Chapter 11 – Confrontation at the Gala

(Aloe’s POV) I froze the instant I saw Wakes Savage, moving through the crowd like he owned the room, his eyes locking on me the second he noticed I wasn’t at his side.My chest tightened, but I forced my shoulders back, keeping my posture calm. I couldn’t let him see me falter.Blake’s hand brushed mine, just lightly, and it was enough. Enough to ground me, and to remind me that I wasn’t alone, that I had someone in my corner, and I had a choice. I stepped closer to him, keeping my gaze forward, letting my spine and stance say what my lips couldn’t yet.People were starting to notice, cameras clicking everywhere as whispers spread, and a small crowd formed around us, sensing the tension.I could feel it prickling the back of my neck, the curiosity in their stares. They were waiting for a drama, and I was about to give them one, whether Wakes liked it or not.He reached us in two long strides, his eyes holding the clear anger and confusion. “Aloe… What's going on?Why did you leave

Chapter 12 – Private Retaliation

(Wakes’s POV)The second I got into the car, I slammed the door and barked at the driver. “Move. Now.”The engine roared to life, tires spinning against the pavement as we shot away from the gala. The city lights blurred past the window, but I didn’t see them. All I saw, all I could see, was her… the way she had walked past me, the way Blake had blocked me, the way the crowd had pressed against us like witnesses to my humiliation.Heron sat across from me, quiet. Too quiet. That silence made my blood boil. I spun toward him, my fists clenched.“Explain!” I growled. “Explain why the hell I wasn’t alerted when they left the apartment? I told you to have everything monitored, every door, every corner, and every f*cking move either of them made. You were supposed to tell me the second they stepped outside.”Heron raised a hand, calm as ever, but there was tension in his jaw. “I did. The moment I noticed, I..”“You did what?!” I slammed my palm against the console, the sound echoing in th

Chapter 13 – Strategic Counter

Blake’s POVThe ride back to the apartment was quiet at first, the hum of the tires over asphalt filling the silence between us. Aloe sat beside me, her fingers brushing against mine on the console, tentative, testing. I didn’t pull away; not yet. Not after everything that had happened.“You didn’t answer my question in the car,” she finally said, eyes on the passing streetlights. “Are we just… pretending for the cameras?”I glanced at her, catching the subtle edge in her voice. “No,” I said softly. “We’re just… showing the world what I see every day.” My words were quiet, but my meaning was deliberate. I wanted her to know that the stunt at the gala wasn’t just about humiliation, it was about her, about giving her back control. She gave me a small, half-laugh, half-sigh. “You’re too serious sometimes, Blake.”I smiled, brushing my thumb along the back of her hand. “Maybe. But when it comes to you… I’m always serious.”By the time we reached the apartment, my mind was already racing.

Chapter 14 – Escalation and Threats

(Wakes’s POV) I paced across the study, my shoes clicking like a countdown on the hardwood floor. Heron was at the desk, fingers flying over the keyboard as he ran simulations, mapped out entry points, and calculated the security radius around Blake’s estate.I could feel my own impatience gnawing at me, each second a reminder that Aloe was out of reach, unclaimed, and flaunting herself in the hands of my enemy.“They’ve doubled security,” Heron said, eyes not leaving the screen. “All cameras, patrols, sensors… we’d be blind to nothing. Every gate, every side entrance, every blind spot.. has been checked and reinforced.”I ran a hand through my hair, frustrated. “I don’t care what you’ve done, Heron. I want more.If they think they can hide behind walls, gates, and cameras, they’re dead wrong. Find me a way in, a single vulnerability, any opening at all.”Heron’s fingers paused for a heartbeat. “There isn’t one. They anticipated everything. Even temporary hacks trigger alerts immedia

Chapter 15 – Public Power Move

(Aloe’s POV)The beach had been everything I needed and nothing I wanted all at once. The sun had been dipping low, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange, and Blake had been there, fully present, completely untethered.I had laughed more in those few hours than I had in weeks, letting the warmth of normalcy seep into me, even if only temporarily. We were walking along the shoreline, shoes in hand, toes brushing the wet sand, water lapping around our ankles.Every time I looked at him, my chest fluttered in a way I hated to admit. He was easy to be around, smooth, protective, and so obliviously dangerous at the same time. He had this way of making me feel like I could forget everything.. the world, Wakes, my life back home. And yet I couldn’t.“Careful,” he once said, his voice low, near my ear, and I felt it vibrate against my skin. “The rocks ahead are slippery.”I had to bite the inside of my cheek to stop a smile from forming. “I can handle a few rocks, Blake. I’ve survived

Chapter 16 The hut

Blake’s POVThe rain thickened fast, each drop slapping against the roof of the car like a warning we couldn’t ignore. By the time Aloe and I scrambled back inside, my shirt clung to my skin, heavy and cold. She sat hunched in the passenger seat, arms wrapped around herself, teeth knocking together so hard I could hear it even over the downpour.I reached across, pulled my jacket from the backseat, and draped it over her shoulders. She tried to tug it close, but her hands were trembling too badly to grip the zipper.I helped her, sliding it up to her chin. Even then, her shivers didn’t ease.I leaned closer. “You alright?”She shook her head, lips pale. “It’s too cold, Blake. I can’t… I can’t feel my fingers.”The heater was useless… the car’s engine had died hours ago. The only light came from the weak glow of the dashboard, and even that seemed to fade in and out like it was about to quit on us.Sitting here through the night would only make her worse. My mind dragged back years, to

CHAPTER 17 Nowhere to be found

WAKES POVHeron’s call came in the middle of dinner, but I wasn’t surprised. “Sir, a car just left the estate,” he said as soon as I picked up. His voice was clipped, professional, but there was an edge in it that made my stomach twist.“It’s a black sedan… the model Blake drives. I have confirmed the plates on the monitor.”I froze, the fork in my hand clattering against the plate. “A car left? Now?” My mind started racing before he could answer. “Heron, get yourself here. Now. I don’t care what you’re doing, leave immediately.”The line went dead, and I barely waited before standing and pacing, the sound of my own footsteps echoing through the quiet mansion.Every instinct in me screamed that this wasn’t going to be simple. Blake and Aloe out on their own meant war waiting to happen.I was already imagining the worst… her shivering in the rain, him holding her close because she was cold, their laughter turning to panic if anyone came near. My fists clenched at the thought.Heron a

Chapter 18 Fire up

Aloe’s POV My eyelids drooped as exhaustion tugged at me, but every time I felt myself drifting toward sleep, the cold reminded me I couldn’t. Not yet. Not until I knew I was truly safe.Somehow, Blake had managed to get a few pieces of wood burning, the flames flickering in the small hut, throwing shadows against the rough, damp walls.I had no idea how he did it but I let myself be grateful, even if just for this small comfort.“Come closer,” he murmured. “Stay by the heat. You’ll freeze if you stay like that.”I shivered again and scooted closer, letting him wrap his arm around me. My head naturally rested against his chest, the rhythm of his heartbeat strange in its steadiness compared to the war outside. I could feel the tension in his muscles, the way he remained alert, yet he still made space for me to find a moment of warmth. The contrast between the storm we’d faced and this fragile sanctuary he’d created was dizzying, and for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt

Chapter 19 Flickering shadows

Blake’s POVThe fire sputtered, tiny tongues of flame reaching upward, casting flickering shadows across the hut’s rough wooden walls. I had piled on whatever dry wood I could find, but it was still barely enough to warm the space. Aloe’s shivers hadn’t completely stopped, and each time she moved, I felt the cold bite at my own skin through the thin fabric of my jacket.I shifted closer, letting her lean against me again, her head pressing into my chest. There was no room for embarrassment here, no time for pretenses. We were soaked, exhausted, and alone in a hut in the middle of a storm-soaked brush, and yet somehow, being this close felt… necessary.“Do you think it’ll last?” she murmured, her voice almost swallowed by the crackle of the fire. I glanced down at her, noticing how her lashes clung together with moisture, her lips pale but soft in the firelight.I offered her a small, reassuring smile, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead.“It will,” I said, though I wasn’t

Chapter 20 She's gone

Blake’s POVThe fire was almost gone. The few logs that had been crackling moments before now smoldered weakly, hissing as rain seeped through the hut’s leaky roof. Aloe was sitting close to it, shoulders hunched, trying to soak up what little warmth remained. Her shivering had slowed, but it hadn’t stopped. I could see the tension in her hands, fingers pale and trembling. Even in the dim light, her exhaustion was clear.I reached for my phone, hoping for some signal. A tiny bar blinked weakly, barely enough to make a call. My heart lifted slightly. If I could just get through, I could have my security come for us. I dialed my security head and rattled off every detail I could… the location, the hut, the surrounding brush, the slope down to the road but halfway through, the screen went black. Dead. No service. The storm had won.I cursed under my breath, glancing at Aloe. She leaned slightly against the wall, trying to curl up next to the fire, but the warmth was fading fast.“Blake,”
