Before he can even get off the table, I’m throwing myself in front of Brax. “No,” He shouts. But he’s too late, Kai’s hands grab my shoulders, his fangs embedded in my throat. I expect him to rip it out in his anger, but his eyes grow comically wide. They flash back and forth between an ocean storm and blood red, the wolf fighting the vampire inside of him. I send my healing magic up into him, caressing his wolf and reassuring him that everything is okay.Brax is right, if anyone can save him it should be me. Right? He pulls back gently after a few deep pulls, licking the wound clean. “Why did you jump in front of me?”Before I can answer, I’m ripped from his arms. Brax’s hands dance over my body, looking for wounds that aren’t there. He seems on the verge of shaking me, but Kai’s arm darts out, snagging my waist and sandwiching me between the two of them. He growls softly, barring his teeth at Brax. But his eyes never leave me.They’re both watching me, as if waiting for me to collap

I almost miss the halls changing from the industrial, cell block style into the abandoned house, with peeling wallpaper and squishy carpet, while looking for any sign of outside. But, Brax stops abruptly in front of the reinforced door that separated the two, opening the door the barest bit to look through.“We’re close,” He whispers, his eyes darting in every direction. “This is our last main hall, a quick turn left and we will be at the staircase that leads us to the front door.”He smiles over his shoulder at me, “I’ll get you the real earth in no time, little flower.”My laugh sounds a little maniacal, even to my own ears, but Kai’s step away only makes it worse. Brax’s eyes never leave mine though, and I find a comfort in his sanity. “I’m going to rip this place apart the minute I feel it.”“Let’s focus on getting out first, yeah?” Kai says, his eyes watching my every movement with concern. “And finding help, remember you don’t want to condemn everyone here to an early grave.”My

My magic retracts from him slowly, releasing his wolf to the safety of his relaxed soul.He leans down, eyes closed in pain as he rests his forehead on mine. “I’m so sorry. It’s like a burning need inside of me. You were in trouble and it’s like a switch flipped.”I can feel his heart racing, shaking his body. “Never apologize for what someone else did to you. You didn’t hurt me, and you never would.”His breath comes in shallow gasps as his eyes open and hold mine. “This terrifies me, Lena.”“I know,” I say, voice cracking as I watch him break. “But I’m here, and Brax is here, and they can’t take you from us.”Brax has stayed silent through most of this, watching warily. A sentinel in case he’s needed, but I would never make him choose. He walks over, settling his hand on Kai’s shoulder.“Please,” Kai whispers, “Don’t leave me.”“Never,” I promise. “We’re all going to get out of here. Together.”“We need to run,” Brax barks, glancing over his shoulder to the corridor we came from. Fa

Lena wiggles in my lap again and it takes everything in me not to groan. I can taste blood in my mouth from where my fangs have sliced through my bottom lip, but I can’t bring myself to care when she’s willingly this close to me. Maybe I should be worried about this new beast inside of me, but with Lena by my side, I feel like I can overcome anything.Mates aren’t supposed to be real. They’re supposed to be fables, or the dreams of romantics, but this tug in my chest that leads straight to her tells me there’s nothing fake about it. Of course I’m worried that this is all going to fall out from under me and I’m going to end up alone or dead, but right now all I need is here.My hands grip her hips, probably hard enough to leave bruises, but she doesn’t seem to mind. If anything, she wiggles just a bit more. She squeals as I pick her up, turning her to sit sideways on my lap. Hopefully this mitigates some of her movements, but I doubt it.“Where are we going, anyway?” She asks, resting

Kai squeaks as the forest comes to life. Vines slither and dance along the forest floor, creeping steadily closer as they weave together to form sturdy walls. Nothing gaudy, and nothing huge, just big enough to comfortably sleep the three of us safely for the night. They form as if they’ve always been there, just one with the surrounding forest as they climb over the car, hiding it from sight.“How did you do that?” Kai asks, a touch of surprise in his voice as he looks around the now densely forested clearing.I shrug, looking around to try and see it from his point of view. I guess it would be surreal to see a forest completely shift to aid random people within it, but it would be normal if I was back home. But I’m not home, and I need to remember that.“My magic is with the earth. I merely asked the forest to help shelter and hide us. To keep us safe. And it agreed,” I turn to look at him, his wide eyes watching my every move.“Holy shit, my mate is a badass,” he whispers, probably
