless I say so.”“You’re hurting him!” I shouted, my voice cracking as I struggled against him. My heart thundered in my chest. “He’s just a child! Why drag him into your mess with Joey?”Kane’s eyes narrowed like a predator’s. “Because Joey dragged me into hers first.”Kane Delacroix. I remembered him now—his name etched into headlines, his fall from grace whispered about in high circles. The disgraced heir to a shipping empire, once groomed to inherit billions, now nothing more than a shadow of who he was. The media said he lost everything after a scandal in Par

I went downstairs and found Logan in the kitchen, sipping his coffee and flipping through a folder. His tie was half-done, and his hair looked like he’d just run his fingers through it a few times. He looked up when he saw me, eyes immediately narrowing.“What’s wrong?”I didn’t waste time. “Jordan has a fever. Sebastian called. He said it’s high, and the doctors don’t know what’s causing it.”Logan stood instantly, setting his coffee down. “I’ll drive you.”“No,” I said quickly, stepping back. “You don’t have to. I’ll manage.”“Haley,” he said, voice firm but kind, “You don’t have to do this alone.”“It’s not that,” I replied, wrapping my arms around myself. “It’s just… I can’t show up there with you. That will only make things more complicated.”He looked at me for a moment, then nodded slowly. “Alright. I’ll have my driver take you. He’s already out front.”“Thank you,” I whispered.Logan reached into his coat and pulled out a scarf. “It’s cold. You forgot yours.”He wrapped it arou

The ride back from the store was quiet.Lily sat in the back seat humming, playing with the small plush toy we had picked up. Logan drove, his eyes fixed on the road. I sat beside him, hands in my lap, still feeling the sting from earlier—both the physical one on my cheek and the heavier one I couldn’t name.I couldn’t bring myself to look at him.Every time I tried, something inside me clenched. Maybe it was guilt, or maybe fear. He had stepped in for me, defended me in front of someone from my past—and not mildly, but fiercely. Like I mattered. Like I wasn’t invisible. But I hadn’t thanked him properly. I hadn’t even talked to him.Maybe I should. I decided I would after dinner. When we got home, Lily went off to watch cartoons, and I helped Logan plate dinner. The air between us was normal on the surface—small pleasantries, little smiles—but under it was a tension that hadn’t been there before. Like we were both waiting for the other to say something first.Halfway through the meal

My mother’s call came right on time—early evening, just as I was pouring myself a drink. Her voice was sharp and cold, like always.“If Haley’s moved on so quickly, perhaps you should start dating too,” she said. “There’s no point clinging to something that’s clearly over—”I didn’t let her finish. I just hung up.No goodbye. No arguing. Just silence. She didn’t deserve anything more than that. I stared at the glass of whiskey in my hand, still untouched. My grip around it tightened until my knuckles turned white. She didn’t understand. No one did.It wasn’t about Haley “moving on.” It wasn’t about her finding peace or someone new. It was about what she left behind. Me. Jordan. This house. Our life. And now Joey. She disappeared again. No warning. No goodbye. No texts or calls. Just a note. A damn note, like the last time she left me. It was like I didn’t matter at all. Like I was something she tried, then tossed away.I sat down on the edge of the couch, breathing hard. My anger felt
