TAYLOR“Taylor, thank goodness I found you.” “Ermm... Vaness? What are you doing?” I asked, my voice dropping with fear. I didn't need to turn around to feel River’s gaze burning into my back. “I went back to the theatre, and you were nowhere to be found. No one knew where you were, and I was so worried, so I came to check.” “I came home,” I said slowly, turning to see River staring at us. “I sent a message to the group.” “I know, but I tried to call you, and you weren’t picking up.” She had no real reason for showing up here. I knew that I had been leading her on, and that was entirely on me, so I had to shut this down now. I wanted to try and use her to forget River, but none of it worked. Even when I tried to move closer to her, it felt wrong, so I stopped before she could get the wrong idea, but before even taking up an offer with her, I was already offering the wrong idea to her. “Vanessa, you can’t just show up like this,” I said, pulling away from her and keeping her at a

RIVER“Shush!” I hushed Taylor as I picked up my phone, which was ringing. I sat in bed, and he held onto my waist as if he was afraid that I'd let go. “River?” “Hi, Lana.” My heart was in my mouth. This was more nerve-wracking than lying to my friends. It's been two weeks, and all I have done during this time is cook up lies on reasons why I couldn't spend the weekend with them, and while they always understood, I knew that they were catching up soon. “We want to try a new black-tie restaurant in town, and we were wondering if you’d like to come,” she said. “Oh…erm…I…I” “I know it’s last-minute, but Elise and Hendrix secured it, and we all thought it would be fun to go together.” “Together? What does that mean?” I asked, nervousness creeping on my insides. “We were hoping you’d ask Taylor…” “Taylor?” I shrieked, alerting him. Our eyes met, and he wiggled his eyebrow, almost making me laugh as he pressed his lips into the side of my arm. “Yeah, Taylor, your roommate. We thou

RIVER My father and Aunt G were supposed to come in tomorrow night, which meant that this was the last night I would spend with Taylor before I had to face my father and his judgement. I was not sure if I could do it, but Taylor had been reassuring me. I should feel better hearing him tell me how much I got this, but the pressure was getting worse. I wanted to snap. My back tensed as soon as my phone began ringing. I already knew who it was without having to check. My father had been doing these intense check-ins lately, as if he knew something was wrong and was trying to pin it down. I could almost predict when he would call. “It’s my dad,” I murmured gently. “Are you going to get it?” Tyalor nudged my side gently. “Honestly, I don’t think I want to,” my voice came out in a whisper as I looked to him. “He’s going to worry.” “I will miss it just this once,” I said, swallowing. “Just this once.” “Come on, don’t be scared.” “Why not?” He is constantly calling to check in too f

RIVERThanksgiving had always been my favourite time of the year until this year, when it turned into the most terrifying moment I had ever experienced. Keeping a secret from my father while Aunt G sat there with a smirk on her face, waiting to see how this was going to unfold, was my undoing. I had spent the entire day sorting dinner out while my father was out visiting a few friends he had never mentioned. “Your father is out now, which means that Taylor can come and say hello to me.” “Not a chance,” I shot down her idea without a second thought. She stared at me like I was the one who was not letting her live out her fantasy to the fullest. “Dad could walk in here any moment from now. “I can’t risk it.” I shook my head as I stirred the gravy over the stovetop. “Oh goodness, River! You have to live a little.” “I can’t risk anything going wrong with the dinner,” I sighed as I dropped the spoon, turning to her. “If all goes well with Dad tonight, then assuredly you’d be meeting

RIVERI pressed my face into Taylor’s leather jacket as his hands wrapped around me. “I missed you so much,” I murmured into his chest, not wanting to let go. This was more comforting than being stuck with my father, who expected so much from me. “Same here, sweetheart.” His hand pulled my hair away from my face as he gently caressed it, staring at me. He kissed me gently and pulled away before I could savour the moment. “River?” I froze at the sound of my name and the voice calling out to me. Our path was suddenly flooded with light from a flashlight. I was sure that my father was asleep before I sneaked out. He was even snoring, and I was careful. I gripped the sides of Taylor’s jacket, and he looked down at me. We were both frozen in place, but then a smile climbed his face. He didn't need to say a word for me to know what he was planning. “No, Taylor, if we make a run for it now, we can save it,” I said through gritted teeth, not trying to get myself exposed. Right now, he
