Sadie called at eight forty-five on Friday morning with the specific cadence she used when things were moving faster than projected.I was at my bench. The garage was running at its ordinary register — the radio low, Rafe doing something methodical at the truck bay, Mouse in the back with his laptop. The day smelled like coffee and WD-40 and the particular salt quality the air got when the wind came off the water.I stepped outside to take the call."The federal investigators made contact with Darren's legal team at eight this morning," she said. "Not a courtesy call. A formal notification that the investigation has expanded and that cooperation with the existing evidence package would be viewed favourably.""That was fast," I said."The article accelerated a timeline that was already moving. Your documentation gave them everything they needed to widen the scope formally. What's happening now is the system responding to critical mass." A pause, and in that pause I could hear her makin

She came herself.I hadn't expected that. I had expected another emissary — Pryce, or someone like Pryce, professional and distant, the managed approach of someone who understood that direct contact was a liability. Vanessa Stone-Blackwell operated through layers by design and by habit, and the layers had held for a long time. The layers had stopped holding. She arrived on a Tuesday morning in a car that was appropriate to the situation — not ostentatious, not the kind of vehicle you sent before yourself to announce your wealth. A dark sedan, driven. A woman who had reached the point where the management of appearances was less important than the management of outcomes.I saw her crossing the lot and I did not move. She was smaller than photographs. This was always the case with people who occupied a significant amount of psychic space — the actual physical person was inevitably less than the architecture you had built around them. She was perhaps forty, well-maintained in the way tha

Jax went to them.He told me the night before, simply and without ceremony, in the way he told me things that mattered: "Tomorrow morning I'm meeting with the Saints. I'll be back by noon."I had been in the middle of making dinner — the ordinary domesticity of it, a pan on the cabin's small stove, the window above the sink open to the salt evening air. I registered the statement and what it meant with the particular steadiness I had been developing over the preceding weeks, the steadiness of a person who has made a choice about who they are going to be in a situation that requires either panic or trust, and has chosen trust."You're going to their territory," I said."Yes.""Alone.""Ghost will be twenty minutes behind me on a separate road. Not visible. Just available."I thought about this. About the patch nailed to the garage door. The storage unit fire. The specific kind of organisation that did those things, and what it meant to walk into their space with nothing but whatever Ja

I testified on a Wednesday. The federal building in the regional city was the kind of architecture that wanted to communicate permanence and authority and succeeded primarily in communicating that it had been built in an era when both of those things required a lot of beige marble. I had been in buildings like this before — client meetings, permit processes, the occasional event at a municipal venue. They had never felt particularly significant. This one did.Sadie was with me. She had been with me since seven that morning, going through the session plan with the systematic thoroughness that I had come to rely on — not reassurance, which she didn't traffic in, but preparation, which she offered in abundance and which was worth considerably more."You're going to be asked to walk through the documentation in chronological order," she said, in the lobby. "You'll be asked about your knowledge of the transactions at the time. You'll be asked about the discovery process — how you found the

He named it after Cole. This was not a decision he arrived at gradually or debated extensively. It had been the answer to the question of what to do with the Wolfe inheritance from the moment he had understood, on a highway shoulder holding his mother's file, that the inheritance was going to be his to hold. The Cole Wolfe Foundation. Road safety. Automotive apprenticeships for young people who needed them. Funding for the kind of small, functional garages that existed in places like Cliff's End — not the corporate service chains, but the independent operations where a mechanic with skill and patience could build something real.He told me about it on a Thursday evening, sitting at the cabin table with the incorporation documents from Birch's firm spread between us.I read through them carefully. The foundation structure was solid — Sadie had reviewed it, Mouse had checked the regulatory filings, and a nonprofit attorney Jax had retained independently had drafted the governance docume

Marge found me at the bench on a Friday morning and set a mug of tea beside me and sat on the stool at the end of the bench and crossed her arms in the way she did when she was going to say something she had been organising for a while.I kept working. Experience had taught me that the correct response to Marge preparing to say something was to give her space to arrive at it in her own time and not to pre-empt or redirect. She was quiet for a moment. Then: "When I was forty-three and I had nothing," she said, "I thought the best I could hope for was to stop losing ground. I thought the building of things was behind me."I set down the socket I had been using."I was wrong," she said. Simply. As though this were not particularly significant.I looked at her."The garage is the best thing I've ever done," she said. "Not what I did before it. Not the business I built in my thirties, which was good but which I built from a script I'd been given rather than one I wrote. This." She looked a

He asked me on a Thursday. Not a formal asking — Jax didn't do formal asking, in the same way he didn't do announcements or declarations or any of the rhetorical apparatus that most people used to frame significant moments. He just said, at the end of the working day while we were both cleaning up at the basin near the back of the garage: "Tomorrow night. Ride. Just you and me."I looked at him."How far?" I asked."Far enough," he said.I recognised this as the complete available information and accepted it.We left at six on Friday, while the sun was still half an hour above the horizon, the two of us pulling out of the lot in a loose formation — him on his bike, me on my father's. The crew were all still in the garage when we left. Nobody said anything, but Rafe raised a hand from the doorway in the specific gesture of someone who is trying very hard not to look pleased with himself. The road south of Cliff's End was familiar to me now in a different way than it had been in the fir

He called on a Tuesday at eleven in the morning. Not Darren's personal line — his attorney's line, which had been routed through Sadie to reach me. This was proper protocol and the fact that it was being observed told me something about the state of things on Darren's side of the situation.Sadie was on the line with me. We had set up the call together, in Sadie's office, with a recording running and a notepad between us.Darren's attorney said good morning. Said his client had something he wished to express directly, with the understanding that it was being communicated through appropriate legal channels and that nothing in the communication constituted an admission beyond what had already been provided to the federal investigators.Sadie said understood. Then Darren himself came on the line.He sounded different. That was the first thing — the quality of his voice was not the managed, projected thing I had known. That voice had been a performance instrument, always slightly amplifie

Mouse found him on a Wednesday.I say found with the understanding that Mouse's version of finding someone is several orders of magnitude more thorough than the ordinary meaning of the word. He found him the way a surgeon finds a specific nerve — precisely, with complete knowledge of the surrounding tissue and the careful attention required not to cause additional damage in the approach.Pryce had made a mistake. It was a small mistake — the kind that accumulates in people who have been operating carefully for a long time and have begun to mistake competence for invulnerability. He had used the same digital payment method for two separate contracted jobs, one of which had already surfaced in the federal evidence package through a different thread, and Mouse — who had been running pattern analysis on financial records for weeks — had found the match. He brought it to me on a Wednesday morning with his laptop and the flat certainty of someone who has verified a thing thoroughly enough t

It came on a Thursday morning without warning.I had been at my bench for two hours, finishing the last section of the Indian rebuild — the wiring harness, which was the detail work, the part that required complete attention because the consequence of a mistake was invisible until it wasn't, until you kicked the engine over and discovered that what appeared to be a finished job was in fact an unfinished one with better aesthetics.I had been thinking about the apprenticeship curriculum. Not deliberately. Not with a legal pad and a structured approach. The way ideas arrive when your hands are doing something absorbing and your mind is doing something parallel that you don't notice until it's already underway. I had been thinking about the specific skills that the events business had required — not just the logistical competence of running events, but the communication skills, the client management, the reading of a room and the ability to adjust in real time to what a situation actuall
