Lucy’s POVThe air stung my skin like wicked thorns. My breath came in short, hard gasps. I could taste the cold in my mouth.“Lucy, breathe,” Xandra whispered beside me. Her teeth were shaking. Her lips were almost blue.“I’m trying,” I said, my voice shaking as much as my body. The early snow beneath our shoes crunched with every step. The wind blew against our faces and cut through our clothes like it wanted to rip us open. I could feel my fingers going numb.“We need shelter,” I whispered. My throat burned when I spoke.Xandra nodded. “We just have to keep moving.”But my legs felt heavy. My body felt weak. I tried to take another step, but my foot slid on the icy ground. I fell hard on my knees. A sharp pain ran up my legs.“Lucy!” Xandra dropped beside me. Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely hold me.“I’m fine,” I lied. I wasn’t. Every part of me hurt. My head spun.“You’re freezing,” she said.I looked at her face. Her skin was pale. She looked worse than me.
