Not him again

~ELENA~I don't mean to run. I just need air, anything but the suffocating hush that follows Alessandro's heels as he leaves. My feet carry me across the marble without thinking, past frozen faces and scattered masks, until the heavy doors of the ballroom slide open and the cool night air of the terrace wraps around me like a promise.I hear footsteps behind me but I don't turn to know who that is. I don't even care about anyone or anything right now.I press my palms to the cold stone balustrade and try to breathe. The city lights of Florence scatter beneath me, beautiful and indifferent. For a few seconds I let the music drift up from the hall like a distant heartbeat, and I lean my forehead on the balustrade as if that will hold me together.“Elena?” Valentina's voice, bright and breathless, pulls me back from the edge. She appears at the terrace door with Gianna at her elbow.Valentina is trying to smile even though her brow is creased with worry, Gi

Alessandro is dead??

~ELENA~The lights flicker once….then go out. Everywhere suddenly turns dark.Just then I feel him close to me.“Stay away from me” I cry out in fear.He grabs my arm and I gasp loudly.“What do you want from me, Alessandro?? Please just let me be” I cry out.“I want you. You're mine and you'll always be mine” he says.Where are my step brothers??I don't even come to the bathroom with my phone. Damnit!!!“I never should have dated you. I never should have crossed paths with you. I didn't even know your father is a Mafia Lord. Can you just let me be, please??” I beg desperately praying that the lights get fucking turned on.I can feel his grip on my arm tighten at my words and he grabs my jaw forcefully and tries to kiss me.I push him away with a strength I don't know I have and he grabs my jaw again, more roughly this time, holds me in a way I can't even move and slams his lips on mine. His kiss is an angry, possessive and obsessive one. And then I feel it…..

Alessandro is really dead

~ELENA~I continue to stare at Alessandro's lifeless body, still in shock.I suddenly can’t breathe again. The world around me is a blur. Alessandro’s lifeless body lies sprawled across the floor, his eyes frozen wide open, staring at nothing. My fingers shake uncontrollably. I clutch my chest as if that will steady my racing heart, but it doesn’t. I can still feel him …..his hands, his breath, his voice echoing in my ears.Memories of our time together starts to flood my head.I stare at the lifeless body of my first love…..the man I was so much in love with. The first man to be intimate with. The first man I explored with.I remember the happy moments, the laughters we share, and painfully and sadly, I remember the terrible moments we had. Those times when he's brutal and abusive to me.Now, he's lying dead on the floor. Alessandro is really dead. And it's because of me.“Nooooo!” I scream out in guilt and pain as tears roll down my cheeks. He wouldn't h

The police are here

~ELENA~I don't even know when we get home. I just feel someone pulling me out of the car and leading me to my room.I feel numb. My body, my senses, my mind….they all feel numb. The door to my room opens and I am led inside.“Take your bath and rest. We'll come to check up on you later” Riccardo says, his voice very soft and caring. He's back to being all sweet and caring with me….but he's the same person that fucking killed a person without regrets earlier. How can someone have two personalities??I don't even say anything….I just walk to my bed and lie on it, with my eyes fixed to the ceiling.I notice Riccardo lingering a little in my room, and then he's gone.******Morning comes gray and heavy, filtering through the curtains like smoke. I am still in my party dress as I didn't have the energy to change.I haven't slept. The sound of Alessandro’s painful groan when he was stabbed keeps replaying in my head… the widened eyes, the thud when he collapse

We didn't kill him

~ELENA~The minutes crawl by after Riccardo leaves. I can still hear the faint echo of his words…“learn to live with it.” How can I? How do you live with something like that?I stand up from my bed and walk to the dressing mirror to look at myself. My reflection in the mirror looks like a stranger. My eyes are bloodshot, my hair a tangled mess, mascara streaking my face like dried tears that never stopped falling. I walk to the bathroom and splash water on my face, but it doesn’t wash away the heaviness sitting in my chest.I keep on washing my face till I finally look better a bit. I walk to the wardrobe, pick up a big top and bum shorts and change into it.When I step out of the room, the house feels different. Quieter. Tighter. Even the air seems to listen.Downstairs, Vincenzo and Nico are already waiting in the living room, dressed in black joggers and singlets. Riccardo joins them a minute later, slipping his phone into his pocket.Vincenzo glances

Vengeance

Somewhere across Florence…A crystal tumbler of whiskey shatters against the wall. Two men are kneeling and begging for their lives.“What did you just say?” roars Don Luciano Bianchi, his voice shaking the windows of his office. The two men flinch, trembling and shivering at once. One of them is sweating profusely. “Don Bianchi… It wasn't our fault. We tried to protect him….”“You tried?” Luciano’s voice thunders, and he slams his hands on the desk. “You tried? My son, my only son, is lying in a pool of his own blood, and you come crawling here to tell me you tried?”One of the men starts to speak again, but Luciano cuts him off with a deadly calm.“Who killed him? Who dared to kill my only child??”His eyes speak of vengeance, fury, and unshed tears. He's trying so hard not to let the tears spill. The second man swallows hard. “The Romano brothers, Don. They had a fight with Sir Alessandro. It was in front of the girl. Elena” he explains.“Elena? Elena ... .the girl Alessandro wou

No mercy for my son's killers.

Luciano commands his men to come inside the room. They come in and he sees how the other men tremble in fear.Good!!Today is the day those bastards that let his son die will wish that they're newer born.Luciano straightens, but his hands tremble for a beat…. not from anger, he reassures himself, but from a hurt that has nothing to do with rage. He closes his eyes for the briefest moment and sees Alessandro at five, pencil smudges on his small fingers, the crooked toothy grin when he showed his father a drawing of the villa with a stick-figure family. The memory hits like a stone. Luciano breathes out slowly, forcing himself into command.“Take them downstairs. To the torture room” he tells his men.The men are dragged from the office, their pleas echoing through the hallways of the Bianchi villa. Luciano follows slowly, each step deliberate, the weight of vengeance steady in his chest. He thinks of a small pair of shoes by Alessandro’s bedroom door, the way the boy used to leave

Hell is about to be set loose

~ELENA~After the police leave, I return to my room to take my bath after Riccardo said he's going to cook a decent meal.I stay under the shower in the bathroom for long, hoping the water washes away every thought of Alessandro, every guilt.I want to blame someone but I don't know who to blame.Me?? Alessandro?? My stepbrothers??I can't blame my stepbrothers because I know they're just protecting me. They came to my rescue. And I'm quite sure they didn't plan to kill him. Things just escalated so fast. The water does nothing to wash off every feeling I have, so I turn off the shower and walk out of the bathroom.I walk to my closet and pick a flare gown. I wear my panties then wear the gown.I sit on the edge of my bed, still replaying the incident that happened. My head throbs and my heart feels worse. My phone and bag are gone…..lost somewhere between the chaos of last night’s party.I need my phone. I need to know how things are online. Then I hear a

The interrogation room

~ELENA~The front door burst open and my step father walks in angrily. My mother follows him inside, her eyes wide, her face pale. She clutches her purse like it might keep her safe.“Where are they?” Lorenzo’s voice is sharp enough to slice through stone. As if my step brothers are aware that he's back or knows what is about to happen, they descend the stairs almost at the same time.“I want to see you all at the interrogation room. Now” Lorenzo says, his voice deadly but calm.He strides past me without a glance, his long black coat flaring behind him like a storm cloud. My chest tightens. He already knows.Minutes later, Nico, Vincenzo, and Riccardo and I walk into the questioning room. Their faces are blank, unreadable, but the air around them buzzes with tension.Lorenzo stands behind the long oak table, not sitting, his hands pressed flat on the surface. The chandelier light catches the silver in his hair, turning it to steel. My mother hovers quietly by

The night we leave Florence

~ELENA~I stand in front of my open suitcase, numb fingers folding clothes I don't even see. Every sound in the house feels heavier than usual ... .the ticking clock, the muffled footsteps, the creak of wood that had witnessed too many secrets.I try not to think. Not to think of my new school I'm going to miss because I'm going into hiding. I try not to think of my friends, Valentina and Gianna, that I may never see again as Lorenzo has forbidden us not to step into Florence until he permits. The question is….till when??I just wanted to start a new school and clear my head and be happy with my friends, but everything turned sour the moment I saw Alessandro in school and also the moment I saw Nico in school too.I throw a cloth inside my suitcase, frustration piling up. Why can't I just have a simple life?? It's always from one problem to another.I force myself not to think. Not about Lorenzo’s fury. Not about Alessandro's father's threat. Not about what would
