The silence between them was suffocating. Veronica stood rooted in the corridor, her back against the wall, and her breath coming in uneven bursts. Cassie stayed close, watching her carefully, afraid that the slightest wrong word might break her entirely. “Harlow?” Veronica whispered again, tasting the name like something bitter on her tongue. Her gaze dropped to the floor, unfocused, as if the world itself had tilted. “I don’t even know him. I’ve never even heard his name before today. And you’re telling me Rafael...” her throat closed, her voice trembling, “...that he might be in love with him?” Cassie’s heart clenched. She had never seen Veronica like this. She had always known her as strong, poised, a little guarded but always composed. But now, Veronica looked fragile, as though one harsh word could shatter her into pieces. “I’m sorry,” Cassie said softly. “I shouldn’t have told you so bluntly. But you asked me for the truth, and I couldn’t lie to you. Not about this.”
