TAYLOR

“Taylor, thank goodness I found you.”

“Ermm... Vaness? What are you doing?” I asked, my voice dropping with fear. I didn't need to turn around to feel River’s gaze burning into my back.

“I went back to the theatre, and you were nowhere to be found. No one knew where you were, and I was so worried, so I came to check.”

“I came home,” I said slowly, turning to see River staring at us. “I sent a message to the group.”

“I know, but I tried to call you, and you weren’t picking up.” She had no real reason for showing up here.

I knew that I had been leading her on, and that was entirely on me, so I had to shut this down now. I wanted to try and use her to forget River, but none of it worked. Even when I tried to move closer to her, it felt wrong, so I stopped before she could get the wrong idea, but before even taking up an offer with her, I was already offering the wrong idea to her.

“Vanessa, you can’t just show up like this,” I said, pulling away from her and keeping her at a

RIVER“You know stabbing the dough like that isn’t going to make it any better.” I raise a glare to Taylor, who is standing beside me, an apron lazily tied around his shirtless waist and a stupid smirk. I shouldn't be worried about it, except that it was worrying me even more. “I know,” I said, pounding into the dough aggressively. “You are nervous.” He pulled my hand and turned me to him. His eyes peered into mine, searching as if that was going to let him find anything. I shook my head and avoided his gaze. “I am not nervous.” “You are,” he repeated. “And so what if I am?” I snapped and then realised what I had done. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “I am sorry Tay…” “It’s okay.” His hands slipped up and held my upper arm. “I’ll gladly take all your outbursts if it means I get to see you smile with your father.” “Ughh! Why am I so nervous? Why did I suggest cooking an entire Thanksgiving dinner for three people?” I asked with another sigh. “I mean, if you want, I c

RIVER“Shush!” I hushed Taylor as I picked up my phone, which was ringing. I sat in bed, and he held onto my waist as if he was afraid that I'd let go. “River?” “Hi, Lana.” My heart was in my mouth. This was more nerve-wracking than lying to my friends. It's been two weeks, and all I have done during this time is cook up lies on reasons why I couldn't spend the weekend with them, and while they always understood, I knew that they were catching up soon. “We want to try a new black-tie restaurant in town, and we were wondering if you’d like to come,” she said. “Oh…erm…I…I” “I know it’s last-minute, but Elise and Hendrix secured it, and we all thought it would be fun to go together.” “Together? What does that mean?” I asked, nervousness creeping on my insides. “We were hoping you’d ask Taylor…” “Taylor?” I shrieked, alerting him. Our eyes met, and he wiggled his eyebrow, almost making me laugh as he pressed his lips into the side of my arm. “Yeah, Taylor, your roommate. We thou

RIVER. “...and that was when he…” ‘A date with me tonight’ I stared down at my phone for far too long for my friends to notice. Lana was telling us an exciting tale of how she met the hot guy she was going on a date with tonight; with how exciting her tale was, I couldn't help but drown out her words, my heart solely pounding with the possibility of our first date. “River? Are you listening to me?” “Yeah, it was an urgent text,” I said, slipping my phone into my bag before they asked me who it was from. They had commented all week on how I was different, and when they asked how far it was to Taylor's, I just told them that we were on talking terms now. We had decided to just be friends. That was a lie, but the moment I told them, my rules were going to shatter. I was only going to tell them when we both decided it was time to tell anyone at all. For now, it was our little secret. My phone buzzed again, and I knew pulling it out now was going to raise their suspicions, so I igno

TAYLOR. I shifted in bed, and my body touched River’s slightly. My eyes fluttered open as I watched her perched on my chest, sleeping soundly. I had dreamed of this, and now that it was happening, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to react. I didn't expect her to come into the theatre and demand to speak to me or even think of wanting to be with me, but here we were. My dreams are becoming a reality faster and scarier. I stared at her for a minute until she stirred gently and tried to turn away from me. It still felt surreal that we were a couple. My hand pressed against her back, turning her into me. After staying in bed for a moment more, I pulled out of bed and covered her up before going into the kitchen to get breakfast ready for her. I was halfway done with the pancake while heavy metal played in the background when I felt a hand creep up my waist and her hand press against my back. “Good morning.” Oh, how I loved hearing her speak. I tapped on her hand gently and turned to

  • My Roommate is a Boy    RULES OF DATING.

RIVERThe car ride was quiet, tense and not what I thought it was going to be. Things didn't feel different naturally, but I knew they were different. The moment we walked in through that door, we were no longer roommates but now boyfriend and girlfriend. The thought of it terrified me, but it still sent a chill down my spine. When we stepped in, I walked to the kitchen to chug down an entire bottle of water, and Taylor retreated to his room, too quietly. I was not sure what I was supposed to do: wait out here for him or go to my room? He came out a few moments later, changed out of his old clothes, but this time shirtless, his shirt hanging on one shoulder as if he knew he was supposed to be wearing it but couldn't be bothered to.My eyes followed him from his room to the kitchen, where he took off the rules I had made on my first night here. He stared at it and looked up at me. We had broken every one of those rules like it was meant to be broken. He had affected me in ways I nev
