VESPER GREY LYSAN POV My body jerked, a cry tearing out of my lungs as my eyes flew open. Then I glanced around the darkened room, my body frozen while my heartbeat thundered in my ears. The nightmare had felt so real, my neck still throbbed from it.God damn it, even in my dreams, I couldn't escape Zevran.I let out a rough breath, then pressed my fingers into my temples to try and ease the pounding in my skull. It worked. The throbbing dulled with every stroke and my heart rate slowly went back to normal."Stop being so paranoid Vesper. He can't get you here when he's in custody," I told myself, closing my eyes and letting my hands drop to my side. But why did something feel so off? My eyes snapped open, the eerie quietness making a chill run down my spine.Maybe it was because Zevran had broken in before but I couldn't shake off the feeling that someone was watching me.I forced myself to sit up, even as my whole body protested the action. "Ugh, this won't do at all," I groaned,

CAMILLE SILVANE POV "I think Zevran will kill Cyran regardless of what you say. He says he can't wait two weeks and that you should set up an executive meeting." I reported, my grip tightening on the phone. It was quiet on the other end of the line, but I could hear his thoughts spiraling, his fear of the unknown spilling through."We can't allow that to happen," Silvane finally answered, a trembling edge to his voice. "Making enemies with the Lysanth group is the same thing as crippling our empire. Ilvane already betrayed them in the past. We can't afford more bad blood after striving so hard to mend the rift. Besides, as far as shipping and weapon routes are concerned, no other syndicate comes close to the Lysanth group.""You are right Master, but I'm afraid that is not going to stop Zevran. He's made his decision, and you know how stubborn he can be. If you allow an executive meeting to be held, he's going to convince them all to do what he wants. The executives might oppose his

VESPER GREY LYSAN POVZevran's eyes burned into me, scorching in their intensity, then, without a word, he collapsed forward, his eyes fluttering shut as he passed out.I froze as his weight crashed into me, his warmth sinking into my bones. What was going on?A few seconds passed in absolute silence, then I tapped on his arm, my fingers hesitant, as if they thought he would wake up at any second. There was no response from him.My heart skidded to a stop, my eyes widening as alarm bells flared in my head. Was he...?"Zevran," I called, shaking him gently. "Zevran?" His soft breath ghosted against my neck, his weight pressing even more into me.I heaved in relief. He was alive. That was good.If he'd died, getting rid of his body would have been a gruesome nightmare."You only exist to torment me, Zevran, don't you? I just want you out of my life so why can't you disappear already?" I groaned, exhaustion folding over me as my head collapsed onto the bed.I lay unmoving for a few sec

CYRAN KAELROS POV "You shouldn't have called the cops on Zevran Ilvane. That was a foolish thing to do, and you know it," Father snapped, his brows furrowed. My hands clenched into fists, a muscle jerking in my temple as hate curled like smoke in my chest. "So I was supposed to stand there and let him disrespect her? Right in front of me? Is that what the Lysanth stands for? To take disrespect?" I asked, then arched a brow, my gaze probing into those of the man in front of me. "Are you afraid of him, Father?""Of course not!" he thundered, his eyes blazing. "All I am saying is that there are other ways to resolve a misunderstanding. You shouldn't have let your emotions get the best of you...""—I promised Vesper that I would protect her," I gritted out, cutting him off. "If I'd just stood by and done nothing, what kind of man would that make me. Zevran has no claim to her, so why should I just stand by and let him do whatever he wants?"Father let out a sigh, then stood up, the scar

ZEVRAN ILVANE POV Vesper was gone. And knowing that tore my heart into a million pieces.Even now, I could still see her eyes and the pain that had lingered in them as she stared up at me like a monster that had come for her soul Taking over from Zevroth had been a war—a war I had barely won—and still I accomplished nothing. My jaw tightened, the pulsing ache in my chest spreading like fire through my veins. Why did it always have to be like this? Why was I always abandoned by anyone I cared about? Why was it so hard to love me?I leaned over the sink, hands braced tight enough for the porcelain to creak beneath my grip, my knuckles white. Bloodless. My chest was a pit. A hollowed-out thing where hope used to fester. I couldn't breathe, and just the thought of not knowing where she was made it worse. How could she leave me? After everything."You shouldn't have taken over." Zevroth sneered, his voice slithering up my spine like shards of broken glass. I didn't have to look up to k

VESPER GREY LYSAN POV I glanced away from the mirror as Cyran stepped into the room, the dark look on his face making me tense up."What's wrong?" I asked. Did Zevran find us already? It's already been a week of silence, so I wouldn't be surprised."There was a fire at the company."His words hit me like a grenade. I blinked, shaking my head, my brows furrowing. "What do you mean there was a fire at the company" I stood up, my hands clenching into fists. "Is anyone hurt. Was it serious?" I asked, my heart pounding like a sledgehammer. He remained quiet. "Talk to me, damn it!" I yelled, fear and panic clawing at my chest, and making it difficult to breathe.Cyran suddenly took hold of my shoulder. My eyes flew to his, but I couldn't quite make him out. Why the hell was everything getting dim all of a sudden?"Hey! Hey! Hey, breathe. Breathe, Vesper," he yelled, his voice piercing through the ringing in my ear, and that was when I realized I was holding my breath.I let go, blowing o

VESPER GREY LYSAN POV I stuffed my bag into the trunk of my car, then glanced back at the house. Cyran stood in front of the door watching me, the look on his face unreadable. Was I making a mistake? Getting revenge on Zevran all on my own would be hard wouldn't it? Especially now that I had nothing. No, Cyran already agreed to let me go. Going back now would just confuse him further. And I've already done that to him a lot of times. I blew out a breath, yanked open the door, and made to get in when my phone rang. It was Selene. Why the hell was she calling all of a sudden? I watched it ring, holding onto my resolve not to answer her call, but as it ended, an idea hit me, the sharp spark of it making my eyes widen. With my heart pounding and my hands trembling, I raised my phone and dialed Selene's number. She answered on the first ring."For a second there, I thought you were really serious about cutting me off, but since you're calling me back like this, does that mean you've cha

VESPER GREY LYSAN POV Waking up bound up in chains wasn't surprising or unfamiliar. I'd been bound a lot of times. The first time was by my mom, then Ilvane, and then the asylum... and now, it was Cyran. He sat at the edge of my bed, his back straight and rigid. He was shirtless, an almost burned-out cigarette held between his fore and middle finger.Did Cyran smoke, or was this a new habit he'd picked up?I could see his back muscle rippling with tension, his jaw clenching and unclenching as if he was contemplating something horrible.I moved, the chain making noises. He flinched at the sound, but didn't turn to face. The cigarette dropped from his hand.I pulled myself up, then glanced around the room.Everything looked the same. The bag I had packed earlier lay empty on the floor, and when I glanced at the stool beside it, I noticed some files on the table. What could it be? A contract? Was he going to force me to marry him?"Do you really have to go this far?" I asked, my vo

VESPER GREY LYSAN POV "You look so beautiful, Vesper. Cyran is so lucky to have you," the lady helping me with my dress said, her eyes crinkling at the edges as she smiled.I gazed at my reflection in the mirror. Why was everyone always so happy except for me?"Thank you, Nina." "Oh, but you don't need to thank me at all, Miss Vesper, I'm just stating a fact. You're the prettiest bride I've dressed so far.""Really?" I asked, glancing down at my body. She was right, the dress was beautiful. It also looked like it cost a fortune. When had Cyran prepared it, and how did he know my size?"Yes, and I'm actually dying to know the love story between you and Cyran, but you won't say, will you? You both are so secretive," she said, pouting.I forced a smile, shaking my head. She let out a sigh. "Fine! Keep it to yourself. I'm going to find out sooner or later anyway," she said, then glanced around the room. "Oh, let me get you the bouquet," she said and ran off before I could stop her.I

ZEVRAN ILVANE POVThe door opened, Vesper standing like a fairytale come to life in the doorway, her eyes so wide in shock as they collided with mine, I could make out the swirls in her mercury gray iris. So, so ethereal. Too bad all I felt right now was rage.Rage that she'd been about to marry another man who wasn't me. Rage that it had taken me this long to find her.It was partly Silvane's fault, and partly my fault for not thinking that he could stab me in the back... He'd spoken to the directors behind my back, and unanimously, they'd voted that I couldn't hurt Cyran or jeopardize VIRELUX, and because of that, I'd spent precious days apart from Vesper, hunting them down and getting them to take back their vote. And since I didn't need enemies within my own organization, I hadn't broken their bones like I first intended, instead, I offered them things I knew they desired, and soon another meeting was held, and my decision stood.Infiltrating the Lysanth group also hadn't been eas
