ZORA The worried glint was back to her eyes.It was impossible, even she knew as much as that.I can't control my powers fully. I don't know if there's more to the silver threads and killings. It's the only thing I've ever done successfully with my powers. To destroy. Semya mentioned curing him, too. otherwise, he'd unleash fury, and I'd have to kill him.But how do I get my powers to heal? And most importantly, what price would I have to pay? “I know I'm pretty much useless having powers I can't even tap into well or control ”, I told her. “...but this is the only way to save myself and my family. And I don't know how to go about it."“Courtney and your kids, right?” She held my hands in hers.A pensive look formed on my face as I hastily withdrew my hands from hers. “H—how did you know? Who told you?” I inquired,A sigh escaped her lips like I was just being stupid in the moment. “Who wouldn't? Anyone with eyes could easily see the subtle resemblance between you and those kids

The irony

ZORA "Zora!!!"I groaned and turned on the bed. I needed more sleep. "Wake up, Zora! Are you okay?"I opened my eyes gradually to meet Marissa's panicked face peering at me. "What?" I asked groggily, desperate to go back to sleep. She slapped my arm, relief flooding her features."You're quite good at giving me a scare.""I was just sleeping!" I protested."Yet, you're bleeding. Were you having a nightmare? I made sure the lights were on.""Bleeding? Where?" I questioned, grabbing my bedside mirror. My nose was a mess."What kind of nightmare was it?""I summoned Semya?"She frowned, "Semya?""The very first sylunthys, but before that, I saw Grace. She looked scared, afraid, and kept saying something." I sat up."What did she say?"I shrugged, "I didn't hear her."She took out a handkerchief to clean my nose, where blood was trickling out from, "Either way, was Semya able to help?"I shook my head negatively, "I'll summon her again."Marissa gave me a warning look, "You can't. I t

No pressure

ZORA Well, she's an eternal thorn on my sides, bonus points to her.She pointed to the shelf behind me, "Is that what you're looking for?"I turned around. It was!The grimoire. I didn't bother asking what she did. it's better to focus on other things. The grimoire was heavy in my hands. The air also seemed different. My fingers trembled slightly as they hovered over it. It was one of the very few things my mother left for me."Well?" Grace snapped, "Are you going to stare at it all day?"I glared at her and returned my gaze to the book. The words were not written with ink, or maybe they were, I couldn’t tell, but there were faint engravings of silver around each letter. They shimmered,Like my powers, the threads."You're holding it wrong.""Huh?" I frowned at her.She glanced at the grimoire, then back at me, "You're holding it wrong," she repeated, irritation in her voice.I shot her a look sharp, "It's a book, Grace. Not a bloody sword.""Yet, you’re reading it like a child w

Healing

ZORA Grace was staring at me like I had no hope anymore. "Maybe we can focus more on learning? I'll try the meditation techniques you taught me to later, maybe my wolf will come back."She shrugged, "Not like we have any choice. Check the grimoire, maybe there's something in there that can help. Perhaps there are a few things you can focus on instead.""I didn't come with my g-"She cut me off."Pick it up and stop wasting time!" I followed her gaze. The grimoire was sitting pretty on a branch. I could have sworn I didn't bring it with me, so how the heck was it here?I picked it anyway and sat on the floor. When I opened and laid it across my lap, the silver-lined pages glowed faintly, like they had been waiting impatiently for me to come back. Every time I blinked, the letters seemed to shift, like.... was it trying to pass a message or?? Grace leaned against a tree, watching me with her arms crossed, chin tilted, the perfect picture of nonchalance."Can you quit admiring and f

Afterlife

ZORA "Here," Grace said suddenly. Before I could ask, she grabbed a jagged rock and dragged it across her own arm. Blue transparent fluid leaked out of the supposed wound. She stretched her hand to me, "Let's see if you can do well with basic healing."I flinched. "What the hell are you—""Practice," she said curtly, still holding out the bleeding arm. "Or are you too scared your real self will surface? That you're just an imposter and a failure?"My stomach twisted. The threads wiggled almost excitedly. Is it possible to kill a dead person?I shook my head, I didn't want to find out.Healing meant reversing that pull, pushing life back instead of sucking it. Could I even do that?I forced my focus onto the wound, fingers hovering over the wound slightly. Nothing happened. I clenched my jaw and pushed harder, weaving the threads into the pattern the grimoire showed.Slowly, agonizingly, the bleeding slowed. The skin knit together in tiny bits, silver light stitching her flesh unt

Last words

ZORA It's been days since I started practicing how to use my powers.I'm past the basic healing stage now and focusing on the main thing since Ryker has nothing to do with a wound. Marissa has been a huge help. Grace barely appears since I threatened her, and she always kept her distance away from me. I also don't know what Marissa did, but she can see Grace now, apparently. I walked into the living room, and the servants, as usual, ignored me.I froze at the entrance when I saw the scene unfolding in front of me.I've been so busy with my training that I forgot about my children. Yet, nothing prepared me for the scent in front of me.Ryker was on the floor, facing the ceiling and reading a book to Leah, who, by the way, was messing with Ryker's hair.Tyler, who usually acts mature than his age, had a drawing book on Ryker stomach, drawing!!Since when did all these happen??How in the world is he with my children? And he's not cold?I returned my gaze to him, he looks so differ

Don't lie

ZORA "She said, and I quote, ' Please heal my son instead, help me save him from himself, please.'His fists were clenched, and I continued either way."She made me promise. She didn't care about herself. Even if I had powers, then she was ready to die to make sure you're saved."His hands curled around my throat, holding me few feet in the air, his claw digging into my neck."Don't lie to me!!""You can read my mind, listen to my thoughts. Check yourself. Does it seem like I'm lying?"He threw me away, his lips curled up in a twisted smile. I winced in pain as I landed roughly. "You're learning well, meiga. You know just how to hit the spot and be brutal."I coughed, clawing at my throat. Even though he wasn't close to me, I could still feel his hands around my throat.I smiled bitterly, "I learned from the best after all,""Where's Agatha? She should be able to confirm my truth since she was always everywhere.""You didn’t like her, I sent her away," he said coldly and left the

Draw blood

ZORA Marissa came back in the evening, looking very tired. I don't know what I'd do without her.Once I break Ryker's curse, I'll definitely ask her to escape with me."Found anything?"She shook her head and plopped down on the bed, "Absolutely nothing."Grace scoffed, appearing from nowhere, "What were you expecting?"I glared at her, "don't you have someone else to bother?"She rolled her eyes, "If I did, I wouldn't be here.""No idea if maybe rogue wolves took his body?"She shook her head again, "I didn’t even see his decaying heart.""Do you think Ryker took the liberty to-"Both women scoffed, "Right," I nodded, "Ryker would never."Marissa stood up with a sigh, "I have to prepare for the first coming today. See you soon?""A guest?" I queried, and instead of replying, she bolted out of the door.I turned to Grace, "Do you know anything about that?""No.... I don't always know everything.""So you don't know about Ryker's father an-""And sister?" She completed, "Don't know

Enraged

ZORA Her eyes gleamed excitedly. "Accepted. I'm eager to see what's so special about you anyway that he put up a fight."I scoffed.Did she think that cheap trick would work on me?She was in a fighting stance immediately and then suddenly lunged at me before I was ready.I threw my weapon away and faced her head on.My threads were visible. So I attacked while she was few feet away. With the threads, I gave her a cut on her face and flawless arm.She was enraged! She let out a guttural scream and came at me.I had it well under control. I expected her outburst.I mean, who wouldn't be annoyed. "That's enough." Ryker's voice rang out. He was in front of me, shielding me from her. His large frame easily swallowed mine.I peeked at her from behind him, and gave her a taunting smile. That's for her underestimating me.Even Grace looked proud. "The maids will escort you to your room, Scarlett. Leave."She didn't dare disobey. She threw her sword and stomped off like a child throwin

One more day

SCARLETT It was a lazy afternoon today, and Ryker was engrossed in the palace matters, while Zora was…well, who the heck cared where she was, or what her defiant self was up to? Although she'd so far been making for a good show of entertainment through our regular 'chats'Her oval-shaped face and eyes that seem to change color clearly didn't give away her sharp tongue. I wonder how eye color works for her. The sound of my footsteps in the quiet hallways echoed into my ears until I heard a faint sound. My eyes brows deepened, hastening my steps to where the sound came from. The garden. Too curious to make out what the sound was about, I brushed past the flowers without casting a glance even though they were my 'thing' and fixed my gaze ahead instead. “Give it back Tyler, else I'd tell mom”“Try calling her from here if you can”The two kids seemed to be lost in their argument as they still didn't notice my presence a few feet away from them. A glimmer flickered in my eyes as I wa
