Wolf shifters, in particular, are even more hostile towards part-wolf hybrids. The twelve years I spent with my mother in her pack have done a good job of ravaging me inside. Twelve years of taunts—of being harassed while the adults watched or turned the other cheek—was enough to damage a child. And then to be exiled from the pack when it was proven that I could not shift was somehow worse.Even now, all these year later, that insecure child rears its head.Which is why I loathe wolf shifters. And fear them. However, despite my aversion to them, it seems that the Alpha might not feel the same way. Throughout the evening, I can feel his eyes lingering on me. What’s worse is my own reaction to him.Whenever I accidentally meet that predatory amber gaze, I feel this strange itching under my skin, and my normally sturdy grasp on my magic wavers. Is it because I’m attracted to him?I shake off the thought as soon as it flickers through my head because it sounds ridiculous. This man is not

Which makes this whole situation even worse because my magic is fluctuating with his close proximity to me. At this point, I don’t even have to guess anymore. He is the reason why my magic that shields my Lycan self has been so unstable lately.Whatever the reasoning may be, it can’t be good. However, Austin is in no mood to listen to me.But the minute he touches my skin, everything falls apart.I let out a gasp of pain and feel the magic dissipate. Exhaustion is a bitter enemy, and I slump in my position. But as soon as I do, I feel something move within me.For years, my whole life—in fact, the only aspect of my Lycan side that I have been able to access—is my speed and my healing ability. I have never felt my wolf even once. That was why my old pack threw me out, along with my mother. Because not only did I not have the ability to shift, I also had no connection to my wolf. But right now I can feel something inside me. It’s like another part of me, something wilder and more primit

I scoff, furious. “I didn’t come here to make a scene. I came here to tell you that I grew up in a wolf pack. I know that you cannot just reject your fated mate that easily. You must have a legitimate reason. Me, being who I am, can’t just be the only factor.”His face turns white as he looks over his shoulder. I follow his gaze, only to see that his pack mates have stopped working, staring at us in shock.I don’t care if they know. In fact, I prefer it. Did he really think he could keep me hidden like a dirty little secret? Bastard!“What have you done?” he snarls at me, giving me a little shake, and this time, I let electricity flow throw me, giving him a tiny jolt to remind him that I am not as weak as he thinks. He releases me with a growl.“Oh, I’m sorry,” I say, mockingly. “Were you planning to hide the fact that you have a fated mate out there from your packmates? Did I ruin your plan?”I can feel my anger controlling my mouth, but it’s either that or tears of pain and humiliat

This scene goes on for a few days, with Austin showing up at the bar almost every night and his packmates scattered around town. Fortunately, the ones I run into are polite to me, and there is no blatant hostility. They don’t approach me, but if there are any accidental run-ins, they seem to know who I am.The warlocks are still in town, which is probably why during one of my shifts, the mayor shows up.“The usual?”Mr. Hamrington nods, looking thoughtful.“Where’s the wife?”“Busy shopping.” He waves his hand distractedly. At closer inspection, Mr. Hamrington looks to be in his late fifties but with a very dapper appearance. He’s handsome in that salt-and-pepper way older men can be, wealth oozing from his clothes and accessories. He takes a sip of the drink I place in front of him before twirling the straw. “Too many Others here all of a sudden, don’t you think?’My hand stills on the cloth I’m using to wipe down the counter. My voice is light as I reply, “Saw a lot of warlocks rece

SelineMy first reaction is guilt when I see Austin standing there, waves of thunderous anger rolling off him.My second reaction is my own anger at the audacity he has to glare at me and Loyd. When I see his fists clench by his side, a part of me—a foolish, naive part of me—suddenly wonders if he is going to intervene. Will he finally look at me?However, that is not what happens.“Come on,” he says abruptly to the juveniles, who look both scared and relieved to see him. “Let’s go.”My jaw clenches as his disgust of me shows on his face. However, I have a duty to fulfill, and there’s no way I’m letting Austin get in the way of that.I step in his path, “Before running away, you should know that they caused damage to the establishment. I need your contact information and their ages. If any of them are or above eighteen, local authorities have to be involved.”I see Austin’s eyes narrow. “Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t seriously be that petty to attack these children because of your eg
